Row over village church puts Egypt on edge (Reuters)

MARINAB, Egypt (Reuters) ? Police line the dirt roads of this village in Egypt's deep south whose dispute over a Christian place of worship has spread nationwide and plunged the ruling army into its deepest crisis since Hosni Mubarak was ousted.

A Coptic Christian woman who called to a visiting reporter from a balcony in Marinab, a settlement of hundreds of Christians and thousands of Muslims, said the Muslim villagers had effectively imprisoned her.

Although there were no physical barriers to her home, police tried to stop visitors going in and the family stayed huddled fearfully inside.

"Our children haven't gone to school in 15 days! We are trapped!" the woman yelled, before her husband quieted her for fear of the neighbors.

The trouble began when Christians in the village in the summer started building a dome on a half-finished building used as a place of worship for decades.

Details of what happened next are hazy: the Copts say some Muslim residents tried to tear the new structure down, arguing it did not have proper licensing, but the Muslims say there was a fire which they tried to put out.

Tensions in the village quickly spread and this week boiled over onto the streets of Cairo, 700 km (440 miles) north of Aswan city, Marinab's nearest big town, leaving 25 dead as Coptic protesters clashed with military police.

Rows over places of worship have long been at the heart of complaints by Christians in Egypt, who make up 10 percent of the population. But a spate of such attacks since the uprising that deposed Mubarak in February has upset Copts who say the country's interim army rulers have ignored their grievances and failed to protect them.

The rise in attacks on churches this year has been particularly blamed on Salafists and other strict Muslims who have emerged after the toppling of Mubarak, who repressed Islamists.

"This is not the Islam we grew up with," a Christian villager named Morkos shouted at a visiting reporter as his brother tried to calm him down.

"We know Islam, we live among it, it never meant tearing down our churches," he said.

Politicians of all shades have met and criticized the violence, saying the army has lost the people's trust. The finance minister tendered his resignation in protest at the handling of the clashes, although it was rejected.

"We are all family. All these problems started because of the church. They (Muslims) seem to think we don't deserve it," said Ashraf Ayad Gerges, a Christian overlooking the site of the ruined building where red bricks were piled up.

Blackened wooden planks pierced through the rubble.

TUG-OF-WAR

Inside one Coptic home, Christians spoke in low voices about their grievances, telling each other to whisper lest "they" -- the police who were trying to listen in -- heard.

On the rooftop of the simple four-storey house, they displayed the empty bottles they said were being stored in case they needed to make petrol bombs for defense.

Muslim villagers say they don't understand their fears and add there have never been any attacks on Copts in the village.

The Marinab row seemed to follow a typical pattern, where conservative Islam may play a role but where the core issue is more about a traditional tug-of-war in poverty-ridden rural Egypt between families and tribes.

Each side gives a competing account of what happened in this case, but both admit that village elders had agreed to a compromise on the church building that the Christians were slow to follow.

Muslim villagers deny they have any objection to the presence of churches and are swift to point out two others in the village. But they say any new house of worship must be licensed. Christians say the building did have the right papers.

"The people of Marinab have nothing against building a church at all," Mohamed Moussa Sadeq, a village cleric, said, sitting around in a traditional rural home with dozens of village elders and religious leaders.

"We live with them, we love them. What happened in those clashes in Cairo is not from us. Don't use us to light your flames," he said.

The Muslim villagers' position was endorsed by Aswan province governor, Mostafa al-Sayed, who says there were procedural errors in the license for the building, a claim the church and its lawyer refute.

Sayed's position was proof of official bias for Christians, who wanted him sacked and protested for days before the clashes in Cairo erupted. The governor was not taking calls to comment.

Residents in the province say the government's passive attitude in the face of previous church attacks has sent a message that such violence is acceptable.

CHURCH LICENCES

"If the church is wrong, those upholding the law should be the ones holding it to account, not the people themselves attacking it," Father Daoud Halim El-Gad of the Archangel Mikhael's Coptic Cathedral said from the city of Aswan.

Church construction licenses in Egypt are more difficult to obtain than approval for mosques, rights groups say, a constant source of aggravation for Christians.

Rights groups and Christians have long called on the state to issue a law that would unify regulations.

But Christians say the government's promise in March, after one church was torched, that it would work to implement new rules had not materialized. After Sunday's clashes in Cairo, the government said a committee would speed up drafting of the law.

"There is a loud voice that prevents the issuing of any law. Whose voice that is, I don't know," Father Daoud said.

Muslims insist they only want dialogue to resolve the row. In a hastily gathered roundtable of Muslim elders in the village, one whispered to another villager: "We have to contain this. The country can't handle our small problems."

"I swear to you by the God almighty, there has never been strife in this town, tension perhaps, but we are humans and are bound to have differences," said elder, 73-year-old Hajj Ali.

Others told a different story.

