SafeSync for Business

Individuals and businesses alike face the problem of how to access files without physical access to the device that houses the data. A range of cloud-based services have stood up to solve this problem, some with better results than others. Trend Micro's SafeSync for Business (there's also a "for Home" edition) is one such problem-solver. It's well suited for businesses that intend to pay for at least 20GB of storage no matter what solution they use, although it doesn't offer any particularly compelling features or a sexy interface design, while its competition does.

The biggest name in the synchronization game is Dropbox (4 stars) (an Editors' Choice), an excellent and widely used service among individuals in particular. Dropbox comes to my mind when I think of the consumerization of IT. Many people love Dropbox for personal use, and, they're willing to use their personal account at the office to get work done in a pinch, either covertly or overtly. TrendMicro's SafeSync for Business is, as its name suggested, targeted squarely at the business market proper, rather than rogue employees. However, now that Dropbox has dropped more competition into the SMB ring with Dropbox for Teams (a business-end solution that leverages the system so many already know and love), TrendMicro will have to compete head to head with Dropbox for business customers, too.

Another one of our favorite file-syncing services, and also an Editors' Choice but with less name-brand recognition, is SugarSync (4.5 stars), which can't be beat for supporting every major and minor platform, from Symbian to Windows Mobile to Linux. SugarSync also wins consumers over by offering 5GB free (Dropbox gives away 2GB). But doubling SugarSync's free space with a whopping 10GB for any user is CX (4 stars), which doesn't support as many system as SugarSync but is nearly as good in every other way and sports an attractive web component.

Among all these excellent options, it's tough to find unique characteristics of SafeSync that truly set it apart. It checks all the basic boxes: syncing across devices, general sharing features, a dedicated folder for drag-and-drop file upload. SafeSync's Web interface looks drab compared to those of Dropbox, CX, and SugarSync. TrendMicro touts invisible advantages, though, like the fact that it owns its data center and thus can guarantee 99.9 percent service availability. Another benefit: SafeSync provides pretty tight controls over network processes, such as upload and download speeds.

Space, Prices, and Supported Systems
File-syncing companies have been slashing prices recently with all the fierce competition in the market, and TrendMicro is competitive in this area. SafeSync's one-year plans look affordable for a small business: 20GB for $23.95; 50GB for $53.95; and a whopping 100GB for $89.95. But a two-year contract offers even more savings: 20GB for $35.95; 50GB for $77.95; and 100GB for $119.95. Mind you, these are one-time payments, not recurring monthly or annual charges. For 100GB, Dropbox and CX both charge $19.99 per month, or $239.88 for the year. SugarSync's going rate for the same package is a one-time fee of $149.99. Syncplicity, another service we've tested, is the most expensive, doesn't even advertise a 100GB plan, but does have a one-year 50GB option for $15 per month.

Support for a variety of operating systems couldn't be more pertinent to a discussion of file syncing, as the whole point of the service is to give you access to your files anywhere. SafeSync hits the big four: Windows, Mac, iOS (3.0 and later), and Android (2.1 and later). It does not support BlackBerry or Windows Mobile, though. If you or your business rely on those platforms, or even Symbian (unlikely) or Linux (more likely), stick with SugarSync, which has apps for them all.

Palestinians block show by Israeli-Arab singer (AP)

JERUSALEM ? A popular Israeli-Arab singer had to cancel a show on New Year's Eve in the West Bank because of threats from Palestinian activists opposed to coexistence with Israel, the performer and police said.

It was the latest in a string of cancellations after threats and other pressure tactics by Palestinians groups promoting a boycott of virtually anything connected with Israel. The boycott movement says its tactics are a nonviolent way to protest Israeli policies. Israeli officials denounce the efforts as "delegitimization" of Israel's right to exist.

Sharif, who uses only one name, said he was expecting to perform before thousands of Palestinian fans at a New Year's Eve concert in Ramallah, the west Bank administrative capital, but he was told the day before that his concert was being canceled because of a threat to his life.

