Magnifying glass, calipers, teeny tiny tape measure. These are the weapons with which researchers are fighting it out to find the world?s smallest frog.

One team just announced the discovery of the on-average 7.7 millimeter Paedophryne amanuensis, which can sit comfortably on a dime. It was discovered in the moist under-layer of New Guinea?s tropical rainforest. The research was published in the journal Public Library of Science One. [Eric N. Rittmeyer et al, Ecological Guild Evolution and the Discovery of the World's Smallest Vertebrate]

The little guy thus ousts another New Guinea frog, which had only claimed the title in December. The newest frog species is also being cited as the world?s smallest vertebrate, although it?s more correctly the smallest free-living vertebrate. A 6.2 millimeter male anglerfish spends its life buried in the body of its mate.?

Finding the little frog was no small achievement. Besides being tiny, the high-pitched mating calls researchers followed sound more insect than amphibian. [Frog calls.]

Tiny vertebrates reveal changes that make miniaturization possible. For instance, some of the digits on the frogs? feet have disappeared. And their skulls develop differently than those of larger critters.

So we celebrate the world?s smallest frog and free-living vertebrate. Until the next one is discovered.

Really, Greece? Pedophiles? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | OK, Greece, I read in a story by the Associated Press that you have recently decided to recognize kleptomaniacs, pyromaniacs and pedophiles as those deserving of disability payments. I can say that although I may understand your logic in deciding this, I must say that your logic fails to recognize one of its major flaws -- that although these things may be debilitating to those who suffer from it, these "disabilities" are much more debilitating for the victims than for the sufferers.

Victims otherwise known as the rest of your citizens and tourists. Let's be honest with each other, Greece, diabetes and organ transplant recipients aren't suffering from an illness that affects the lives of the rest of your citizens -- other than financially, that is. But these people, who suffer from these other mental illnesses, harm otherwise innocent people.

Greece, you have always been rather high my list of places to visit; your rich ancient history, gorgeous views, wonderful food (minus the tripe). This recent decision of yours, though, is seriously making me rethink my travel plans.

Tourism is a great moneymaker for your almost bankrupt country, and I don't really see how providing government subsidies to those who suffer from "illnesses" -- mental illnesses whose impulses sufferers are rarely able to stop acting upon -- will do much to help your economic situation.

I mean, sure, you can argue that now Greece will be a beacon for the pedophiles and pyromaniacs of the world, but perhaps this isn't the contingent of the population you'd really like to have tour Greece. As I said, I'd love to visit Greece. However, I don't think I'd like to visit Greece knowing that I'd have to tie my daughter to my arm, clutch my purse, and jump every time someone lights a match. I have a feeling that I'm not the only person who feels this way.

I understand that pedophiles and pyromaniacs are in every society, and they are an issue that all governments must deal with. Let me suggest a more palatable solution for all of us potential tourists: that you take all of the money you would hand out to these sufferers and instead, use the money to build a government run institution where they can reside without interacting with the public. Not only will you be helping these mentally ill people, but you will also be taking a stride to try and make Greece's streets safer for its citizens and tourists.

Greece, please keep in mind that diabetes patients or organ transplant recipients aren't suffering from an illness that affects the lives of the rest of your citizens -- other than financially, that is. But pedophiles, pyromaniacs, and kleptomaniacs harm otherwise innocent people. Really, Greece, as a civilized nation, do you really want to help keep free those people whose mental illnesses lead to criminal activity?

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard signs new deal

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:05 p.m. ET Jan. 12, 2012

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) -Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is set to spend the rest of his career at Anfield after signing a new deal that will involve an ambassadorial role when he stops playing.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who has spent his entire career at Liverpool, signed a new "long-term" deal on Thursday.

"This is the club I love and is the club I have supported since I was a young boy," Gerrard said. "I am living the dream as the captain of one of the biggest clubs in the world. I love coming to work every day and the experiences I have had since I was eight years of age and first signed for the club, I wouldn't change them for the world.

