Cognitive Dynamic Therapy Associates (CDTA), a multi-specialty psychology group practice with offices in Oakland and Wexford, has created The Kurtz Center for Love & Intimacy to help couples achieve healthy relationships and satisfying sexual lives. It also trains and certifies sex therapists. The Center, which is based in CDTA?s Oakland offices, is named in honor of Dr. Shirley Kurtz, a psychologist who has been affiliated with the practice since its inception more than 30 years ago. She is also one of the first Pittsburgh therapists to be certified by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (ASSECT).

?I am deeply honored by the generosity of spirit which my colleagues have shown me,? says Dr. Kurtz, who received a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1974, when few women pursued advanced degrees. She also studied under William H. Masters and Virginia E. Johnson, pioneers in research about human sexual response and the diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders, and co-authors of two classic texts in the field.

The Kurtz Center provides an array of clinical services and workshops related to intimacy. Issues addressed include communication problems, sexual dysfunctions and addictions, and keeping the passion in relationships. The Center also offers numerous sex therapy training services, including supervision for ASSECT certification. CDTA has more ASSECT-certified therapists than any psychology practice in the United States.

?This concentration of wisdom and experience about sexuality and intimate relationships is a unique asset to the Tri-State Area,? says Robert Schwartz, Ph.D., president of CDTA and director of The Kurtz Center. ?Such a resource is especially valuable in this era of struggling marriages and sexual misbehavior. The Kurtz Center is a fitting tribute to the profound impact that Shirley Kurtz has had on the lives of so many people, including mine. Her achievements and selflessness in helping couples overcome obstacles, and in training sex therapists such as I to help others, have resulted in thousands of people reaching levels of fulfillment which they thought were unattainable.?

?Shirley is the personification of a valued colleague and friend,? adds ?Lawrence Glanz, Ph.D., vice president of CDTA and director of the practice?s Anxiety Disorders Program.? ?Her insightfulness and good nature have had a profound impact on those of us who have the pleasure of working with her, and I look forward to many more years of benefitting from her wisdom and character.?

The Kurtz Center?s clinical services include:

  • Communication Problems
  • Infertility/Adoption
  • Loss of Sexual Desire
  • Pre-Marital & Marital Conflicts
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Sexual Addiction

The Center?s workshops include:

  • Marriage 101: Survival Skills for Lasting Love
  • Keep the Sexual Passion Burning: Why It Fades and How to Stoke the Fire
  • Sex After Children

The Center?s training activities consist of:

  • Ongoing Sex Therapy Seminars
  • Supervision in Sex Therapy
  • ASSECT Certification Supervision

(AP) ? Apple has paid $60 million to settle a dispute in China over ownership of the iPad name, a court announced Monday, removing a potential obstacle to sales of the popular tablet computer in the key Chinese market.

Apple's dispute with Shenzhen Proview Technology highlighted the possible pitfalls for global companies in China's infant trademark system. It also posed a challenge for the communist government, which wants to attract technology investors to develop China's economy.

Apple Inc. says it bought the global rights to the iPad name from Proview in 2009 but Chinese authorities say the rights in China were never transferred. A Chinese court ruled in December that Proview still owned the name in China. Proview, which is struggling financially, asked Chinese authorities to seize iPads in an apparent effort to pressure Apple to settle.

"The iPad dispute resolution is ended," the Guangdong High People's Court said in a statement. "Apple Inc. has transferred $60 million to the account of the Guangdong High Court as requested in the mediation letter."

China is Apple's second-largest market after the United States and the source of much of the Cupertino, California-based company's sales growth.

Proview hoped for more money but felt pressure to settle because it needs to pay debts, said a lawyer for the company, Xie Xianghui. He said Proview sought as much as $400 million and might still be declared bankrupt in a separate legal proceeding despite the infusion of settlement money.

"This is a result that is acceptable to both sides," Xie said.

The dispute centered on whether Apple acquired the iPad name in China when it bought rights in various countries from a Proview affiliate in Taiwan for 35,000 British pounds ($55,000). The December court ruling said Proview, which registered the iPad trademark in China in 2001, was not bound by that sale, even though it was part of the same company.