"I'm an artist and I want to sing before all audiences," said Sharif, a member of Israel's Arab Druse minority who sees himself as a bridge between the two sides. "I'm a man of peace, not politics. I just want to bring my music to my fans."

Palestinian activists campaigned against his concert because he has performed before Israeli soldiers.

Palestinian police said the decision to cancel the show was based purely on security concerns. They said once they became aware of the opposition, which was organized in a Facebook campaign, they ordered the concert canceled.

"When we see people bracing to bar a controversial party like this, we interfere to prevent any tension or violence," said Adnan Damari, a police spokesman.

Sharif said he separates his performances from politics, noting he has played in the West Bank and Gaza before and dreams of performing in Syria and Lebanon.

"I'm surprised that this was done against me ? I belong to both sides," said Sharif, 32, who performed earlier last year in the West Bank. "I've got to get back there and I hope it happens soon." The Druse sect is part of the larger Israeli-Arab minority.

It wasn't the only controversy in Ramallah on New Year's Eve.

Palestinian singer Basel Zayed was prevented from completing his concert after he performed a song that mocked the Palestinian leadership. Under pressure from Palestinian police, organizers shut down the event.

The New Year's incidents follow two other events in which Israeli-Palestinian dialogue meetings were thwarted because of Palestinian pressure. The activists behind the move oppose any "normalization" between Palestinians and Israelis as long as peace talks between the sides are deadlocked. Negotiators sat down in Jordan Tuesday for their first meeting in 15 months.

"The movement in Jerusalem will always demonstrate against any joint meeting as long as the peace process is stalling," said Hatem Abdel Qader, an adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Jerusalem affairs.

Palestinian government spokesman Ghassan Khatib said the meetings were local initiatives ? his government was not involved and did not oppose them. Even so, among the Palestinians who objected to the Israeli-Palestinian meeting were senior members of Abbas' Fatah movement.

Palestinian activists have long called for boycotts of Israel, hoping such pressure will achieve what years of negotiations and violent uprisings have not: end Israel's occupation of the West Bank and east Jerusalem and bring about creation of a Palestinian state.

In recent years, the Palestinians have scored several small victories, persuading some European pension funds to divest themselves of firms involved in West Bank settlement construction, for example. Several international artists, including Elvis Costello and the Pixies, have canceled performances in Israel to protest Israeli policies.

Another band, Boney M, was ordered by Palestinian concert organizers not to sing its hit "Rivers of Babylon," which quotes a biblical passage referring to the Jewish people's yearning to return to the biblical land of Israel.

Israel says the economic impact of the boycott campaign has been negligible and accused the activists of promoting hatred against the Jewish state.

Yossi Kuperwasser, the director general of Israel's Strategic Affairs Ministry, said "anything happening to promote peace," such as musical performances or academic conferences, "should be accepted by the Palestinians." Instead, he said the cancellation of such events reflects a campaign by the Palestinians to delegitimize Israel.

"They don't accept Israel as a Jewish state as a fact, let alone its right to exist," said Kuperwasser, whose office monitors what it says is incessant incitement against Israel in Palestinian society.

98% Pariah

There has been much reductive talk about how PARIAH is PRECIOUS 2011. While they both deal with a protagonist trying to break free of her stifling family situation, PARIAH is much more gentle in tone and tells the tale of a young, tomboy lesbian navigating her way through life. Adepero Oduye has such charm as Alike, a smart high school student who doesn't quite know what to do with herself yet. Kim Wayans, who has excelled in comedy in the past, is striking and vivid as her less-than-supportive mother, while Charles Parnell is charming and wonderful as her father. Pernell Walker plays a character you don't get to see often in film, the butch lesbian friend, while Aasha Davis has the impossible role of a friend who turns into a love interest, and then has a strange, out-of-left-field turn. She charms despite the odd transition. I found myself caring very much for this cast of characters, mainly because of the refreshingly articulate way they expressed themselves. It's a breath of fresh air to see a so-called "urban" (hate that term) drama where the people in it seem to care about music, books, and each other. If I had a complaint, it would be about the cinematography. Although there are beautiful images to be had here, the hand-held work felt annoying at times. Sometimes stillness, especially with a main character who lives so well in it, is the right way to go.That aside, this could be the sleeper hit of 2011. A film with a beating heart and soul.