"To extend that and to hopefully have some more good times in a red shirt is what I want."

Gerrard has appeared just 10 times in the first five months of the season because of a groin operation and ankle infection.

But he has scored in three of his past four appearances, with his a penalty kick on Wednesday night clinching a 1-0 victory in the first leg of the League Cup semifinals against Manchester City.

"In this day and age, there's not many people who go through their football career and represent just one club, especially people with quality like Steven," Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said. "If you're happy where you're playing, you're enjoying what you're doing and you enjoy the football club, I don't see any reason to move - and it's fantastic for us that he hasn't."

While Gerrard expects to have several years remaining playing at the top level, plans have already been put in place for him to continue being an influence off the pitch in an ambassadorial role when he eventually retires.

"It's really flattering for me that the club have offered me the chance to stay when I eventually hang my boots up," the England international said.

OnLive Desktop app streams Windows 7 to your iPad

Cloud gaming service OnLive has an iPad app that has been stuck in Apple approval limbo for a month. While its future is uncertain, OnLive has another iPad app that will be launching later this week. It won?t, however, be streaming LA Noire or Batman: Arkham City to your tablet. This version of OnLive will stream a Windows 7 desktop onto your iPad.

While there are, at this moment, several ways to get a remote version of Windows on an iPad (LogMeIn and other remote desktop apps), they all require you to access your own computer. Additionally, controlling a mouse cursor with your finger can be a headache-inducing experience that removes all fun and ease from using an iPad.

OnLive Desktop changes all of this. You don?t need your own copy of Windows; you don?t even need your own PC. Just as OnLive?s gaming service streams its own remotely-run games to your device, its desktop streams your own instance of Windows to your iPad. Perhaps most importantly, though, it?s optimized for touch. So if you want to open Microsoft Office, you don?t have to drag a mouse cursor and simulate a double tap; simply tap the icon and it will open. Consider it a little preview of Windows 8 for tablets ? only you don?t have to buy a new device.

The base version of the OnLive Desktop app will be free, but it has limits. The free version gives you 2GB of cloud storage, and comes pre-installed with Word, Excel, and Powerpoint ? all with touch optimization. But an OnLive Desktop Pro app will be launching soon, which will up your storage to 50GB, let you install additional apps, and save your Windows environment for return visits. The Pro version will cost $9.99 per month, and will be launching at a later date.

In addition to consumers, OnLive is also aiming its app towards enterprise customers. If you?ve ever used OnLive?s gaming apps, you?ll be familiar with the Arena: go there to be a spectator in others? games. OnLive is using the same tech to allow business customers to collaborate on projects.

This has the potential to be huge. Smartphones and tablets are the principle players in our digital worlds. As far as they?ve come, they still trail desktops in terms of processing power and storage. Solutions like OnLive?s gaming and desktop solutions use the internet to fill that hole. If you have solid enough of a connection, there will soon be little that you can?t do on an iPad.

OnLive Desktop will initially only be available for iPad, but Android and Mac OS X versions will be launching later. The free OnLive Desktop app has already been approved by Apple (if only its iPad gaming app could say as much), and is set to launch this Thursday. OnLive encourages interested customers to sign up early at the source link below.

US: Iran has not yet decided to build nuclear bomb

FILE - In this April 8, 2008 file photo provided by the Iranian President's Office, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, center, visits the Natanz Uranium Enrichment Facility some 200 miles (322 kilometers) south of the capital Tehran. Iran has begun uranium enrichment at a new underground site well protected from possible airstrikes, a leading hardline newspaper reported Sunday, Jan. 8, 2011. (AP Photo/Iranian President's Office, File) NO SALES

(AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says Iran is laying the groundwork for making nuclear weapons someday, but is not yet building a bomb and called for continued diplomatic and economic pressure to persuade Tehran not to take that step.

As he has previously, Panetta cautioned against a unilateral strike by Israel against Iran's nuclear facilities, saying the action could trigger Iranian retaliation against U.S. forces in the region.

