The problem with self-improvement is knowing when to quit ...

What do you want to improve? Finances, relationships, household repairs, car repairs, game playing, computer skills? It?s all at your local library, bookstore, or on the internet. Get busy!

What does that mean?
For me, that?s an easy question to answer: you stop when you are done improving, growing, and learning. In short, I?ll stop trying to improve myself when I?m ready to die. Until then, every day is another opportunity to learn and improve myself.

Given the nature of the person who said the quote, and the flippant nature of many of his comments, I would presume he was attempting to be funny with this quote. And to an extent, it is. But it is also a serious subject as well.

When do you quite improving? When you think you?re done. Are you ever going to be perfect? Nope. Will you ever achieve ?good enough?? Probably. Will you be satisfied at that level, or will you want more? Or perhaps you will be done with that aspect of yourself, and begin working on other parts of yourself. The answer will be different for each of us.

Why is self-improvement important???
Are you all you can be? Are you all you want to be? I suppose if you set your sights low enough, you could answer yes to both questions. But those questions are directed inward, and are easily diminished, diluted, or ignored by those who consider their present state ?good enough.?

Instead, I would ask another question, one that is directed outwards. Are you able to give or help others in a manner that you are truly proud of, or is there room for improvement? I can easily come up with excuses and reasons why I?m good enough for me. But it?s harder to come up with excuses, much less reasons, for others.

To me, there is always room to improve. Sometimes we improve ourselves for our own benefit or amusement. Other times we do it for the benefit of others. But whether it?s our bodies, our minds, our skills or our spirits, there is always something that can be improved. What do you want to improve today?

Where can I apply this in my life?
The others you help could be your family, your friends, your social groups, or the world at large. If you were acting as the treasurer of a social group, could you contribute more (or better) if you took a class (or read a book) on accounting? Self improvement would help you help others, right?

I recently lost 30 pounds and am starting on an exercise and fitness program to help keep me in shape and healthy. Since my teenage boy took up Track & Cross Country running, he can now out-pace and out-distance me. That?s a first for me, and it isn?t sitting very well. 8)

I doubt I?ll catch up to him in either speed or endurance. But I do hope that improving my fitness level will help me stay healthier and stronger for a longer period of time. That is both for my sake and for the sake of my family. I know that at some point, I?ll be ?good enough? at running, but I am certain that I?ll never be ?good enough? to quit improving myself.

Take a moment and think about your life. From your viewpoint, what parts of your life are perfect, and what could use some improvement? With respect to your outside-yourself life, what parts of what you do for others is perfect? After you have that list put together, consider everything else in your life that could stand to be improved in some way shape or form.

OK, that was a little silly. You probably have some ?good enough? aspects in your life, and your outside-yourself life. But I can?t imagine anyone could actually believe they were able to put down that they were perfect at anything, unless you were being a little silly?

So, what of the long list of things at which you could improve yourself is at the top of your list? Is it internal aspect, or something for how you work with others? What is the goal, and how will you know when you have achieved it? You might want to grab some paper and start making notes.

What steps are there between where you presently are and the end of the goal? Big steps, so that you get from here to there in a couple of steps. Each of those steps will have lots of sub steps, but get the high level view of where you?re going on paper.

For learning to play chess, it might be ?get a chess board, find a chess club (real-world or online), find some chess software, get a book or two, practice, practice, practice!? Ok, that might have been a little simplistic, but you get the basic idea, right?

Take the first thing you will do, and break it down into smaller chunks, eventually into things you can do in a single step. For getting a chess board, you might want to look online for a couple different boards you like and can afford, then head down to a local game shop and see what they have (I prefer to support local stores when I can).

The last thing to do is to take the first step. It?s not real until you act, so get busy. Do the first thing, and build some momentum. It doesn?t have to be big, but it does have to happen. Tomorrow is not soon enough. Unless you?re ready to quit.

Bankr Personal Finance Review ? 148Apps ? iPhone, iPad, and ...

Bankr Personal Finance lets users effortlessly keep track of finances, and the new Siri integration makes it possible to update transactions on-the-go.

Have you ever wanted a personal finance assistant? You?re not alone. With today?s economic climate, it?s essential to stick to a budget. Creating a budget sounds simple on the surface, but it?s vital to keep track of all those little expenses that occur in order to make it a reality.

Bankr Personal Finance has set out to make it easy for users to not only create and track their expenses but to also monitor budgets, incomes, stocks and more. It?s by no means a new app as it was originally released in July of this year, but the recent update really beefed up the UI and functionality.