Atlanta Falcons finish regular season with romp over Tampa Bay Buccaneers; will play at New York Giants 1 p.m. Sunday in first round of NFL playoffs

ATLANTA -- Michael Turner and the Falcons didn?t want to settle for just making the playoffs.

They wanted momentum and the best seed possible.

Hoping for a fast start, the Falcons set a team record with 42 first-half points, including two touchdown runs by Turner, and Atlanta cruised to a 45-24 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday to clinch the No. 5 seed.

Julio Jones caught two touchdown passes in a span of 26 seconds in the first quarter as the Falcons gave the Buccaneers their 10th straight loss.

?We didn?t want to come down to the wire, backing into the playoffs,? Turner said.

The Falcons were motivated by two blowout losses -- 48-21 to Green Bay in last year?s playoffs and 45-16 at New Orleans last week.

?Getting embarrassed like that last year, that?s not who we were,? Turner said. ?We just wanted another chance.?

The Falcons (10-6) and Detroit (10-6) are the NFC wild cards. Atlanta, which beat Detroit on Oct. 23, won the tiebreaker with the Lions for the more favorable seeding. The Falcons will play at the New York Giants in the first round of the playoffs.

?We wanted to play our final regular-season game with a lot of intensity and energy, and I think we did that in all three phases,? Falcons coach Mike Smith said.

Josh Freeman threw two interceptions and lost a fumble in the first half as the Buccaneers (4-12) closed their season with their 10th straight loss, leaving the status of coach Raheem Morris in doubt.

?If I was in the business of working out my future, I wouldn?t be coaching,? Morris said. ?I?m going to go to work tomorrow until they tell me to stop.?

The Falcons led 42-0 when they began resting some starters, including quarterback Matt Ryan and Turner, late in the first half.

?We had opportunities the week before and just didn?t make the plays,? Ryan said. ?Today, we made the plays and I think that?s what we needed moving forward.?

Ryan was 6 of 9 for 106 yards, including touchdown passes of 17 and 48 yards to Jones in the first quarter.

Tampa Bay, which finished 10-6 last season and started 4-2 this season, is left with its longest losing streak in one season in 34 years. The Buccaneers also lost 10 straight in 1977. They lost 11 straight between the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

?This is not the season we wanted or expected, but we will need to rededicate ourselves and get ready for this offseason,? Morris said.

Turnovers were a problem for the Buccaneers all season. Freeman began the day tied for the league lead with 19 interceptions before completing 31 of 45 passes for 274 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

With Atlanta leading 42-0, Freeman threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Dezmon Briscoe with about 2 minutes remaining in the first half. Freeman threw a 5-yard TD pass to Briscoe in the fourth quarter.

Tampa Bay?s other touchdown came on Elbert Mack?s 40-yard interception return against Falcons? backup Chris Redman in the third quarter.

Turner ran for 172 yards and two touchdowns, including an 81-yard scoring run late in the first half. The score capped the Falcons? run of six unanswered touchdowns.

The Falcons led 21-0 after the first quarter and then put the game away with three more touchdowns in the second quarter.

The strong showing was important for the Falcons. Last week?s loss at New Orleans was the worst in four seasons with Smith.

?The main thing we wanted to do was flush out of our system last week,? tight end Tony Gonzalez said.

The Falcons announced before the game Gonzalez, 35, has signed a one-year contract extension, ending speculation he might retire after this season.

The Falcons had the No. 1 seed in the playoffs last year before losing to the Packers.

Despite the team?s lower seed, Gonzalez said the Falcons are prepared for a longer postseason run.

?Honestly, I?ve said it all year: I think we?re a better team than we were last year,? Gonzalez said.

Rookie Jacquizz Rodgers scored on a 1-yard run for his first career touchdown to start the Falcons? scoring. Rodgers lost a fumble at the Tampa Bay 2 in the fourth quarter.