"We have common cause here" with Israel, he said. "And the better approach is for us to work together."

Panetta's remarks on CBS' Face the Nation, which were taped Friday and aired Sunday, reflect the long-held view of the Obama administration that Iran is not yet committed to building a nuclear arsenal, only to creating the industrial and scientific capacity to allow one if its leaders to decide to take that final step.

The comments suggest the White House's assessment of Iran's nuclear strategy has not changed in recent months, despite warnings from advocates of military action that time is running out to prevent Tehran from becoming a nuclear-armed state.

Iran says its nuclear program is only for energy and medical research, and refuses to halt uranium enrichment

Several Republican candidates have called for a tougher line against Iran, saying they believe it is committed to building the bomb. "If we re-elect Barack Obama, Iran will have a nuclear weapon," said Mitt Romney. "And if you elect Mitt Romney, Iran will not have a nuclear weapon."

Rick Santorum has said that the U.S. should plan a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities and "say to them that if you do not open up those facilities and close them down, we will close them down for you."

Iran has opened two dozen of its facilities to international inspectors, but has refused in defiance of the U.N. Security Council to suspend its uranium enrichment.

A leading hardline Iranian newspaper reported Sunday that Iran has begun uranium enrichment at a new underground site well protected from possible airstrikes.

Kayhan daily, which is close to Iran's ruling clerics, said scientists have begun injecting uranium gas into sophisticated centrifuges at the Fordo facility near the holy city of Qom.

In a talk at a Brookings Institution forum in December, Panetta said an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would "at best" delay Iran's nuclear program by one or two years. Among the unintended consequences, he said, would be an increase in international support for Iran and the likelihood of Iranian retaliation against U.S. forces and bases in the Mideast.

Panetta did not discuss the issue directly on Sunday's "Face the Nation." But Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey, appearing with the defense secretary, said that he wanted the Iranians to believe that a U.S. military strike could wipe out their nuclear program.

"I absolutely want them to believe that's the case," he said.

Panetta did not rule out launching a pre-emptive strike.

"But the responsible thing to do right now is to keep putting diplomatic and economic pressure on them to force them to do the right thing," he said. "And to make sure that they do not make the decision to proceed with the development of a nuclear weapon."

Panetta said if Iran started developing a weapon, the U.S. would act. "I think they need to know that ? that if they take that step ? that they're going to get stopped."

Dempsey also said that Iran has the military power to block the Strait of Hormuz "for a period of time" if it decides to do so, but that the U.S. would take action to reopen waterway. "We can defeat that," he said.

Panetta said closing the strait would draw a U.S. military response. "We made very clear that the United States will not tolerate the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz," he said. "That's another red line for us and ... we will respond to them."

A number of experts say Iran is unlikely to close the strait, through which Gulf oil flows, because the action could hurt Iran as much as the West.

But a second Iranian newspaper, the Khorasan daily, on Sunday quoted a senior commander of the powerful Revolutionary Guard force as saying Tehran's leadership has decided to order the closure of the strategic oil route if the country's petroleum exports are blocked.

Iranian politicians have issued similar threats in the past, but this is the strongest statement yet by a top commander in the security establishment.

Official: Expelled Venezuelan has left the US (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A Venezuelan diplomat ordered out of the U.S. last weekend only left the country this week, an Obama administration official said Wednesday, even though Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez claimed she had long since returned home.

Livia Acosta Noguera, Venezuela's consul general in Miami, was in the United States on Sunday when she received notice that she was being expelled, the official said. She was given until Tuesday to leave the United States and met the deadline, said the official, who wasn't authorized to speak publicly on the matter and demanded anonymity.

Acosta's expulsion followed allegations that she discussed possible cyber-attacks on U.S. soil while she was stationed at the Venezuelan Embassy in Mexico.

Chavez claimed on Monday night that Acosta returned to Venezuela in December, learning of her looming expulsion from Venezuelan intelligence. "We already knew this was going to happen," Chavez said during a live television broadcast, flanked by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Chavez said Acosta left Miami to "avoid situations that could become even more dangerous." He derided her expulsion as "another demonstration of arrogance from the ridiculous empire."

