Common factors evidenced in vibrant faith communities?

Here is my short list of the "common factors" evidenced in vibrant faith communities, based on 30 years of observation in 3 denominations:

Evangelism is practiced as sacred story-listening - for fresh & local evidences of God's Presence & Activity

Prayerful and strategic leadership that actually "leads" with a public sense of urgency and accountability.

Joyful ministry organized around teams that build appreciatively on the strengths of each member

Demonstrated commitment to nurturing significant relationships inside and outside

Quality of worship is assessed on its tendency to equip and transform both newcomers and leaders

Hosting sacred conversations is elevated to an art form

The community's life focuses on engagement with God's mission through strengths-based ministry development

A preference for decision-making processes that lead to commitment (instead of agreement)

Stewardship is treated as a "whole being" way of bringing our resources to join God's mission in the world

Controversial Spewed Iron Experiment Succeeds as Carbon Sink

News | Energy & Sustainability

Dumping iron into the ocean stimulates blooms of diatoms that pull down carbon dioxide in the atmosphere--but only under the right conditions

Fertilizing the ocean with iron could help reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, according to newly released findings of a research cruise. Why? In a word, diatoms.

A hunger for iron rules the microscopic sea life of the Southern Ocean surrounding ice-covered Antarctica. Cut off from most continental dirt and dust, the plankton, diatoms and other life that make up the broad bottom of the food chain there can't get enough iron to grow. And that's why some scientists think that artificially fertilizing such waters with the metal could promote blooms that suck CO2 out of the air. Then, when these microscopic creatures die, they would sink to the bottom of the ocean and take the carbon with them.

Such blooms occur naturally, of course, so the first part of the hypothesis is not controversial. What remained questionable until now is whether such blooms in fact sequestered much carbon or if it was being quickly recycled back into the atmosphere. The problem for scientists is that oceanic waters tend to mix, which makes monitoring and delineating an experiment in the ocean challenging.

The solution, devised by biological oceanographer Victor Smetacek of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Germany and his colleagues, was to use an eddy. Such swirling currents can be remarkably self-contained. In fact, the new research to be published in Nature on July 19 shows that less than 10 percent of the eddy's waters mixed with the surrounding ocean. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

With such ideal conditions, the group dissolved seven metric tons of iron sulfate in acidic seawater and spewed the solution into the ship's propeller wash starting on February 13, 2004, covering a circular patch in the eddy of some 167 square kilometers. That's the equivalent of adding 0.01 gram of iron per square meter, levels similar to those found in the wake of a melting iceberg. They then monitored the fate of the patch off and on for five weeks, while also adding supplemental iron fertilizer after two weeks to keep concentrations high enough to promote growth.

As expected, microscopic sea life bloomed. Chaetoceros atlanticus, Corethron pennatum, Thalassiothrix antarcticus and nine other species of diatoms grew in abundance, boosting the amounts of chlorophyll, organic carbon and other signs of life in the waters to depths of as much as 100 meters beneath the surface.

By the middle of the third week after the researchers stopped adding iron, the bloom began to die. So many diatoms died, in fact, that they overwhelmed any natural systems for decay and fell in large numbers below 500 meters in depth. At least half of the total bloom biomass sank below 3,000 meters, according to the scientists' calculations. Fresh diatom cell corpses littered the seafloor as well, and the research team believes that much of the bloom ended at the bottom as a layer of fluff. "Since the aggregates sank so rapidly and the water column was more or less 'empty' on day 50, they must have settled out," Smetacek argues. "Layers of fluff have been reported from various regions, including the Southern Ocean."

3:33 pm

Two of today?s biggest movers, () and EAE Technology () were among the most searched for companies on Finance as traders monitored market reaction to today?s statements from the companies and looked for the latest broker comments.

AEA plummeted 77 percent to 0.05 pence after it told investors that it does not expect to find any buyers for the business and all of the strategic options it is currently considering will result in little or no value for shareholders.