Before getting started, Bankr Personal Finance takes users through a quick tutorial to teach them how to use it. Once users read through the introduction, it?s time to get started. Simply tap on the plus button in the lower right corner to add an account or stock. A new account requires an account name, balance and budget. Those wishing to add a stock will need to search for the stock symbol, purchase price and quantity.

Selecting an account makes it possible to add and view all the transactions. The best feature incorporated into the new update is that there are now two ways to add transactions. Users can go in and manually enter their income and expenses via the calculator and then name and categorize them, or it?s possible to use Siri without opening Bankr or typing anything.

The app is able to pull from the iPhone?s reminders so when users say things like ?Remember I spent $4.98 at Starbucks? or ?Remember I bought football tickets for $100.54? the transaction is added to the account. The catch is that in order for Siri to work properly, users need to press and hold on the account you wish to use until a star is shown. If the star is on the wrong account, users could potentially mess up their expenses.

Along with the revolutionary Siri integration, Bankr Personal Finance is also optimized for the iPhone 5, offers support for repeating transactions, displays graphs for budget and spending, provides passcode settings and even lets users change the currency.

There?s not much that this app can?t do. Honestly, I couldn?t find anything to not like about Bankr Personal Finance. Perhaps it could use some more currency options, or maybe even a way to export transactions and reports, but these are just small improvements for an otherwise flawless application. All in all, it?s powerful, well-designed, refreshing and it just made my life a lot easier. Keep tabs on your money by keeping this app around on the home screen.

'Chicago Fire's' Spencer OK with heavy lifting

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

His face is familiar to "House" fans, but now that the series has ended, Jesse Spencer has joined a new kind of house -- a firehouse, that is -- with "Chicago Fire," a new series that premieres tonight on NBC. He dropped by the TODAY plaza Wednesday, noting that the job required some serious heavy lifting.

"We wear 70?pounds of gear, and the (real-life) firefighters come and laugh at us a lot because we tend to wear -- they wear it ... when they go on a run ... for an hour, hour and a half. We wear it for like 14 hours when we're shooting these sequences. It's constantly drinking water, you can eat whatever you want. It's basically?free exercise," he joked.

Check out what else Jesse had to say in the video!

"Chicago Fire" premieres at 10 p.m. on NBC tonight.

APNewsBreak: Lawyers: Tennis ref passed polygraph

(AP) ? Lawyers for a nationally known professional tennis referee charged in her husband's death say she has passed a lie detector test in which she denied bludgeoning him with a coffee cup.

Lois Ann Goodman's attorneys told The Associated Press late Monday that they have emailed the results to the district attorney's office. They said they suggested that prosecutors re-evaluate the case and consider dismissing charges against the 70-year-old woman.

The lead detective on the case, David Petique, had asked Goodman to take a polygraph test "to clear herself" when she was first under investigation in the month after her husband's death, attorneys Alison Triessl and Robert Sheahen said. But she refused that request on May 3, they said, on advice of her former counsel.

They said she has now fulfilled that request and passed.

"I'm hopeful that they are going to reassess their case," Triessl said in a phone interview. "The facts just don't support that there was a murder. The results of the polygraph prove Lois Goodman did not kill her husband. He died in a freak accident."

A district attorney's spokeswoman said the office will not comment until the material is brought up in court.

Goodman, 70, who has refereed matches between some of tennis's greatest players, has pleaded not guilty to killing her 80-year-old husband by beating him with a coffee cup and using its broken handle to stab him. She has suggested Alan Goodman fell down the steps while holding a coffee cup, causing his fatal injuries.

Alan Goodman died in April. Authorities initially believed he fell down stairs at home while she was away but later decided it was homicide after a mortuary reported suspicious injuries on Alan Goodman's head. Lois Ann Goodman was arrested in August just before she was to referee a match at the U.S. Open in New York.

Triessl said the lie detector test was given by a well-known FBI-trained polygrapher, Jack Trimarco, who has administered more than 3,000 polygraph exams, many in high-profile cases. His report was instrumental in getting charges dismissed against a man initially charged in a Dodger Stadium assault case.

