SimpleTV clarifies shipping dates, tells backers units will start arriving October 10th

According to Simple.TV, there have been articles circulating around the interwebs that may have caused confusion amongst parties interested about the shipping dates of its facile white puck. So, in order to induce some clarity, the folks behind the project have posted a Kickstarter update to let its backers know their Simple.TVs will be arriving soon enough -- somewhere between October 10th and 15th, to be precise. On the other hand, Simple.TV is also set to start taking pre-orders on its website tomorrow from people who missed out on the crowd-funded party, with these particular units estimated to ship "within 20 days" after the order has been placed. The good news is we're only a couple of weeks away from its long-overdue arrival; in the meantime, however, don't forget we have our own hands-on for you to graciously pore over.

The PJ Tatler ? Survey Says: Majority of Small Business Owners ...

The survey, conducted by the National Association of Manufacturers and the National Federation of Independent Businesses, says quite a bit about why America?s economy is so stagnant.

The poll, conducted by Public Opinion Strategies (POS), surveyed 800 small business owners, manufacturers and decision-makers at small and medium-sized companies, with a majority (55 percent) saying the national economy is in a worse position compared to three years ago. Among the chief factors survey respondents cited were federal regulations, taxes, government spending and the cost of health insurance and energy.

Key survey findings include the following:

  • 67 percent say there is too much uncertainty in the market today to expand, grow or hire new workers.
  • 69 percent of small business owners and manufacturers say President Obama?s Executive Branch and regulatory policies have hurt American small businesses and manufacturers.
  • 55 percent say they would not start a business today given what they know now and in the current environment.
  • 54 percent say other countries like China and India are more supportive of their small businesses and manufacturers than the United States.

?Manufacturers have told policymakers in Washington time and again that uncertainty and a negative business environment is turning the American Dream into a nightmare,? said NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons. ?The findings of this survey show that manufacturers and other small businesses have a starkly negative outlook for their future?with good reason. There is far too much uncertainty, too many burdensome regulations and too few policymakers willing to put aside their egos and fulfill their responsibilities to the American people. To fix this problem, we need immediate action on pro-growth tax and regulatory policies that put manufacturers in the United States in a position to compete and succeed in an ever-more competitive global economy.?

Business owners recognize that Obama?s policies are strangling them and the larger economy. But it?s not evident that the rest of the country gets this, or cares.

Iran leader complains to UN about 'continued threat' of military action

Jason Szenes / EPA

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addresses the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly at United Nations headquarters in New York Wednesday.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad complained to the United Nations General Assembly in a speech Wednesday that his country was under the ?continued threat? of military action by ?uncivilized Zionists.?

Ahmadinejad, who is due to leave office next June after serving two four-year terms, was speaking amid growing tensions over claims Iran is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons, its belligerent language toward Israel and its support for Bashar Assad?s regime in Syria. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Israeli leaders have been openly contemplating military action again Iranian nuclear facilities, dismissing Iran's claims and the idea of a diplomatic solution as a dead end.

Israel and many in the West cite Iran?s failure to cooperate fully with nuclear inspectors as an indication that it is seeking nuclear weapons.

Pugnacious Iranian president rips Israel, US

In his speech, Ahmadinejad complained that the world?s leading powers were forcing others to submit to their wishes.

?Continued threat by the uncivilized Zionists to resort to military action against our great nation is a clear example of this bitter reality,? he said, according to a translator.

President Obama tells the United Nations General Assembly that the US will "do what we must" to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

Ahmadinejad also asked people to imagine that wars from the Crusades to Iraq and Afghanistan, and other events and practices in history ? such as slavery, colonial oppression, the current global financial crisis and the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S. -- had not happened.

?Imagine how beautiful and pleasant our lives and how heavenly the history of mankind would have been,? he said.

He put the blame for much of the current problems on the leading countries and called for a new world order. ?The current abysmal situation of the world and the bitter incidents of history are due mainly to the wrong management of the world and the self-proclaimed centers of power,? he said.