After Ryan?s first TD pass to Jones, Dominique Franks? interception on Tampa Bay?s first down gave the ball back to Atlanta.

On first down from the Buccaneers 48, Ryan again threw to Jones, who fought off safety Tanard Jackson for the catch. Jones then jumped up from the turf, hit cornerback E.J. Biggers with a stiff-arm and then dragged Biggers into the end zone.

Turner had two touchdown runs and Curtis Lofton returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Matt Bryant kicked a 20-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter after the Buccaneers were stopped on fourth down at their 10.

Notes: Ryan passed Jeff George for the Falcons? most yards passing in a season. George threw for 4,143 yards in 1995. Ryan has 4,177. ... Turner has 50 rushing touchdowns in four seasons with the Falcons, passing Gerald Riggs? team record of 48. ... WR Roddy White also celebrated a milestone, passing Terance Mathis for the most yards receiving with the Falcons. Mathis had 7,349 yards from 1994-2001. White finished the game with 7,374 for his career. ... By playing in his 225th game with Tampa Bay, CB Ronde Barber passed Derrick Brooks for the team record.

In Google search on sex, India and Pakistan are neck-in-neck

The word 'sex' is one of the most searched words across the internet. Google has revealed that it is in Pakistan that the term is most searched. Indian is second on the list.

'; } } } if (google_ads[0].bidtype == "CPC") { google_adnum = google_adnum + google_ads.length; } document.write(s); return; } google_ad_client = 'pub-9372192619832074'; google_ad_channel = '9759277419'; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '2'; google_ad_type = 'text'; google_image_size = '728x90'; google_feedback = 'on'; google_skip = google_adnum; // --> IF SOMEONE comes up to you and asks, which is the first three-letter word that comes to your mind? What would your answer be? Most often or not, it has to be ?sex?. Pakistan would be the first country to agree with it, as internet users in Pakistan have defeated all other countries in the most searched word ?sex? in 2011. Pakistan?s neighbour, India is not far behind, as they are second in the list of countries. As far as cities are concerned, eight Indian cities figure in the list of top ten cities for searching the same term. It is not often that countries like India and Pakistan are ranked 1 and 2 in any list around the world. Both, India and Pakistan would not be pleased with this dubious distinction, as it does not give a positive image to their respective countries too. The study clearly indicates that people in India and Pakistan are inclined in watching pornography. Hence, it would be a big surprise for India, especially, as the rape cases in the country are quite high. But how much do like these kinds of browsing influence people in committing such acts?

Google may have come up with this data mentioned above, but how would they able to justify that the person using the internet was an Indian or a Pakistani, as IP addresses have been used by Google trends to get the acquired information from the server logs, reports PTI. It may also happen that a tourist from some other country have come to India and may have Google searched it. There are more than 1 lakh tourists that primarily come to India each year.

As far as the accuracy of the Google analysis is concerned, Google trends say, ?The data Trends produces may contain inaccuracies for a number of reasons, including data-sampling issues and a variety of approximations that are used to compute results. We hope you find this service interesting and entertaining, but you probably wouldn't want to write your PhD dissertation based on the information provided by Trends," as reported PTI.

India has not topped the chart in the countries list, but there was a strong possibility for India, as it is one of the most populous countries in the world. If we look at the number of Internet users across the world, India stands 3rd in the list, with 100,000,000 people using Internet as per the figures published on June 30, 2011 (Source : Internet World Stats). Pakistan does not find any mention in the list of top 20 internet users.

ATLANTA (AP) ? Virginia couldn't put a postseason cap on its season of improvement.

Hurt by special teams breakdowns, Virginia didn't keep pace with high-scoring Auburn, losing 43-24 in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Saturday night.

The Cavaliers, who were 4-8 last season, doubled their wins this year, earning coach Mike London a two-year extension on Friday.

Virginia (8-5), wearing orange helmets for the first time since 1978, led 14-7 in the first half before Auburn charged back behind a balanced running game and big plays on special teams.