The settlement should be good news for both Apple and its customers because it clears a potential obstacle for the company to start selling the new iPad 3 in China, said You Yunting, a lawyer for the DeBund Law Office in Shanghai.

"It is a good deal for Apple, because sales of iPads, which are in great demand, can compensate for this $60 million cost," You said.

Apple has yet to announce a China release date for the iPad 3 but the country's telecommunications equipment certification agency approved the tablet in May.

The case gave Chinese authorities a chance to show that their courts could impartially resolve intellectual property disputes but also raised the possibility that technology investors might be put off by a negative outcome for Apple. Chinese regulators said Proview clearly owned the mainland name rights under Chinese rules.

Without a formal ruling, it will be hard for companies to draw lessons about how Chinese courts will handle such disputes in the future, said Stan Abrams, an American lawyer who teaches intellectual property law at Beijing's Central University of Finance and Economics.

"It's such an atypical case," he said. "Certainly, the details and specifics of this kind of commercial dispute aren't going to give us any long-term lessons."

The outcome reflects Chinese courts' preference for encouraging adversaries in commercial disputes to settle instead of pushing for a ruling, Abrams said. He said the relatively small size of the settlement by Apple's standards suggested Proview gave in, possibly under pressure from either its creditors or the court.

All of Apple's iPads are made in China by Foxconn Technologies Group, which employs more than 1 million people in sprawling factories. Brazil's government says Taiwan-based Foxconn plans to open factories there to produce iPads and other products.

Shenzhen Proview Technology is a subsidiary of LCD screen maker Proview International Holdings Ltd., headquartered in Hong Kong.

A Hong Kong court ruled in July that Proview and the Taiwan company both were "clearly under the control" of the same Taiwanese businessman, Yang Long-san, and had refused to take steps required to transfer the name under the agreement. The judge said the companies acted together "with the common intention of injuring Apple."

However, that judgment had no automatic force in the mainland case because Hong Kong, while Chinese territory, has a separate legal system.

Apple also ran into a trademark dispute before it launched the iPhone in 2007.

Cisco Systems Inc., the maker of networking hardware, had owned the trademark since 2000 and used it for a line of Internet-connected desk phones. After Cisco sued, the companies reached an undisclosed settlement and the phone launch went off as planned.

The dispute came amid complaints Beijing is failing to stamp out rampant unlicensed Chinese copying of goods ranging from music and Hollywood movies to designer clothing and pharmaceuticals.

But unlike "trademark squatters" who register names of products already sold abroad and then demand foreign companies pay for the Chinese rights, Proview registered the iPad name long before Apple planned its tablet computer.

"The only thing companies really should take form this case is, be careful when you do transactions, be careful with your contracts," Abrams said. "Be careful you're doing it the right way or you could pay a lot for your mistakes."

Rev. Earl E. Johnson: Jerry's Kids

It started at Glover's the Clothier when I went to get my Boy Scout uniform. He would measure my inseam and pretend to measure "accurately." It was 1962.

In summer school, there were tickle sessions and wrestling matches on the old sofa from the teacher's lounge placed in the main hallway while the floor was being varnished. Just an innocent grope. Playing dirty.

Then as Team Announcer, it was normal for him to be around the boys locker room, and to come into coach's office and watch while being treated for a really bad case of jock rash. One time another coach showered with us but we knew he had a hot girlfriend and was having sex in her convertible.

There was lots of premarital sex going on with the upperclassmen because Vietnam was raging. So many teenage girls were getting pregnant and marrying as an honorable draft deferment. Sex was in the air. Six packs and country roads make babies.

You could drive at 15 ? with a learner's permit. Mom and Dad worked all the time.

High School classes competed to gather the most soap bars to send to Vietnam. There was another competition that didn't cost postage to box and send stuff overseas. It was called Pennies Positive Nickels Negative. There were four jars outside the Principal's Office labeled for each class. The goal was to sabotage another class with Nickels (or Dimes and Quarters) while putting Pennies in your own class's jar. It was a huge success and really harnessed the glee in "penalizing" other classes with nickels (lunch money) while forging full speed ahead with bags of pennies for ones own class.

