Gay Soldier Booed at GOP YouTube Debate (ContributorNetwork)

"Senator Santorum," the moderator began, "this question has stirred up a whole lot of controversy online."

The next video that played had been uploaded to YouTube by Stephen Hill, an American soldier stationed in Iraq. "I had to lie about who I was," he said, "because I'm a gay soldier and I didn't want to lose my job." Only now, thanks to the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, could Hill say such a thing without being fired.

"Do you intend to circumvent the progress that's been made for gay and lesbian soldiers in the military?" he asked the Republican candidates.

Someone in the audience loudly booed this American soldier, and was echoed by another. The video can be seen on YouTube.

So what do Republicans cheer for?

First, Santorum, after he replied to Hill by saying "Any type of sexual activity has no place in the military." This might come as news to those of you who were born to United States servicemen and women; or perhaps, the fact that United States soldiers are having sex would come as news to Santorum. I'm personally glad that my parents did while my father was in the Air Force.

Second, the idea that gay soldiers who are allowed to marry and have families and go to the military ball together are getting a "special privilege" that straight soldiers don't have. Is there a new Armed Forces policy that I'm not aware of that keeps soldiers from marrying? Again, I'm glad that my parents were allowed to.

And third, the idea that the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell "tries to inject social policy" into the military. Because apparently, all this "sexual activity" going on will keep it from doing its job "to defend our country." One can assume, then, that Santorum will be divorcing his wife to not be distracted from doing his job as the United States' President. Either that, or he and Karen are asexuals.

They also cheer for people dying

As seen in an earlier debate. As soon as the moderator noted Texas Gov. Rick Perry had "executed 234 death row inmates, more than any other governor in modern times," the crowd burst into ecstatic applause.

It's not just inmates' deaths that Republican voters cheer on, though, but also the deaths of the uninsured. At the tea party debate, moderator Wolf Blitzer presented Ron Paul with a hypothetical situation involving an uninsured man who needed emergency health care. When Blitzer asked "Are you saying that society should just let him die," someone in the crowd shouted "Yeah."

"No," Paul began. But someone yelled "Yeah!" more loudly this time, cutting the congressman off. He finally got to make his point (which basically amounted to "let him beg people for help"), and was roundly applauded for it.

When you're turned down by your insurer, and you or your child are left to die, they'll probably applaud your death too.