Acosta will continue working in Venezuela's foreign service despite, he added, saying she remained an honorable professional despite being "verbally attacked, reviled, demonized."

The State Department on Sunday gave Acosta 72 hours to leave, standard diplomatic procedure for someone declared persona non grata.

The move came after an FBI investigation into allegations detailed in a documentary aired by the Spanish-language broadcaster Univision last month. According to the documentary, "The Iranian Threat," Acosta discussed a possible cyber-attack against the U.S. government while assigned as a diplomat in the Venezuelan Embassy in Mexico.

The documentary was based on recordings of conversations with her and other officials, and alleged that Cuban and Iranian diplomatic missions were involved. Citing audio and video obtained by the students at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Univision said Acosta was seeking information about the servers of nuclear power plants in the U.S.

After the documentary aired, the State Department called the allegations "very disturbing" and officials said the FBI was investigating.

(AP) ? As required, Alabama's players whooped it up amid the confetti and fireworks, yet there was something muted about this championship celebration.

Turns out, these guys knew the ending to the sequel before they even got to the Big Easy.

For two months, the Crimson Tide stewed over its first meeting with top-ranked LSU. By the time the team touched down in New Orleans, there was little doubt in anyone's mind about the outcome. Not just win, but dominate.

Boy, did they ever.

With a smothering display of old-school football, No. 2 Alabama blew out the Tigers 21-0 in the BCS championship game Monday night, celebrated a bit and headed back to Tuscaloosa with its second national title in three years.

The Crimson Tide also claimed the top spot in the final Associated Press poll for the eighth time, tying Notre Dame for the most of any team in college football. Coach Nick Saban's team was an overwhelming choice with 55 of 60 first-place votes.

"We knew what we were capable of," offensive lineman Barrett Jones said. "I guess that's kind of arrogant, but it's the way we felt. We felt like we were capable of dominating, and we did that."

Credit one of the greatest defenses in college football history, a bunch of NFL-ready players such as Courtney Upshaw and Dont'a Hightower who made sure LSU (13-1) never had a chance.

When Jordan Jefferson dropped back to pass, he was swept under by a tide of crimson. When the LSU quarterback took off running, he must've felt like Alabama had a few extra players on the field. It sure seemed that way.

"It feels like a nightmare," Jefferson said. "We just didn't get it done on offense. Some defenses have your number, and Alabama had our number."

LSU beat the Crimson Tide (12-1) in overtime on Nov. 5, a so-called Game of the Century that was roundly criticized as a dud because neither team scored a touchdown.

The Rematch of the Century was next, after Alabama worked its way back up to second in the rankings to claim a spot in the BCS title game. Turns out, it was even less of a classic than the first meeting, much closer to "Speed 2" than the "Godfather II."

But the Alabama defense was a thing of beauty, putting its own spin on this postseason of high-scoring shootouts.

"They are unbelievable," said Jones, relieved that he only has to go against them in practice. "That defense is as good as any defense I've ever seen. They rush the passer, they have awesome linebackers and they're great in coverage. They really don't have any weaknesses. They have to be as good as any defense ever."

LSU didn't cross midfield until there were less than 8 minutes remaining in the game. The Tigers finished with just 92 yards and five first downs, on the wrong end of the first shutout in the BCS' 14-year history.

"This defense is built on stopping them, and that's what we did," said Upshaw, the game's defensive MVP. "We wanted to come out and show the world we beat ourselves the first game. We wanted to come out and dominate from start to finish, and that's what we did."

The Crimson Tide, piling up 384 yards and 21 first downs, spent much of the night in LSU's end of the field, setting up Jeremy Shelley to attempt a bowl-record seven field goals. He made five of them, matching a bowl record. Then, as if responding to all the critics who complained that an offensive powerhouse such as Oklahoma State or Stanford should've gotten a shot in the title game, Alabama finally made a long-overdue trip to the end zone.

