Looking for a group of literate, dedicated roleplayers!

I have a few ideas in mind for some roleplays I'd love to make, but I wanted to try and scrounge a group up before I posted anything. One of the biggest problems I've found since starting here is that most roleplays just fall apart. I aim to find a group of dedicated and literate individuals that can commit themselves to a roleplay.

For the simple fact that I am attempting to find a group before presenting an idea, I had a few to toss out there to garner some interest.

1. Walking Dead based Zombie Survival RP

This isn't supposed to follow Rick and CO. or mirror any of the environments, but The Walking Dead is unique in the way it follows the idea of an apocalypse. Instead of focusing on battle and the zombies themselves (or finding a cure or whatnot), this RP would aim to follow the lives of average citizens surviving in this new world. Due to the nature of this RP, constraints would have to be considered -- for instance, no military based characters, limited availability to firepower, scrounging for supplies, etc..

2. Dragon Age based RP

The Dragon Age universe is something particularly interesting, with unique views of magic and religion. I don't expect everyone to have played both games or either of the games (however, I would ask that you familiarize yourself with the DA universe via the wiki). Again, it wouldn't follow Grey Warden and Crew, but be based on the universe -- so the taint, the darkspawn, magic, the Fade, etc..

3. Mass Effect based RP

Similar to the ideas of the Dragon Age RP, following the universe, but not the characters.

4. Fall Out based RP

It would follow the base story line of Fall Out, including when the bombs went off, why, how individuals survived and all included races -- Ghouls, Supermutants, Humans -- and enemies -- mutated insects, Feral Ghouls, Supermutants, and various robots. It would utilize the SPECIAL statistics and PERKS to allow more in depth roleplaying for scavenging, combat, and interactions between characters and NPCs.

I'm also open to any other ideas.

Feel free to reply here or shoot me a message.

The Wacky Stuff We Drop on New Year?s Eve

There are actual food drops, too, that offer a visual bite of local delicacies. Atlanta, for instance, releases an 800-pound fiberglass-and-foam peach. Known for its multimillion-dollar melon industry, Vincennes, Ind., raises an 18-foot watermelon into the sky, which then opens to release 12 real Knox County watermelons.

Steve Jobs, Jobs, Jobs ? genius, visionary ... outsourcer

Photo Matt Yohe via Wikipedia

Steve Jobs

?It?s all about Jobs. Steve Jobs. Although he was brilliant, creative and a successful CEO, he had one flaw: He outsourced Apple.?

So writes Joel D. Joseph, chairman of the Made in the USA Foundation, a Los Angeles-based group that promotes U.S. products here and abroad. Here?s the rest of Joseph?s provocative essay about Jobs, the brilliant technology pioneer who died in October, and Apple Inc.?

?Mr. Jobs could have created a hundred thousand jobs in the United States, but instead he created them in China and Korea. Apple can still move many of those jobs back to the United States.

Outsourcing

Foxconn is one of the primary subcontractors for Apple. It is the world?s largest maker of electronic products, including the iPhone, iPod and iPad. Foxconn employs from 300,000 to 450,000 workers in Shenzhen, China at the Longhua Science & Technology Park, a cramped, walled campus sometimes known as ?Foxconn City? or ?iPod City.? Covering more than one square mile, its enclave includes 15 factories, worker dormitories and a shopping area complete with a grocery store, bank, restaurants, bookstore, and a hospital. Workers never have to leave the campus, and rarely do.

Apple?s iPods are made by mainly female workers who earn as little as $40 per month, according to a report in Britain?s Daily Mail. The report claims Foxconn?s workers live in dormitories that house 100 people, and that visitors from the outside world are not permitted. Workers toil for 15 hours a day to make the iPod music player, the report claims. They earn $40 per month. The report revealed that the iPod Nano is made in a five-story factory that is secured by police officers.

Rights group says Hamas targeting Fatah members (AP)

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip ? An independent Palestinian rights group said Thursday that Hamas authorities in Gaza are targeting members of the rival Fatah, questioning them and searching their homes.

One Fatah activist quoted in the report from the Palestinian Center for Human Rights said he was held for 15 days, during which Hamas officers placed a plastic bag over his head during interrogation and subjected him to loud noises.

On Monday and Tuesday alone, the report said, Hamas summoned some 50 former members of Fatah security forces, questioning them at length.

Hamas and Fatah joined in a short-lived unity government following 2006 parliamentary elections. But the following year, the alliance shattered and Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip during several days of fighting, leaving the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in charge in the West Bank. Repeated attempts at reconciliation failed, and both sides have cracked down on the other in their respective territories.

The rights center said it condemns "political arrests and accompanying methods of torture and calls for immediate release of all political prisoners detained by Palestinian security services in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip."

Reconciliation talks currently under way with Egyptian mediation appear to be making progress, with both Fatah and Hamas saying they hope to allow Palestinian elections to go ahead in 2012.

In a response to the report, Hamas said, "Such claims aim to poison the atmosphere of reconciliation by raising false accusations. We do not have any political prisoners in Gaza."

Hamas also said that its activists are still being held by Fatah forces in the West Bank.

Fatah activists in Gaza were hoping to celebrate their movement's anniversary next week, but Hamas has so far banned the celebrations in the coastal strip. Fatah has banned similar Hamas rallies in the West Bank.