I was asked by him to help count the money after school. We would sit side by side with piles of coins to be wrapped and counted. The table covered our laps. He unzipped and put my hand on his erect penis. I kept moving my hand away. He kept putting it back.

At 14, you feel like you are an adult and in control of what happens to you and what doesn't. You are always horny. You already have a girlfriend and you know how to slow dance because of dance lessons in the seventh grade. Inspired by older kids talking about how they lost their virginity helped feed the imagination of those who hadn't, whether it is true or not. All you needed was a car.

You might have practiced on your mother's bra in the laundry basket, but that is another story.

Each new revelation of child sexual abuse can cause one to relive and re-experience ones own trauma even 40 years later. No one gets over anything. Whether it is a priest or a teacher, a trusted relative or family friend, each event is unique, and damage done over so-called "man lessons" (Sandusky). One issue may be that the predator doesn't understand or appreciate the consequences of their criminal actions. They are always "helping" the child.

So many stories, so many examples of abuse and how he did it and continued to do it.

Start your own charity as a "front" to help troubled and ignored young boys, get married and distract your wife with multiple foster kids, make travel and gifts normal, yet special for the intended special chosen one.

Jerry Sandusky's kids were subjected to Jerry's methods that the world simply doesn't understand. To teach penetration, penetrate. To show how to come, demonstrate. Soap, rinse and repeat. Make the dirty little secrets cleaner. And threaten. Your Dad will lose his job at the university and your family will lose their home and starve. No remorse for Jerry, after all, his methods worked! Until they didn't.

My Dad had a very bad temper and I think would have killed him if he had known.

That year, I missed 30 days out of school out of 180 and did everything I could to get attention even while not aware of the underlying motivation, the emotional pain that surfaced in chronic tardiness for marching band in the morning, to sinus infections in my sinus infections. The day I was to be admitted to the National Honor Society, the principal withdrew my name and initiated a "better behaved" student. The same for the American Legion's Boy State. Did he have any awareness or training on how to deal with a sexual predator on the high school faculty?

I took all that anger to college and excelled, in part, to get my parents to notice me. Thanks, therapist(s)! Then, on to Yale Divinity School, where closeted faculty sought disciples to share sacred intimacy. No need for sex ed in seminary. Liberation theology and the Living Theatre taught us to shed our modesty and our clothes. If it feels good, do it, until you remember that it didn't. To be so intelligent and so stupid. To help others as a distraction for not taking care of oneself. What's past is past until it resurfaces again and again. After the Age of Aquarius and before the Age of Consent, with the Vietnam War going on, King and Kennedy being assassinated, and a world gone crazy, whom could I tell? Who could I talk to? After all, I thought I had been an equal participant. My shame was my own. It was 1968.

When Dad died, he was in the VFW's Honor Guard holding a rifle across the edge of the cemetery. I had kept the secret. I imagined him shooting me even as I knew they were blanks. I worked to keep focus on remembering and treasuring my Dad and all of his sacrifices, and helping my young nephew put his teddy bear next to his grandfather in the coffin. It was 1989.

Back at my 40th high school reunion, I reconnected with my old classmates and my old rock band reunited and played great therapeutic rock and roll. I was able to directly ask my classmate why he had been so mean to me and discovered he had been abused by the same teacher. I thought I was the only one. Even after 40 years, it was so good to talk. It was 2008.

Thank you Pennsylvania jurors for making the right call. Even today, it's standard of practice for the defense to blame the victim for the crime. The college town has been educated and the crime prosecuted. Jerry still doesn't think he did anything wrong.

There are thousands out there who have come forward and will come forward but only when they are ready, their memory triggered, the pain re-surfaces and is too much to carry and own in 2012. And forgiveness without justice may not be forgiveness. He is dead but his crimes live on. I will not carry him anymore. I will not keep his crimes secret.

Euro summit optimism in markets dented by US data

(AP) ? European markets made further gains Monday as investors continued to cheer the continent's latest efforts to deal with a debt crisis that has clouded the outlook for the global economy.