The climate change consultancy said that despite ?constructive discussions? with its lender Lloyds, it has been unable to find a long term solution to the existing levels of debt and the funding costs of its current retirement benefit obligations.

While AEA was the heaviest faller in London markets, Leni was among the top performers in the oil and gas sector, rising 14 percent to 0.89 pence per share after revealing the terms of a deal to sell its Spanish assets to a private buyer for ?8 million.

The deal, which will help the company focus attention on its assets in Trinidad, is due to close by July 27.

It will be a cash sale and a ?200,000 non-refundable deposit has already been made, plus any delay to the closing of the deal will incur a daily penalty of ?50,000.

Additionally, Leni today announced that it is acquiring the entire project equity in the Goudron field in Trinidad. The decision was prompted by the recent success with the work over of five wells on the property.

The competent persons report on the reserves of the Goudron field is expected to be available in August.

?LGO has several development projects and step-out exploration opportunities within Trinidad's prolific, but under explored, onshore basins,? said chief executive of Neil Ritson.

?We are very excited to be able to participate in the vibrant onshore oil development activities in Trinidad to which LGO's expertise and capital can be effectively applied.?

The report from Leni was atop the list of the most read RNS statements along with interim management statements from midcaps Telecom Plus () and Booker Group ().

Utility services group Telecom reported that organic growth has continued to be strong, giving it confidence that its full year results will be met, while the interim results should show a significant increase in earnings and revenues.

During the June quarter, the group added 10,917 new customers, taking the total to 426,406, while the number of services has increased by 53,316 to 1,434,339.

?Confidence within our distribution channel has never been higher, and we are encouraged by the improved productivity we are starting to see from new distributors following the introduction of a new coaching programme in January this year,? Telecom told investors today.

?As a result, we anticipate further strong organic growth over the coming months.?

On message boards, some investors noted that the company said that the uncertain macroeconomic environment is positive for the business with consumers trying to reduce their expenses by switching to a new supplier.

They said this should provide support for the stock as the economic backdrop is likely to remain challenging for a while.

Despite the positive report, shares in telecom fell 1.3 percent to 858.5 pence in early deals as it lost its dividend attractions.

Booker Group also upheld its full year guidance.

The upbeat trading update showed that the food wholesaler?s non-tobacco sales rose 3.9 percent during the 12 week period to June 22 with like for like sales ? which exclude the impact of new store openings ? rising 3.8 percent.

This increase more than offset a 1.7 percent drop in tobacco sales, which the group said was due to the phasing of duty mark up versus a year ago.

Fellow FTSE 250 constituent HomeServe () also found itself at the centre of attention today after confirming that it is currently not in takeover discussions.

The statement was made in response to a report in the Daily Telegraph, which said the home emergency repair group has received and rejected an approach from Cinven, KKR and Apax.

HomeServe shot up 12 percent to 187.3 pence this morning as investors liked the fact that the group rejected the approach, which reportedly valued the business at ?1 billion compared with its current market cap of ?600 million.

Shares in HomeServe have been under pressure from an ongoing investigation ofpossible mis-selling by the FSA.

At the tail-end of 2011, the company said it had suspended all its UK telesales and marketing activities following a review by accountants Deloitte.

Chief executive Richard Harpin said in May that it had been a challenging year for the UK business, but it continued to make strong progress in developing its international businesses.

Espirito Santo said that until the investigation is over, the group?s risk profile will remain high.

However, the bank upheld its 210 pence per share price target on the stock, saying its international growth opportunity, supported by its low capital intensive model and recurring income base presents an ?attractive business model?.

?Our 210p fair value is materially above the current volatile share price, but there remains a wide range of possible regulatory outcomes hence we expect the shares to continue trade below the perceived inherent value of the business,? said analyst David Brockton.