The Note's Must-Reads for Tuesday, October 9, 2012

The Note's Must-Reads are a round-up of today's political headlines and stories from ABC News and the top U.S. newspapers. Posted Monday through Friday right here at www.abcnews.com

Compiled by ABC News' Jayce Henderson, Amanda VanAllen, and Carrie Halperin

PRESIDENT OBAMA: The Wall Street Journal's Liz Rappaport and Brody Mullins: " Goldman Turns Tables on Obama Campaign" When Barack Obama ran for president in 2008, no major U.S. corporation did more to finance his campaign than Goldman Sachs Group Inc. This election, none has done more to help defeat him. LINK

MITT ROMNEY: ABC News' Gregory J. Krieg and Dana Hughes: " Foreign Posture vs. Foreign Policy" Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign promised he would outline a "stark contrast" between his proposals and President Obama's "failed" efforts to put an American stamp on the evolving face of the Middle East. But a closer look at Romney's remarks today in Virginia reveal a varied gameplan, with some policies surprisingly similar to the president's and others, as advertised, broadly divergent. LINK

The Hill's Julian Pecquet and Justin Sink: " Romney looks to drive home argument that Obama is weak" Mitt Romney's foreign policy address Monday hammered home his argument that voters should oust an in-over-his-head President Obama. With 29 days to go before Election Day, Romney worked hard to capitalize on a strong debate performance last week that polls suggest has voters giving his candidacy a second look. A Pew Research poll released Monday afternoon showed Romney with a 4-point lead. LINK

The New York Daily News' Kristen Lee: " Romney attacks Obama's Middle East policy in speech to Virginia military cadets" Gaining ground in several new polls, a resurgent Mitt Romney on Monday sought to burnish his foreign policy credentials with a major policy speech attacking President Obama's handling of the Middle East. He accused Obama of emboldening Iran, alienating Israel, abandoning Syrian rebels, withdrawing troops from Iraq too abruptly and mishandling the consulate attack in Libya that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens. LINK

2012 CAMPAIGN: USA Today's Catalina Camia: " Pew: Romney leads Obama among likely voters" Mitt Romney now leads President Obama by 4 percentage points among likely voters after a strong debate performance last week, according to polling by the Pew Research Center. The GOP presidential nominee has a 49% to 45% edge, Pew says. Last month, Obama had an 8-point advantage among those most likely to vote in the Pew survey. LINK

Bloomberg's Lisa Lerer: " Romney Courts Military, Obama Woos Latinos in Tight Race" With polls showing the election tightening, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are appealing to core constituencies, with the Republican challenger using two visits in Virginia to reach out to military voters and the president wooing Hispanic support.Romney, buoyed by his victory in the presidential debate last week, struck an assured tone. "People wonder why it is I'm so confident we're going to win," a soaked Romney told several hundred supporters standing in the rain at a rally yesterday in Newport News, Virginia. "I'm confident because I see you here on a day like this." LINK

The Washington Times' Stephen Dinan: " Round of polls shows tight race after Obama-Romney debate" Powered by his widely-acclaimed debate performance last week, Mitt Romney has closed a 9 percentage-point gap and is once again tied with President Obama in the latest The Washington Times/Zogby Poll conducted by Zogby Analytics, released Monday. LINK

PAUL RYAN: Los Angeles Times' Lisa Mascaro: " Paul Ryan's supply-side roots run deep in Washington" Paul D. Ryan was plucked from Congress to be Mitt Romney's running mate largely on his reputation as the wonkish and charismatic House Budget Committee chairman, but under the evening sun at the county fairgrounds he was debating beer. LINK

SWING STATES: The New York Times' Jeff Zeleny and Jim Rutenberg: " With New Vigor, Romney Resets Ohio Campaign"If one place is emerging as a test of Mitt Romney's ability to capitalize on a new dynamic in the presidential race, it is Ohio, where he is intensifying his advertising, deploying more troops and spending four of the next five days. Ohio, whose 18 electoral votes are critical to Mr. Romney's candidacy, has bedeviled him like no other battleground state. LINK

The Washington Post's Karen Tumulty: " Across the electoral map, a mixed picture for candidates down the ballot" In the past six years, there have been three national elections, each of them producing a wave, in which races up and down the ballot moved in generally the same direction. Democrats won big in 2006 and 2008, only to see those gains reversed in the mid-term election of 2010. This year, however, the better analogy in many states may be a breeze. The presidential contest will ripple the waters but not necessarily determine which way they flow. LINK

Politico's Alexander Burns: " Bill Clinton now appearing ? everywhere" Don't look now, but the former president and star of the 2012 Democratic convention is mapping out a pretty intensive general-election campaign schedule. In addition to his appearances for the Obama campaign, Bill Clinton will be at this event tomorrow: President Bill Clinton will endorse four Northern California Democratic candidates at a UC Davis rally hosted by the Davis College Democrats on Tuesday. The candidates, Congressman John Garamendi (CA-03), Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09), Ami Bera (CA-07), and Jose Hernandez (CA-10), are all in races identified by the DCCC and NRCC as competitive.