Report: Energy giant's shell firm cancels 800 Mich. leases

Using a shell company, the nation's second-largest natural gas driller, Chesapeake Energy, terminated leases with more than 800 Michigan land owners and is being sued for allegedly not paying bonuses averaging $95,000, according to an investigation by Reuters.

Oklahoma-based Chesapeake created a paper-only company, Northern Michigan Exploration, "so that one of America's largest energy companies could conceal its role in the leasing spree," Reuters writes.

Chesapeake says it has done nothing wrong.

Shell companies aren't illegal, Reuters points out. One legal expert called them "business as usual." The Chesapeake/Northern Michigan operation "exemplifies how U.S. corporations routinely can conceal financial and corporate transactions through the use of shell companies " and "serves as an intriguing test case of the use of shell companies," Reuters concludes.

The Michigan land owners, many of them elderly farmers, signed drilling leases with brokers working for Northern Michigan Exploration who "were under strict orders not to divulge Chesapeake's role," Reuters writes. Records show Chesapeake's CEO, Aubrey McClendon, is also the CEO of the Michigan shell.

At least 115 land owners whose leases were ended by Northern have sued for fraud, Reuters says. Chesapeake's defense is that Northern signed the leases, not Chesapeake.

Chesapeake says it acted properly. It says some land owners were paid bonuses. It also disputes "canceling" any Michigan contracts; rather, some contracts were "rejected" because property titles didn't pass muster, its corporate counsel says.

In written responses, Chesapeake says it sometimes uses shell companies to "keep a low profile" and avoid tipping off competitors and "speculators" about its land-leasing and drilling efforts. Such tactics are common in real estate, scholars say.

But now, Chesapeake also is using shells as a legal defense to shield itself against land-owner lawsuits. The energy giant has said in court that it was Northern Michigan Exploration, not Chesapeake, that canceled the leases.

If land owners prove that they should have been paid, at issue is who will be held accountable: Chesapeake, a corporation with $37 billion in assets, or Northern, a shell company with no publicly documented assets.

New at The Nation: Second look at the Soviet Union?

posted at 8:35 pm on December 28, 2011 by Allahpundit

If they wanted to take a dump on Vaclav Havel?s grave, it would have been cheaper just to fly to Prague and do it.

The occasion here is the 20th anniversary of the break-up of the Evil Empire, but I like to think of it as a parting gift to Kim Jong-il. Where are you when we need you most, ruthless-Stalinist-counterweights-to-U.S.-power? Over to you, Mikhail Gorbachev:

This event led to euphoria and a ?winner?s complex? among the American political elite. The United States could not resist the temptation to announce its ?victory? in the cold war. The ?sole remaining superpower? staked a claim to monopoly leadership in world affairs. That, and the equating of the breakup of the Soviet Union with the end of the cold war, which in reality had ended two years before, has had far-reaching consequences. Therein are the roots of many mistakes that have brought the world to its current troubled state?

Within such a matrix, the United Nations and its Security Council become expendable or at best an impediment, while international law is viewed as a burdensome legacy of the past. That was the attitude taken by the United States and its supporters in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s and in Iraq in 2003. American pundits started talking about the United States as more than just a superpower, calling it a ?hyperpower? capable of creating ?a new kind of empire.??

In short, the world without the Soviet Union has not become safer, more just or more stable. Instead of a new world order?that is, enough global governance to prevent international affairs from becoming dangerously unpredictable?we have had global turmoil, a world drifting in uncharted waters. The global economic crisis that broke out in 2008 made that abundantly clear.

The West must undertake a critical reassessment of all that preceded this painful crisis. It is more than just a crisis of global finance or even a crisis of an economic model based on a race for hyperprofits and excessive consumption that grinds down the earth?s resources and ruins nature. The crisis grew out of the arrogant conviction of ?the collective West? that it had the recipes to solve all problems and that there was no alternative to the ?Washington Consensus,? which claimed to work equally well for all countries.

The Soviet Union: Guarantor not only of international stability but of western prosperity. It?s not clear to me how the world is less safe when one superpower is free to intervene in Yugoslavia or Iraq than it is when two superpowers are forever at risk of being dragged into nuclear war by conflicts between their client states, but the good news I guess is that in another decade or two we?ll be able to test the theory again with China. In the meantime, to even begin to take this argument seriously, you have to assume the rosiest possible scenario for the transformation of the USSR from expansionist communist menace pre-Gorbachev to the cuddly UN-hugging perestroika pixies that Gorby envisions in his Nation piece. How likely is it, really, that the Soviets would have reacted to the rising regional ambitions of China and India by settling into some sort of benign isolationist Eurosocialist senescence? He can?t even bring himself to tell the truth about the Soviet reaction to German unification or Balkan independence in this piece. Why should we believe him when he assure us this particular Harry Turtledove novel would have turned out awesome?

Ah well. We?ll just have to muddle though for a few more years until some other country with the means and inclination to turn America into a parking lot arrives to restore global ?balance.? I?ll leave you with this quote from one of the companion pieces to Gorbachev?s at The Nation, chronicling the troubles that have befallen Russians since the sudden sad demise of Stalinism: ?A majority of Russians, on the other hand, as they have repeatedly made clear in opinion surveys, still lament the end of the Soviet Union, not because they pine for ?Communism? but because they lost a familiar state and secure way of life.?

Not a fan of zombie RPs in general but it must be said that in a genre of endless rehashing, this story is a breath of fresh originality. Good luck with the RP. If it doesn't work write the thing up as a screenplay, the idea is infinitely better and more creative than any zombie movie I have seen ever.