Other popular stock exchange statements included a trading update from Judges Scientific () and Motive Television?s () agreement to ?supply its Anytime Anywhere technology to South Africa?s Siyaya Free to Air.

Siyaya has recently submitted an application to South Africa's licensing authority to be allocated a pay TV frequency.?

Motive and Siyaya will enter into a formal service agreement once the six months application process has been successfully completed.

The services to be provided by Motive would include engineering work for the integration, development, and implementation of the Motive technology and possibly Motive serving as systems integrator.

Meanwhile, scientific instruments maker Judges said its performance during the June quarter was solid and its interim results are expected to show organic revenue growth of eight percent compared with the same period of 2011.

Including turnover from the recently acquired Deben business and a first time contribution from Global Digital Systems and KE Developments, revenues surged 39 percent.

Order intake during the six-month period showed organic growth of 14 percent and the order book at the end of June represented ten weeks of sales, which was ahead of the level at the start of the year.

?The board continues to be mindful that the global economic climate is fraught with uncertainty,? Judges said in the statement.

?There can be no complacency and the Board views the current trading environment with balanced measures of vigilance and confidence.?

Both reports pushed shares in the companies up with Judges climbing three percent to 706.5 pence and Motive rising six percent to 0.09 pence.

La. teen driving tractor-trailer hits and kills 2 women

By NBC News staff

A 16-year-old Louisiana boy driving a tractor-trailer hit and killed two Texas women who were changing a tire on Interstate 70 near Limon, Colo., at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, The Associated Press reported.

Tristan Martin, of Sulphur, La., was driving a 2003 Volvo tractor-trailer that was pulling a trailer full of horses. The boy was en route to Wyoming with his father to compete in a rodeo, The Denver Post reported.

According to the AP, the boy's father, Michael Martin, 37, initially told the Colorado State Patrol he had been the driver.

The victims, Shun Jones, 48, of Carrollton, Texas, and her cousin, Amanda Omo-Iyamu, 38, of Balch Springs, Texas, were in Colorado to visit family, Jones' son Quincy Jones told The Denver Post.

"My mom was trying to get my family to bond back together like they used to be," he said.

9news.com

The teen's father, Michael Martin, 37, initially told the Colorado State Patrol he had been the driver.

The teen left before troopers arrived, the AP reported, and was charged with two felony counts of leaving the scene of a deadly accident, and one misdemeanor count of careless driving causing death. His father faces one misdemeanor count of false reporting.

The Martins have been released on bail, The Post reported, $500 for the father and $100,000 for the son, according to Capt. Clint Tweden of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

The Martins were driving to Rock Springs, Wyo., to compete in the National High School Finals Rodeo, Lydia Martin, Tristan's aunt told the newspaper.

"We are praying for that family, and we are truly sorry. It is a disaster, a nightmare, and our hearts go out to them," Lydia Martin said.

Martin told The Post that Tristan had a Louisiana personal driver's license, adding that driving a single-axle truck pulling a large horse trailer doesn't require a commercial driver's license.

"[The truck] can be classified as a farm vehicle," she told The Post.

Colorado authorities told WFAA.com they are investigating whether the teen was breaking the law.

?We are investigating whether he was complying with federal guidelines,? Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Mike Baker told WFAA.com.

Stocks end lower after downbeat retail sales

By NBCNews.com staff and wires

A surprise decline in June retail sales was the latest worrying sign from the economy, pushing stocks slightly lower on Monday, but Citigroup earnings limited losses in another forecast-beating report from a bank.

The S&P 500 has fallen in seven of the last eight sessions, weighed down by concerns about the economy. Still, in a sign of resilience, the index is up roughly 7 percent from a low hit early in June despite the worsening economic data.

The drop in retail sales in June, the third consecutive monthly decrease, contrasted with economists' expectations for a small increase and was the latest sign the recovery is flagging, a major concern for investors.

Art Cashin, director of floor operations at UBS Financial Services, told CNBC that events in Europe were also having an effect on stocks.