US: Iran missile test is 'pure fabrication'

A spokesman for the U.S. mission said the U.S. boycotted Ahmadinejad's speech because of his statements during the last few days -- and because the U.N. scheduled his speech on Yom Kippur.

"Over the past couple of days, we've seen Mr. Ahmadinejad once again use his trip to the U.N. not to address the legitimate aspirations of the Iranian people but to instead spout paranoid theories and repulsive slurs against Israel,? the spokesman said in a statement. ?It's particularly unfortunate that Mr. Ahmadinejad will have the platform of the U.N. General Assembly on Yom Kippur, which is why the United States has decided not to attend.?

Canada's delegation also walked out.

At schools, in shops, and on the streets of big cities and small towns, daily life plays out in Iran.

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama warned the General Assembly that the U.S. would not allow Iran to do develop nuclear weapons.

Obama: US will 'do what we must' to stop Iran getting nuclear weapons

?Make no mistake: A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations, and the stability of the global economy. It risks triggering a nuclear-arms race in the region, and the unraveling of the non-proliferation treaty,? he said.

?That?s why a coalition of countries is holding the Iranian government accountable. And that?s why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,? he added.

World's largest oil trader flouts Iran sanctions

In an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday, Ahmadinejad said he had no knowledge of the whereabouts of Robert Levinson, a private investigator and former FBI agent who vanished in Iran five years ago.

He said he directed Iranian intelligence services two years ago to work with their counterparts in the U.S. to locate him.

"And if any help there is that I can bring to bear, I would be happy to do so," he said.

He also claimed never to have heard of Amir Hekmati, a former U.S. Marine who is imprisoned on espionage charges in Iran.

Hekmati was arrested while visiting his grandmother in Iran in August 2011, and his family has been using Ahmadinejad's visit to New York to plead for his release.

Gov. Christie defends proposed NJ tax cut plan

LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Monday offered his most vigorous defense yet of a plan to trim taxes by 10 percent, saying tax relief has become "even more urgent" because of recent bad economic reports.

Christie's proposal to phase in a modest residential tax cut over three years beginning in January has been at the center of a partisan storm over the state's economic trend.

Democrats agreed to fund the first phase of the cut ? $183 million ? but Christie said they are holding the money political hostage by refusing to release it unless revenue collections meet his optimistic projection of 7.2 percent. Democrats say it would be irresponsible to cut taxes if the state can't afford to do so. Christie vetoed the Democrats' plan for middle-class tax relief in June because it relied on additional tax revenue from the wealthiest 16,000 filers.

"If we want to get the economy moving in New Jersey, we've got to be more competitive with our neighboring states, and we have the highest tax rates in the region," Christie said when asked Monday about the state's finances after an elementary school groundbreaking in Long Branch. "The reason the tax cut is even more urgent now is to try to make us more competitive with these other states."

Sen. Paul Sarlo, a Bergen County Democrat who chairs the Senate Budget Committee, said Democrats persuaded Christie to support a property tax reduction rather than a personal income tax cut, which would disproportionately benefit the wealthy. But, Sarlo said, Democrats have since adopted a wait-and-see approach because of disappointing revenue collections.

Christie has been calling out Democrats for reneging on the deal after he agreed to go along with Senate President Steve Sweeney's proposal for property tax relief. On Monday, the governor upped the ante: If Democrats don't think the state can afford a tax cut, they should propose a corresponding amount in budget cuts to fund the tax break.

Assemblyman Vincent Prieto, a Democrat who chairs the chamber's budget committee, convened a hearing last week to get a handle on how the state finished the 2012 fiscal year on June 30 and how well it's done in the first two months of the new fiscal year. Christie didn't send the state treasurer to testify and on Monday dismissed the effort as a political circus. But Prieto, of Hudson County, said the session shed light on the state's ongoing and significant fiscal problems.

"We all want a tax cut and a successful state, but it must be a responsible tax cut, and we face major fiscal problems unresolved by this administration," Prieto said.