The Tigers blocked two punts, including one for a safety, and recovered an onside kick.

"That's one part of the game and it's my responsibility to make sure we play all facets of the game well," London said.

"We didn't execute like we needed to."

Auburn was without running back Mike Dyer, who was suspended for an undisclosed rules violation. Quarterback Clint Moseley left with an ankle injury early in the first quarter.

Virginia held out two top defensive players, cornerback Chase Minnifield and linebacker Steve Greer, with knee injuries. Greer was in uniform but didn't play.

London said he didn't want to risk more serious injuries Minnifield and Greer.

"On that surface when you have to cut and you have a knee injury, I'm not looking for heroes," London said.

"I don't want to risk further injury that would really cause a young man some harm."

Don Joseph started for Minnifield.

"It definitely hurt not having them, but at the same time we have a next man up situation," Joseph said.

Virginia receiver Kris Burd caught two touchdown passes before leaving with an injury in the fourth quarter. Burd had six catches for 103 yards. He said he hurt his collarbone.

London said the Cavaliers' outlook remains bright.

"I'm not frustrated," London said. "I'm not disappointed about who we have. We'll keep recruiting players and developing our players and keep expecting that we'll have opportunities to play in the postseason and play for championships."

Michael Rocco, a sophomore, completed 26 of 41 passes for 312 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

"It's very encouraging, not only just Michael but all the players that are coming back," London said.

Perry Jones had 11 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown and seven catches for 90 yards.

"We won't let this loss define how we work in the offseason," said Jones, a junior. "This will push us to do better next year."

Onterio McCalebb scored on a 3-yard run and 25-yard catch while starting for Dyer. McCalebb had 109 yards rushing. Tre Mason added 64 yards rushing, including a 22-yard scoring run.

Auburn (8-5) ran for 273 yards.

"I knew that we needed to run the ball well today as a team, and we knew we had to do that to get the win," McCalebb said.

The offensive outburst came in Auburn's last game with offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who has been hired as the Arkansas State coach.

Barrett Trotter started the first seven games before losing his job to Moseley. He made a triumphant return to prominence against Virginia, completing 11 of 18 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown.

Kiehl Frazier, a freshman, had 16 carries for 55 yards and two touchdowns while rotating with Trotter.

One year after winning the national championship ? and losing Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton ? Auburn absorbed lopsided losses to LSU, Georgia and Alabama in the second half of the regular season. After the loss to Alabama, defensive coordinator Ted Roof left for the same post at Central Florida.

While Malzahn stayed with Auburn for the bowl game, coach Gene Chizik took control of the defense.

While others speculated that the loss of Dyer, an All-SEC selection, could be devastating to Auburn, McCalebb was eager to show he could be more than a change-of-pace back.

McCalebb set up his touchdown run with a 60-yard run.

Burd's 27-yard catch from Michael Rocco midway through the first quarter gave Virginia, wearing orange helmets for the first time since 1978, a 7-0 lead.

Then Auburn's special teams made the first of two momentum-changing plays in the half.

Freshman receiver Garrett Harper blocked a punt by Virginia's Jimmy Howell to give the Tigers possession at the Cavaliers' 15. Following a 12-yard run by McCalebb, Frazier scored from the 3.

Back-to-back unnecessary roughness penalties against Auburn's defense helped set up Burd's second touchdown catch from 35 yards for a 14-7 lead.

On the first play of Auburn's next possession, McCalebb broke free for a 60-yard run to the Virginia 25. He capped the drive with a 3-yard scoring run.

Chizik then called for an onside try and Cody Parkey recovered his own kick. After Trotter's 50-yard pass to Emory Blake, Frazier scored from the 1.

Auburn's Angelo Blackson blocked Howell's punt through the end zone for a safety in the third quarter. Virginia's only second-half points came on a 1-yard touchdown by Kevin Parks in the third quarter.

Parkey kicked field goals of 45 and 37 yards.

Robert Randolph kicked a 24-yard field goal for Virginia.
