To Measure Gods

A light rain had started, dotting the pavement in the hours that had passed sunset. Despite the brief, soft fall that was hardly any worry to the nightlife that ventured out after dark, the grey clouds overhead were threatening to pour. Such things didn?t bode well for the thousands that waited in line outside various nightclubs in the downtown core, held back from liquor and music by red velvet ropes. While the burly men that played bouncers claimed that each establishment was at max capacity an occasional celebrity face would waltz by, name on famed list or hundred dollar bill neatly slipped to grease palms. Even known names and expensive bribes might not have gained entrance to Midas; the nightclub was the place to be in all of New York.

Such things didn?t bother Dallas Chatzi. The twenty-something male was already inside, sliding his way through the multitudes of sweaty, bouncing figures. A charming smile, pristine white, was spread across lips. His hand, holding an empty cup like a chalice, was raised high over head as he slipped his way through the crows and towards the bar. Victory was in his grasp, it seemed, as an elbow quickly landed on marble countertops. Hard body leaned forward, hand outstretched with a platinum card extending to gain attention. A busty blonde behind the counter was quick to make way to him. He leaned forward, yelling something in her ear that was lost to the music but made her laugh and blush. A months salary would bet that topic wasn?t polite.

?Gin, tonic. Hold the lime!? He yelled over the pounding tunes and the bartender was quick to oblige. Despite the show of limitless card such extravagance wasn?t needed. His face was recognized by staff on sight, name a permanent fixture on any and all guest lists. With a bottomless bank account and an endless appetite for women, liquor and all things fun, there was rarely a night where Dallas was not among the patrons of the club.

The tanned male bobbed his head in time to the music, bright eyes turning to the DJ as the song began to come to close. At six-foot-five he could clearly see over the many heads that swarmed about, jumping to the tempo of the house remixed song. Dark hair was freshly cut, fading in length from top to bottom, and spiked in that just-rolled-out-of-bed-but-still-damn-fine kind of way that always seemed to be in style. Despite obvious wealth his body was clad in jeans and a tight fit t-shirt, neither of which boasted any big name brand but seemed good quality all the same.

The previous song faded into a newer, faster on. Eyes a lit, his hand shooting into the air with a holler of excitement. He turned, leaning to the young woman beside him, yelling at her. ?I fucking love this song!?

Not moments later his hi-ball arrived. He thanked the barkeep, handing her his plastic card, and promptly yelled at her; ?Shots on me for everyone!? The crowd around him cheered, those in reach patting him on the back. Several bartenders leaped to help pour away his money, passing out shots. Shots, nameless though smelling sweet and strong, were handed out.

?For you.? He smiled, handing a shot to the closest person to him and taking another for himself. Glass raised, cheers-ing the crowd before downing it himself. Now that was a way to start the night right.