"Every time a window is opened, they throw rocks at us. I can't leave the house, if I go out I'll be killed," one Copt said from his home, although he was later seen strolling outside and smoking a cigarette with a Muslim shopkeeper around the corner.

Ibrahim Al-Barsy, the coordinator of a group called the Arab tribe coalition in Aswan, tried to divert what he saw as an unwelcome spotlight that has now been shone on the area.

"In Aswan, we don't have problems we don't solve ourselves. This is the custom. This is what we learned from our forefathers. Our creed is compromise," he said.

"This is the government's fault with its paperwork. We have no problem in our hearts toward Christians," he added.

Authorities in the local province say the root of the problems goes far beyond them.

"Our people are simple and kind. It is going to take time and before we heal a wound, we have to clean it first. They deal with problems and not the reasons for them," said one official in the province who did not want to be named, referring to authorities in Cairo.

"The law to unify procedures for places of worship has to be issued. You think the governor has a problem with all the churches in the world coming here? It isn't us."

Nursing Schools Houston:Living in Houston Texas ? The Urban ...

In May of 2006, the Texas Educator Excellence Grant Program was enacted by a special legislative session in Texas. Governor Rick Perry and several legislators sponsored the bill, which allocates state funds to underwrite merit pay plans in Texas schools across the state. It is the largest incentive pay program in the nation.

The program essentially implements a long-standing business concept into the Texas schools, treating teachers as individual professionals rather than an educational team. Proponents of the program believe that mediocrity becomes the standard, when excellence and mediocrity are equally rewarded. The legislature allocated $100 million for teacher bonuses for this school year, and another $250 million for the next school year. The program targets Texas schools, which have a large population of low-income students but also have earned one of the two highest state performance ratings of exemplary or recognized. Classroom teacher bonuses are only for those who teach in core subject areas and are based on student standardized test scores.

The student can choose to send their own announcements or the parents can send them. These will announce to the world that schooling has finally been completed and will allow everyone to share in the celebrations. These can be purchased from many different retailers, who specialize in these type of cards. If you want to make them truly unique and don?t want to make it appear as standard as the others, it?s possible to purchase blank announcements. These are just as they sound. The specialty stationery can be ordered blank or completely personalized with unique wordings, verses or sayings. One may choose to have a picture of a nurse?s cap embedded onto the Caduceus, which is the medical symbol that shows two serpents wrapped around a winged rod.

Custom cards can also be a good way to keep all the same. The graduate can change the details on each to fit the specific event. Most of these can be customized to exactly what the graduate wants to appear more formal and professional than writing by hand.

Pinning ceremony invitations can be sent even if the graduate is graduating from a distant learning program. The day should be celebrated, even if there is no campus to celebrate at. A nice way to have this kind of party is to set the date soon after the graduate will receive their degree in the mail. The ?big moment? then at the party will come when they rips open the first-class mail to show their degree to all the guests. Of course, many will want to rip that envelope open as soon as they receive it and so, the degree.

What to do when your foster child starts asking about adoption...

...if you thought I had the answer, you thought wrong.

"Mamma, are you guys gonna 'dopt me?"

Uhhhh, help! Who in the world is prepared for a question like that?!!

Our chickadee has been asking that question a lot lately. We aren't even sure what made her start thinking about the topic of adoption. We've never even said the word to her. Usually we just assure her that she will not have to wait much longer to find out what home her "forever home" will be, whether that is a biological parent home, an adoptive home, or our home.

Can you imagine being seven years old and worrying about anything other than swim lessons and spelling tests? I can't.

Today, she said to me, "Zekey-dog is going to be the adopted brother of the baby."

I thought about it for a second. "Well kiddo, Zeke will just be the brother of the baby. When Zeke got adopted into our family, it was forever."

She looked at me knowingly, "But some kids that get adopted get sent back."

Ohhhhh, man. NOTHING is secure to this child. I don't think she can fathom forever.

The only way I've thought of to relate to her convoluted conception of adoption is to think about how I have a hard time accepting that I'm forever secure in Christ. It's something I want to accept as true whole-heartedly, but I can't help but doubt when I am confronted of the ugliness of my sin.

I'm still not sure if I've explained adoption and her situation well to Chickadee, but I pray the Spirit makes up for my tongue-tied fumbling...anyone have tips on talking to little ones about families, foster care or adoption?