?The Dow was pulled around like a little puppy on a string by the dollar,? Cashin said. ?So Europe is still driving the bus.?

Shares of Citigroup rose after the third largest U.S. bank reported profit that came in above analysts' estimates. That was despite a 12 percent drop in quarterly earnings due to losses from credit crisis-era assets.

Giri Cherukuri, head trader at OakBrook Investments, which oversees $1.3 billion in Lisle, Illinois, said there was a battle between better-than-expected earnings in the financial sector and worries about the economy.

"The next week or so the market will be driven more by earnings than economic numbers," he said, noting that recent cautious outlooks from U.S. corporations could translate into disappointing earnings as reporting season unfolds.

Citigroup earnings follow results from JP Morgan Chase on Friday that sparked a rally and broke a six-day streak of losses by the Dow industrials.

"Three months in a row of lower retail sales is pretty concerning. People are going to have to lower their GDP estimates," said Paul Zemsky, head of asset allocation at ING Investment Management in New York. "Given that, I'm surprised the market is holding so well."

Zemsky said expectations that earnings turn out better than feared could be one reason. Record low U.S. Treasury bond yields and expectations that the Federal Reserve could support the economy have also helped prop up stocks.

The World Trade Organization ruled in favor of the United States, finding that China discriminates against foreign bank cards. The decision could help U.S. credit card companies like Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

In another credit card development, Visa Inc and MasterCard Inc and banks reached a $7.25 billion settlement with U.S. retailers in a lawsuit late on Friday.

In mergers and acquisitions news, GlaxoSmithKline is to acquire its long-time partner Human Genome Sciences Inc for $3 billion, ending a three-month hostile pursuit of the U.S. biotech company on friendly terms after sweetening its offer.

In another healthcare deal, private equity firm TPG said it would buy U.S.-based Par Pharmaceutical for $1.9 billion.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Concordia professor first to show obesity leads to more doctor visits than smoking

Montreal, July 16, 2012 Statistics show that today, almost one in four Canadians is obese. A deadly trend that has been on the rise for the last thirty years, obesity is associated with diabetes, heart disease and cancer. But is the obesity epidemic putting more pressure on an already strained Canadian health care system?

James McIntosh, a professor in the Department of Economics at Concordia University, is the first to look at the impact of obesity on the number of doctor visits nation-wide.

According to his research, obese individuals visit the doctor more frequently than regular smokers who are at a healthy weight.

"The fact that obesity is more serious than smoking helps people understand the gravity of the problem because they already have some kind of intuitive understanding of how bad smoking is," says McIntosh.

To calculate what would happen if obesity were eliminated entirely, McIntosh used a model created from data that included information from over 60,000 Canadians from the 2010 Community Health Survey. He found that if obesity were not a factor, doctor visits would decrease by 10 percent.

Doctor visits may further decrease when one takes into account the many visits to the doctor for problems related to type 2 diabetes, a disease is related directly to obesity.

It's also possible that obesity is the cause of even more doctor visits than estimated by McIntosh's model because the national survey does not include information about weight history. Someone who has developed obesity recently may not yet be experiencing the full effect of complications such as diabetes and the accompanying need for more medical care.

McIntosh hopes that his recommendation for the next survey to include weight history will lead to more accurate results on the effect of obesity on doctor visits.

"The data is clear on the fact that people are overeating and under-exercising, and that has to change," says McIntosh. "I think academics have a responsibility to get policy makers interested in these serious problems."

One solution could be economic incentives. Just as smokers have higher life insurance premiums, people who are obese could also be made to pay more for health insurance. The complication is that obesity tends to be more prevalent among people with low income, making this solution difficult to implement.

Ultimately, McIntosh says a combination of approaches is necessary, including regulation of the fast-food industry.

"While the situation is serious, it's not catastrophic," says McIntosh. "But now is the time to act before it gets out of control."