94% Moonrise Kingdom

Containing Wes Anderson's unique touch of heavy handed direction, the only things that allow "Moonrise Kingdom" to somewhat elude the extreme quirky detachment (customary in overrated films such as "The Royal Tenenbaums") is the heartwarming central story concerning two children in love and, in fact, some rather visually stimulating direction. In Anderson's seventh feature film with writer/director credits (this particular film was also co-written by Roman Copploa) he tells the story of two elementary school age lovers, Suzy and Sam (superbly played by Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman) who run away together after finding life with their families insufferable. There is also a parallel (and very misguided) storyline which concerns Suzy's mother and father, played by Frances McDormand and Billy Murray, a Scout Master, played by Edward Norton, and a Police Captain (Captain Sharp) who is played by Bruce Willis, all in search of the two missing children as a storm furiously approaches. Allow me to say this before I get into the meat of my review: while "Moonrise Kingdom" contains Anderson's quirky for quirky's sake storytelling, this film is more like "Rushmore" (undeniably Anderson's crowning achievement) than any of his other films, simply because of its central, child driven storyline. In saying that, "Moonrise Kingdom" does have major flaws. So, if you should hear from any other "critics" that this is "the best film of the year" (because many critics are saying just that) they are wrong. "Moonrise Kingdom" (as an entire film) is just OK. Side Note: OK, so before I get any hateful e-mails proclaiming how my feelings towards "Moonrise Kingdom" directly coincides with my perception of how most of Anderson's work is overrated, art-house fanboy fodder, don't hit send just quite yet. Read my reasoning's below, and then you can decide for yourself. One could go so far as to say that "Moonrise Kingdom" is a tale of two films: one containing an intriguing storyline following two children and their perception of true love, and the other a distracting and rather boring storyline which follows a group of mundane adult characters. So, suffice to say, when Anderson chooses to focus on the children's story, the film becomes rather endearing, but when the lens moves back towards the shrug inducing adult storyline, the entire film seems to stop dead in its tracks, as the audiences is forced to wade through mounds of his eccentric visuals and characters with Diablo Cody-esque (emotionless) speech patterns. So, other than the children's storyline (thankfully the main storyline) some very interesting direction and a fabulous score, everything else here is pretty forgettable, especially all of the adult actors and actresses; and that is a head shaking disappointment when one considers the talent involved. I mean, every adult here does a decent job, but the script fails all of them miserably and persistently. Murray and McDormand are pretty much wasted here, given nothing really to do, and Harvey Keitel is horrendously miscast as the Scout Commander. Ed Norton plays maybe the most interesting character as a kind of pathetic man-boy Scout Master, but said character's potential is exhausted little more than half way through. As for Willis, he plays the Captain Sharp character with a reserved tone that many will confuse as subtlety brilliant acting, when in reality it is a performance that comes off as really kind of dull. Not to say Willis isn't a very good actor, the fact is (and I will say this over and over again) that really none of the adult characters are interesting (or have anything interesting to say) AT ALL; hence what they do and how well of a performance these A-list actors attempted to give is irrelevant here. Anderson's directing is what it is; an acquired taste some might say. As far as "Moonrise Kingdom" is concerned, his direction here is rather genius (for the most part). Near the end there are some questionable uses of cornball CGI, but other than that (as a whole) this is one of the best LOOKING films of the year. Again, it is the storyline (and portion of the dialogue), not the visuals (no matter how overbearing) that fail this film. Final Thought: Maybe there was a larger conceptual thing going on here that I totally missed. Maybe all of those annoying little interludes by Bob Balaban (Ghost World), who plays a narrator of sorts, were meant to be seen as a kind of omnipotent look at the lives of simple people. Or maybe this was a story attempting to define love, ruined by Anderson's fetish for writing stories full of detached adult characters. Overall, "Moonrise Kingdom" can be categorized as having an effectively romantic central storyline, while still containing major, eye rolling flaws that will be unavoidably evident to the non-hipster (non-film geek) communities; aka 90 percent of audiences. Debbie Wilson's Family Brain Injury Blog: Gutsy youngster's ...

Patrick Majewski and his mum Helen at home. Picture: Nic Ellis/The West Australian

Almost nine months after the tragic accident that claimed his father's life, eight-year-old Patrick Majewski has made a remarkable physical and emotional recovery that few adults could manage.

Mature beyond his years, Patrick is paralysed from the chest down.

Otherwise, he shows no outward sign of his crippling injuries from falling 19m down a rocky gorge in Karijini National Park in October.

His 31-year-old father Chris, the principal of Leinster Primary School, died in a desperate bid to save Patrick, who was left with extensive brain and back injuries and needed 10 weeks in Princess Margaret Hospital.

When Patrick returned home, his speech was slow and the movement in his left arm was weak.

But now his voice is perfect and loud as he scolds younger siblings Izabel, six, and Cameron, four, for making too much noise and happily acts as dealer when his family plays card games.

He has never complained about being in a wheelchair and is more worried about how his mother is coping.

"Patrick was always a caring old soul but after the accident he changed in a really amazing way," Mrs Majewski said at the family home in Bunbury. "He has gone from quiet and shy to outgoing and flamboyant.

"I don't know whether it is the result of the brain injury or his way of dealing with what's happened, but he's really come out of his shell.

"He's become very protective of us and taken on some of Chris' role.

"On Mother's Day, he asked me about Father's Day because he was already thinking ahead to that time this year when it will be tough for us."

Mrs Majewski said she struggled to remember life before the accident and took one day at a time.

When she had a bad day, she only had to look at Patrick, who is in Year 3 at a regular school and has learnt to shower himself and get in and out of the car.