However, their advance faltered as U.S. stocks fell after a closely-watched U.S. manufacturing survey suggested the sector is contracting again. Though Europe's debt crisis has been the markets' focus for weeks, U.S. economic indicators remain key to global sentiment.

Investors appear convinced that the measures agreed last Friday by the leaders of the 17 countries that use the euro will reduce the risk that Italy and Spain, which are the eurozone's third and fourth largest economies, would need a sovereign bailout anytime soon.

The leaders agreed a set of measures to alleviate the financial crisis, including the creation of a central authority that can rescue banks directly, without adding to government debt, and changes to the way the bailout fund operates.

In the longer-term, the eurozone still faces huge problems ? debt levels remain high in some countries and the economic problems are huge. Figures released Monday showe the unemployment rate in the 17-country eurozone edged up to 11.1 percent, a new high since the euro began in 1999.

"So far the wheels have not yet fallen off as investors dare to hope the fabric is stitched better this time around," said Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak & Co. "A couple of days of reflection have failed to put a dent in investors' spirit with equity prices holding on to gains while government bond yields also remain lower."

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.5 percent at 5,601 while the CAC-40 in France rose 1 percent to 3,227. Germany's DAX was 0.8 percent higher at 6,467.

The euro, however, retraced some of its rise on Friday ? it was 0.5 percent lower at $1.26. Oil prices also gave up some of Friday's $7 gains. Benchmark crude for August delivery was down $1.29 a barrel at $83.67.

In the U.S., stocks were down after the Institute for Supply Management said its index of manufacturing activity fell to 49.7 points in June, its lowest for nearly three years and well below expectations for 53.5. A reading below 50 indicates contraction.

"This is not good," said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG. "Not good at all."

Shortly after the figures were released, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 0.4 percent at 12,822 while the broader S&P 500 index fell 0.4 percent to 1,357.

Trading volumes in the U.S. are likely to be fairly light ahead of Wednesday's Independence Day holiday. However, activity is likely to pick up in the run-up to Friday's monthly nonfarm payrolls data, which often set the market tone for a week or two after their release.

"Many market participants may choose to extend their holiday by taking off either the first or last few days of this week," said David Morrison, senior market strategist at GFT Markets. "With payrolls coming out on Friday, it seems more likely that traders would prefer to miss the first half of the week, but overall volumes could be light."

Elsewhere, signs that China's economy is slowing also helped cool the stock rally. As well as the payrolls figures for June, investors will look forward to policy decisions from the European Central Bank and the Bank of England later in the week. The ECB is widely tipped to cut its main interest rate to a record low from its current 1 percent to help the ailing eurozone economy, while the Bank of England could back another monetary stimulus to get the British economy growing again.

Earlier in Asia, sentiment was dented by signs that the Chinese economy, the world's second-largest, continues to slow. Chinese industrial production fell to a seven-month low in June, according to HSBC's purchasing managers index survey.

China's Shanghai Composite index increased less than 0.1 percent to 2,226.11. But Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell less than 0.1 percent to 9,003.48 and South Korea's Kospi slipped 0.1 percent to 1,851.65. Markets in Hong Kong were closed Monday to commemorate the hand-over of the territory to China in 1997.

PST: Xavi had Spain on its game

source: Reuters

Man of the Match:?Even without his two assists,?Xavi Hern?ndez would have been the game?s best player, providing his typical, metronomic, tempo-setting performance. He was the impetus behind a team that showed an uncommon assertiveness from the opening whistle, staking an early claim to their third European title. The two assists were mere symptoms of the constant probing and stretching he used to unlock Italy?s defense.