Sound Real Estate Investing Advice | Real Estate In Las Vegas

Article by Sherry Gain Yadira Kellerman

Real estate prices are governed by a huge number of factors. Therefore, real estate investing advice is not like a sure shot prescription about how you should invest. Rather, it is a broad set of guidelines that will help form your own thumb-rules. The most important <a href=?real estate investing advice is that investment in real estate should never be confused with speculation. Here are a few aspects that you might want to consider before you put your money into real estate.Real estate investment is like any other investment. It is more like investing in Treasury Bonds or Mutual Funds. You get returns on it even when you continue to hold on to your investment. In real estate investing, the gain could be two-fold. If the property you hold is in a sought-after neighborhood, it would most likely fetch you a good rent. While you keep getting the rent, the prices could rise and give you the added return.A typical real estate investor has the financial muscle and staying power. Such an investor does not get carried away by small, short term gains and instead concentrates on the big picture. An annual return of 6 to 8 percent of the invested amount is considered decent. Anything above 10 percent is a big bonus. In the case of speculation, you enter when the price is low and exit at a higher price. The assumption is that prices will continue to rise, and that is not always the case. In fact, the last decade has seen a big slump of over 70 percent in many of the otherwise booming economies. The best bet in the case of speculation is being able to spot developing neighborhoods, especially residential, and to invest early. In addition to the real estate investment and speculation discussed above, there is an interesting alternative. The real estate investor buys property that is not in the best of conditions, does it up in line with the current trends and then sells it for a substantially higher price. The unique selling point in this case is that the new buyer does not have to spend time, effort and money in getting it done. In one sense, this is an investment because you will still command a good rent till you get a buyer. In the case of commercial real estate, the returns are naturally much higher. However, there are two points that need to be considered. Number one, the investment required is huge, depending of course on the size of the property and its location. The other important factor is that movement can be pretty slow. Do not expect businesses to relocate every other year. So, while the income in the form of rent is likely to be fairly high, the prospect of earning money through price appreciation can easily be years away.In a nutshell, the best real estate investing advice is to look around, study the marketplace, and weigh the two channels of earning money ? through rent and through price appreciation.

Health benefits of broccoli require the whole food, not supplements

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2011) ? New research has found that if you want some of the many health benefits associated with eating broccoli or other cruciferous vegetables, you need to eat the real thing -- a key phytochemical in these vegetables is poorly absorbed and of far less value if taken as a supplement.

The study, published by scientists in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, is one of the first of its type to determine whether some of the healthy compounds found in cruciferous vegetables can be just as easily obtained through supplements. The answer is no.

And not only do you need to eat the whole foods, you have to go easy on cooking them.

"The issue of whether important nutrients can be obtained through whole foods or with supplements is never simple," said Emily Ho, an OSU associate professor in the OSU School of Biological and Population Health Sciences, and principal investigator with the Linus Pauling Institute.

"Some vitamins and nutrients, like the folic acid often recommended for pregnant women, are actually better-absorbed as a supplement than through food," Ho said. "Adequate levels of nutrients like vitamin D are often difficult to obtain in most diets. But the particular compounds that we believe give broccoli and related vegetables their health value need to come from the complete food."

The reason, researchers concluded, is that a necessary enzyme called myrosinase is missing from most of the supplement forms of glucosinolates, a valuable phytochemical in cruciferous vegetables. Without this enzyme found in the whole food, the study found that the body actually absorbs five times less of one important compound and eight times less of another.

Intensive cooking does pretty much the same thing, Ho said. If broccoli is cooked until it's soft and mushy, its health value plummets. However, it can still be lightly cooked for two or three minutes, or steamed until it's still a little crunchy, and retain adequate levels of the necessary enzyme.

The new study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. It was supported by the National Institutes of Health.

Broccoli has been of particular interest to scientists because it contains the highest levels of certain glucosinolates, a class of phytochemicals that many believe may reduce the risk of prostate, breast, lung and colorectal cancer. When eaten as a raw or lightly-cooked food, enzymes in the broccoli help to break down the glucosinolates into two valuable compounds of intensive research interest -- sulforaphane and erucin.

Studies have indicated that sulforaphane, in particular, may help to detoxify carcinogens, and also activate tumor suppressor genes so they can perform their proper function.

Most supplements designed to provide these glucosinolates have the enzyme inactivated, so the sulforaphane is not released as efficiently. There are a few supplements available with active myrosinase, and whose function more closely resembles that of the whole food, but they are still being tested and not widely available, Ho said.

Small amounts of the myrosinase enzyme needed to break down glucosinolates are found in the human gut, but the new research showed they accomplish that task far less effectively than does whole food consumption.

Although broccoli has the highest levels of glucosinolates, they are also found in cauliflower, cabbage, kale and other cruciferous vegetables. The same cooking recommendations would apply to those foods to best retain their health benefits, Ho said.

Many people take a variety of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals as supplements, and many of them are efficacious in that form, researchers say. Higher and optimal levels of popular supplements such as vitamins C, E, and fish oil, for instance, can be difficult to obtain through diet alone. Some researchers believe that millions of people around the world have deficient levels of vitamin D, because they don't get enough in their diet or through sun exposure.

But for now, if people want the real health benefits of broccoli, there's a simple guideline.

Eat your vegetables.