A report released by the treasury showed tax collections are $100 million below projections for the first two months of the fiscal year. The Legislature's budget expert estimates that the state finished 2012 with about $240 million less than projected. The state's unemployment rate hit 9.9 percent in August, well above the national average of 8.1 percent.

Standard & Poor's lowered New Jersey's credit outlook to negative from stable. Two other ratings houses sounded similar warnings about the state's structural budget deficit and ballooning pension fund obligation but retained a stable outlook for the state.

On Monday, Christie railed against what he termed Democrats' obsession with revenue numbers and defended his conditional veto of a bill that would have required prompt monthly reporting of state finances, even though it mirrored an executive order he signed in 2010 requiring the treasury to publish monthly revenue reports.

"When they play political games, that's what they're going to get in return," Christie said of the Democrats. "They know full well revenue numbers aren't final until they're audited."

In the veto message released Friday, Christie proposed including a provision to issue a $10,000 fine to anyone who leaks budget data.

Though the governor's suggestion appeared to be a slap at the Office of Legislative Services, which provides budget information to the Legislature, and lawmakers who provide it to the media, Christie insisted that wasn't so.

"That stuff is not supposed to be disseminated publicly until it's authorized to be disseminated publicly," he said, "and it can have a negative effect on the markets."

Mauritius: The Thinking Mans? ICT-BPO Island

By Martin Conboy

I have just returned from the stunningly beautiful and unique island of Mauritius where I attended that countries ICT- BPO Outsourcing conference, as they get ready for the African BPO explosion. The entire Mauritian industry was there to present their views about the way forward and they have a great story to tell. Interestingly there were ICT-BPO representatives from the UN, South Africa, Namibia, Kenya, Senegal and Ghana. I can see great opportunities for Asian BPO players to partner with Mauritian players to pitch for bi lingual projects as the market starts to shift towards emerging offshore locations as they become increasingly significant.

Mauritius is situated off the African continent east of Madagascar with a population of 1.3 million. The population is an unconventional fusion of Arabic, Indian, Creole, Singhalese, French, English and European all mixed in together to make a fabulous amalgamation of exotic humanity, sort of a universe in miniature like a bit of a global melting pot. Be that as it may they have found the magic formula of how to get along to go along and part of its charm is the peaceful nature of the people.

Although known to Arab and Malay sailors as early as the 10th century, Mauritius was first explored by the Portuguese in the 16th century and subsequently settled by the Dutch ? who named it in honour of Prince Maurits van NASSAU ? in the 17th century. The French assumed control in 1715, developing the island into an important naval base overseeing Indian Ocean trade, and establishing a plantation economy of sugar cane.

The British captured the island from the French in 1810, during the Napoleonic Wars leaving the British in complete control of the Indian Ocean. The Indian Ocean?was a vital part of the chain of trade links that connected the British Empire.?In fact Matthew Flinders who went on to be the first man to circumnavigate Australia was a prisoner of the French at this time. The defeat marked the end of French hopes of seriously disrupting British trade with India.

With strategic bases placed along their trade routes, British convoys were assured a greater degree of safety that the Royal Navy provided with the infrastructure to operate worldwide. Analogous to this, history shows us that Mauritius has always been an important strategically located island and as you will read later so it is again in our new hyper connected world. Its history of being a well placed strategic trading cross road will stand it in good stead as the information super highway opens up new and exciting opportunities in Africa.

Independence from the UK was attained in 1968. A secure stable democracy with regular free elections and a positive human rights record, the country has attracted considerable foreign investment and has earned one of Africa?s highest per capita incomes.

Since independence in 1968, Mauritius has developed from a low-income, agriculturally based economy to a middle-income diversified economy with growing industrial, financial, and tourist sectors. For most of the period, annual growth has been in the order of 5% to 6%.