With 4:36 remaining, Heisman finalist Trent Richardson broke off a 34-yard touchdown run.

It was the lone TD that either of the Southeastern Conference powerhouses managed over two games, plus that overtime period back in November.

"It felt so good to get that touchdown against LSU," lineman D.J. Fluker said. "That's all we talked about. We said we were going to get (Richardson) a touchdown, and we did it."

On LSU's one and only trip into Alabama territory, the Tigers quickly went back, back, back ? the last gasp ending appropriately with the beleaguered Jefferson getting the ball jarred from his hand before he could even get off a fourth-and-forever pass.

"We didn't do a lot different," Saban said. "We did some things on offense formationally. Our offensive team did a great job. Defensively, we just played well, played the box. Our special teams did a great job."

The coach has now won a pair of BCS titles at Alabama, plus another at LSU in 2003. He's the first coach to win three BCS titles, denying LSU's Les Miles his second championship. The Tigers will have to settle for the SEC title, but that's not likely to ease the sting of this ugly performance.

"I told my team that it should hurt," Miles said. "We finished second. It's supposed to hurt."

LSU simply couldn't do anything ? running or passing. Kenny Hilliard led the Tigers with 16 yards rushing, while Jefferson was 11 of 17 passing for 53 yards, usually hurrying away passes before he was sent tumbling to the Superdome turf. He was sacked four times and threw a mystifying interception when he attempted to flip away a desperation pass, only to have it picked off because his intended receiver had already turned upfield looking to block.

A.J. McCarron was the offensive MVP, completing 23 of 34 passes for 234 yards. Richardson added 96 yards on 20 carries. But an even bigger cheer went up when the defensive award was presented to Upshaw, who had seven tackles, including a sack, and spent a good part of his night in the LSU backfield.

"The whole defense is the MVP," Upshaw said. "The whole defense. Roll Tide, baby. Roll Tide!"

With the way his defense was playing, McCarron simply had to avoid mistakes and guide the offense into field-goal range. He did that to perfection.

"When you have a great offensive line like I have, and great players around you, it makes your job easy as quarterback," McCarron said. "I've got to give all the credit to them. I wish I could have the whole team up here."

While LSU was used to getting big plays from its Honey Badger, cornerback and return specialist Tyrann Mathieu, Marquis Maze dealt the first big blow for the Crimson Tide with a 49-yard punt return midway through the opening quarter. He might've gone all the way to the end zone if not for a leg injury that forced him to pull up. Punter Brad Wing was the only defender left to beat, but Maze had to hobble out of bounds.

McCarron completed a 16-yard pass to Darius Hanks at the LSU 10, setting up Shelley for a 23-yard chip shot field goal. If nothing else, Alabama had accomplished one of its goals coming into the game: to at least get close enough to the end zone for its embattled kickers to have a better chance of converting.

In the first meeting, Shelley and Cade Foster combined to miss four field goals ? all of them from at least 44 yards. In the do-over, Foster handled kickoffs while Shelley also connected from 34, 41, 35 and 44 yards. Not that it was a flawless kicking performance. Shelley had another kick blocked and pushed another wide right. In addition, he clanged the extra point off the upright after Richardson's touchdown.

It didn't matter.

LSU's best weapon was Wing, who averaged nearly 46 yards on nine punts. That was about the only highlight for the purple and gold, which failed to match its BCS title game victories in 2003 and 2007, the last two times the game was played in New Orleans, about 80 miles from its Baton Rouge campus.

"We couldn't sustain any consistency," Miles said.

Miles never considered switching to backup quarterback Jarrett Lee, who started the first eight games for the Tigers ? four of those while Jefferson was serving a suspension for his involvement in a bar fight.

In all likelihood, it wouldn't have mattered.

Not against an Alabama team that was determined to write a different ending.

"We fell short the first time and we didn't play well," safety Mark Barron said, "but we showed that we were the better team tonight. We shut them out."