NBC Sports: Spain reigns once again, winning Euro 2012 title

Packaged for takeaway:

  • From the get go it was clear: This wasn?t the same Spain team we?d seen through most of the championship. Perhaps it was the occasion. Perhaps it was the knowledge they?d gained in their first 90 minutes against Italy. Perhaps it was Italy?s tactics. Regardless, Spain was much more energetic and direct than they?d been throughout the tournament.
  • Two symptoms of that assertiveness:
Spain was taking an uncommonly high number of shots from 20-24 yards. Xavi and Andres Iniesta each had multiple cracks from distance, and while most of them were blocked before reaching Gigi Buffon, the tried hinted at a markedly more aggressive approach ? one that was willing to give the ball back to Italy.
That same view was evident in the team?s willingness to try low-percentage through balls. Again it was Iniesta and Xavi, and again the strategy had limited early success. But these were noticeably more direct choices that Spain had made throughout the tournament.
  • It didn?t take long for Spain to break through. Int he 14th minute, Iniesta hit Cesc Fabregas?with a long through ball as Spain?s false nine ran into the right of the box. Fabregas made for the line and chipped a ball back to the edge of the six, with David Silva heading the opening goal high into the left of net.
  • It was the first time in the tournament the Italians had trailed.
  • Spain maintained their intensity for a few more minutes before (surprisingly) ceding the ball to Italy. At halftime, the Italians held a 52-48 possession edge (per UEFA), though they?d generated no real chances. Aside from an early sequence that won three corner kicks in the span of a couple of minutes, Spain was largely untroubled.
  • Iker Casillas deserves most of the credit for that. Whenever Italy played a ball into his area, he was there with a small push, a one-handed punch, a slap or an outright block (when needed). It didn?t look especially pretty, but it was effective. Casillas often chose the less dramatic, more controlled option rather than do something to take himself out of position.
  • Toward halftime, after Italy had been dictating much of the game?s tempo, Spain caught them. A long ball out of the back was chested down to Jordi Alba, who went on a run after giving to Xavi. Hern?ndez put a perfect through ball into the left of the area, where Alba was able to easily beat an oncoming Buffon.
  • Prandelli starting tweaking immediately after halftime. Antonio Cassano came off for Toto Di Natale. Ten minutes later, Thiago Motta was on for Ricardo Montolivo, a move that would quickly bring an end to Italy?s chances.
  • In the first half, Giorgio Chiellini had to be brought off with an injured left leg, making the Motto sub Italy?s last. Just past the hour, Motta?s hamstring appeared to give out. He was stretched from the pitch, eventually hobbling to te locker room. For the last half hour, Italy played with 10 men.
  • With his team down two goals, Cesare Prandelli will get a lot of sympathy after his third sub blew up in his face. It was still a risky, probably misguided, move.
  • From there forward, the match was typical Spain, the champions hogging the ball until the final whistle. Along the way, Fernando Torres scored (84?, from Xavi), Juan Mata scored (88?, from Torres), and Spain put up the most lopsided score in European Championships? finals history.
  • And with the assist, Torres improbably won the Golden Boot. What? Yes: Among the handful of players who had three goals, only he and Mario G?mez had an assist (the first tiebreaker). Torres wins the award, having played fewer minutes than G?mez.
  • Not that they needed it, but the match played out as a statement game for Spain. With the determination they showed at the start of the match, it was as if La Roja?wanted to answer everybody who?d complained about the way they won games. The way Italy played (not cowering into a shell) may have helped, but with a four-goal win, Spain provided a retort to those choosing to nit-pick at their style.
  • It was also a claim to being the best team of all time. The debates can never be settled ? discussions of which team, across time, is superior ? but by giving a resounding performance in a major competition final, Spain may have provided the trump card that can sway those barstool debates.
  • That makes two Euros and a World Cup in succession, the first time a European nation has won three straight major titles. It beg the question: How long will it last? It?s a question that will have to wait until Monday. Tonight, Spain gets one day to bask in the glow of their shockingly easy championship-clinching performance.

Afghan official: NATO airstrike kills 3 civilians

(AP) ? An Afghan provincial official says a NATO airstrike has killed three civilians in the east of the country. A spokesman for the coalition says initial reports of the strike do not suggest any civilian deaths.

Logar province spokesman Din Mohammad Darwesh says NATO forces were on a foot patrol in Charkh district Monday morning when they came under fire from insurgents. He says they called in an airstrike and the bombardment killed three shopkeepers.

NATO spokesman Maj. Martyn Crighton says initial reports show only one airstrike in Charkh on Monday, with no civilian deaths. He says the strike was called on insurgents who were planting a bomb. Crighton says a number were killed and the body of at least one tested positive for traces of homemade explosives.