The government?s development strategy centres on creating vertical and horizontal clusters of development in these sectors. Mauritius has attracted more than 32,000 offshore entities, many aimed at commerce in India, South Africa, and China. Investment in the banking sector alone has reached over US$1 billion. The economy is gradually shifting from light manufacturing and agriculture towards a services based economy. The services sector now represents over 70% of GDP.

The country now promotes its ?five pillars?, Tourism, agriculture, off shore financial services, manufacturing and ICT- BPO. Mauritius, is well poised to take advantage of African BPO Growth.

Mauritius? sound economic policies and prudent banking practices helped to mitigate negative effects from the global financial crisis in 2008-09. GDP grew more than 4% per year in 2010-11, and the country continues to expand its trade and investment outreach around the globe.

Over the last five years, Mauritius has embraced some bold economic reforms that have positioned the country among the most open, competitive and lowest tax economies in the world. Capitalizing on its strategic location and relying on its sound domestic economic base, Mauritius is increasingly being viewed as a global business platform for many international players in the ICT/BPO industry. The island has a well-developed digital network infrastructure and high bandwidth capabilities.

The outsourcing industry has witnessed significant transformation over the last 5 years. Starting with basic data entry tasks, the industry graduated to a high proportion of voice-based services and a range of back-office processing activities. The last 3-4 years have seen the scope of services expanding to include increasingly KPO complex processes involving rule-based decision making and even research services requiring informed individual judgment.

Today, the sector faces a unique opportunity to enhance its role as a high value added service provider and capitalize on the expanding BPO landscape especially in Africa. The country is gradually being recognized as a centre of excellence in the areas of finance, accounting and IT services. ?Mauritius has developed technology and free trade zones like Ebene Cyber city, which houses 52 IT/BPO companies.

What Makes Mauritius an attractive destination for BPO?

Mauritius has a proven track record of political stability and has developed a pro-business environment. Outsourcing of services has been possible only because of the tremendous advancements in telecommunication technology over the years. Mauritius has a strong IT infrastructure and support. This technological support forms the backbone of this booming outsourcing industry. Moreover, the country has also broadcast its Data Protection Act and is working with the European Union for the ?Adequacy Finding? thus ensuring the safe transfer of sensitive and personal data.

Mounir Qalam, General Manager, CSL, a major BPO vendor in Mauritius and part of Mauritius & France Telcom said,? Mauritius has already embraced the opportunity presented by ICT and offshoring, and is currently? handling BPO projects from around the world and specifically? the USA ?and ?France?.

The BPO industry in Mauritius is poised for future development and it is exquisitely positioned on the edge of Africa as that geography opens up to BPO. While India and Philippines have well articulated attributes and are recognized as mature BPO centres, Mauritius can be used as a complementary destination targeting both English and French speaking markets.? This bilingual capability of easily switching between French and English with ease is impressive. According to Everest Mauritius is a low cost, stable, investor friendly location suited to support moderate scale facilities.

CSL?s?Qalam went on to say, ?Mauritius is well situated, politically stable and has a very steady economy. The population is bilingual with a strong service culture. This is a function of Mauritius being a well known first class tourism destination?and superior customer service is in our DNA.?

This is supported by Accenture, who has been operating in Mauritius since 2002 and who now has over 1,100 employees.? Yves Bernaert commented, ?Mauritius is a destination of choice for French-speaking, English-speaking and other European-based clients of Accenture because of the availability of multilingual workforce at competitive rates, modern and reliable infrastructure and the country?s political and social stability.?

In related news Orange has just announced that Nathalie Clere is appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Mauritius Telecom, succeeding Jean-Fran?ois Thomas.

Nathalie Clere, graduated from the University of Grenoble and holds a MBA from Euromed Management. After working for Telediffusion de France (TDF) in Paris and then for Thomson in Singapore, where she headed up Consumer Products Division, she joined France Telecom-Orange in 1994. She held a succession of management positions, most notably in France, Lebanon and Portugal, before being named Director of France Telecom-Orange?s operations in Poland, where she coordinated relations between the France Telecom group and TP.