As well as having regular rehabilitation therapy at PMH, he is learning to play the guitar and takes part in wheelchair sports.

The challenge of getting Patrick to school and his activities was made a little easier this week when the WA Civilian Widows Trust provided $25,000 through the Apex Foundation towards the cost of a new station wagon to accommodate his wheelchair.

Bunbury-Koombana Apex Club applied for the grant and Bunbury Honda provided the car at a reduced price.

Mrs Majewski said her children had accepted their father's death but they still had times when they sat and cried together.

This weekend they are visiting Leinster as a family for the first time since the accident, which Mrs Majewski said would be bittersweet as they caught up with old friends but were reminded of their life in the town before her husband was killed.

"Our life is different now and not what we imagined but it's our 'new normal' and what Chris would have wanted," she said.

Free summer fun? Check your local college.

Colleges and universities offer concerts and lectures throughout the year, and you don't always have to be a student to partake. Just check your local college or university's calendar.

By Trent Hamm / June 30, 2012

A Stanford University student walks though the halls of the Stanford University campus in Palo Alto, Calif., in this February 2012 file photo. Checking your local university's events calendar is a good way to spot free concerts, lectures, and festivals.

One of my favorite things about college was the public lectures and presentations by interesting people. During my years, I heard fascinating talks from scientists and politicians and entrepreneurs.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

The university would hold these on a central building on campus and just throw open the doors for everyone. You didn?t have to be a student or faculty member to attend these lectures. You just had to show up at the door.

One of my wife?s favorite things about college were the free open-air classical concerts that the university held several times a year. We were dating then, and the two of us would often pack a picnic meal, spread out a blanket on the grass, and lay flat on our backs listening to the music.

Again, these concerts were completely free. All you had to do was show up; no affiliation with the university required.

At these events ? and many others ? I couldn?t help but notice the wide variety of people there. There were college students, of course, and plenty of faculty, but there were also families with children, elderly folks, and blue-collar workers. It was a university event, but it was also a community event.

Even now, Sarah and I enjoy taking our family to offerings at local colleges and universities. There are free concerts, presentations, parades, children?s exhibits, and other things going on all the time throughout the year.

So, how can you find out what?s offered at your local college or university?

You can start by?checking out their event calendar. The nearest sizeable university to me is Iowa State University, which offers a?wonderful online event calendar. Many other universities offer very similar online functions. These make it incredibly easy to identify events on campus.

For example, on the calendar I linked to, there?s a free concert, a bookbinding workshop, and a children?s story time, and in the next couple of days there?s a floral workshop, a lecture on plant breeding, and several art workshops. Some of the events have a cost, but many others are free. Plus, this list just comes from the summer months, when activities are relatively slow.

You might also want to check out the school?s?visitor?s guide, which can clue you in to interesting exhibits and other permanent things worth seeing and visiting at the school. Many major colleges and universities offer an online visitor?s guide, like?this one.

Many universities have museums, art exhibits, walking tours, and countless other interesting things going on all the time.

Most universities and colleges also have?special events and festivals?where you?ll find an enormous variety of free and interesting things to do.

Again, in the case of Iowa State, there?s an annual festival called VEISHEA each April that includes a parade, tons of exhibits and demonstrations, a free food festival, and countless other things. We often spend an entire Saturday there without spending a dime while thoroughly enjoying ourselves.

If you live anywhere near a college or university, keep an eye on the campus. There?s an abundance of free and fun things to do there, even if you?re not involved with the school.

This post is part of a yearlong series called ?365 Ways to Live Cheap (Revisited),? in which I?m revisiting the entries from my book ?365 Ways to Live Cheap,? which is available?at Amazon?and at bookstores everywhere

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Police in Virginia say a woman has been killed when a tree fell onto her home and they're responding to reports of other injuries stemming from storms that ravaged the mid-Atlantic region.

Fairfax County police spokeswoman Mary Ann Jennings says the woman was killed in the Springfield area during the height of the storm Friday night.

Jennings says authorities elsewhere in the county were responding to reports of a park police officer whose car was hit by a tree and an 18-year-old man struck by a power line.

The wave of violent storms knocked out power to nearly 2 million people in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. It came after a day of sweltering heat, including a record-setting 104 degree reading in Washington, D.C.
