Yelp Slaps Consumer Alerts On Business Pages For Those Who ...

Yelp announced today that it is now showing warnings to users when they have found businesses that have paid for reviews. If you are looking at such a business on the site, you?ll be greeted with a ?Consumer Alert?. This comes with a message that says:

?We have caught someone red-handed trying to buy reviews for this business. We weren?t fooled, but wanted you to know because buying reviews not only hurts consumers, but also honest businesses who play by the rules. Check out the evidence here.

Yelp will remove the alert from the business? page after 90 days, unless they find more efforts to mislead consumers. Yelp indicates that nine businesses will have the alert showing up at launch, but it will appear on any other pages for businesses Yelp finds to be in violation.

Yelp says its automated review filter is ?working around the clock? to flag these kinds of reviews.

Eric Singley, Yelp?s VP of Consumer Products and Mobile, says, ?As efforts to game the system continuously evolve, so do our methods for combating it. An independent Businessweek report confirmed the success of Yelp?s efforts to protect consumers. The article details the efforts of a Texan business owner who purchased 200 online reviews in an attempt to artificially bolster his business?s online reputation. The report found that Yelp?s review filter returned ?impressive results? catching every purchased review, while the shill reviews remained up on seven other review sites.?

?Beyond alerting consumers to attempts to purchase reviews, the next step will be to let consumers know if a business has had a large number of reviews submitted from the same Internet Protocol (IP) address, which can be a helpful indicator that they lack authenticity,? he adds. ?While the review filter already takes this type of information into account, we believe that consumers also have a right to know if this activity is going on.?

He does reassure users that most businesses on Yelp are playing by the rules.

'Invisibility' could be a key to better electronics: Visual 'cloaking' technology enables more efficient transfer of electrons

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? A new approach that allows objects to become "invisible" has now been applied to an entirely different area: letting particles "hide" from passing electrons, which could lead to more efficient thermoelectric devices and new kinds of electronics.

The concept -- developed by MIT graduate student Bolin Liao, former postdoc Mona Zebarjadi (now an assistant professor at Rutgers University), research scientist Keivan Esfarjani, and mechanical engineering professor Gang Chen -- is described in a paper in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Normally, electrons travel through a material in a way that is similar to the motion of electromagnetic waves, including light; their behavior can be described by wave equations. That led the MIT researchers to the idea of harnessing the cloaking mechanisms developed to shield objects from view -- but applying it to the movement of electrons, which is key to electronic and thermoelectric devices.

Previous work on cloaking objects from view has relied on so-called metamaterials made of artificial materials with unusual properties. The composite structures used for cloaking cause light beams to bend around an object and then meet on the other side, resuming their original path -- making the object appear invisible.

"We were inspired by this idea," says Chen, the Carl Richard Soderberg Professor of Power Engineering at MIT, who decided to study how it might apply to electrons instead of light. But in the new electron-cloaking material developed by Chen and his colleagues, the process is slightly different.

The MIT researchers modeled nanoparticles with a core of one material and a shell of another. But in this case, rather than bending around the object, the electrons do actually pass through the particles: Their paths are bent first one way, then back again, so they return to the same trajectory they began with.

In computer simulations, the concept appears to work, Liao says. Now, the team will try to build actual devices to see whether they perform as expected. "This was a first step, a theoretical proposal," Liao says. "We want to carry on further research on how to make some real devices out of this strategy."

While the initial concept was developed using particles embedded in a normal semiconductor substrate, the MIT researchers would like to see if the results can be replicated with other materials, such as two-dimensional sheets of graphene, which might offer interesting additional properties.

The MIT researchers' initial impetus was to optimize the materials used in thermoelectric devices, which produce an electrical current from a temperature gradient. Such devices require a combination of characteristics that are hard to obtain: high electrical conductivity (so the generated current can flow freely), but low thermal conductivity (to maintain a temperature gradient). But the two types of conductivity tend to coexist, so few materials offer these contradictory characteristics. The team's simulations show this electron-cloaking material could meet these requirements unusually well.

The simulations used particles a few nanometers in size, matching the wavelength of flowing electrons and improving the flow of electrons at particular energy levels by orders of magnitude compared to traditional doping strategies. This might lead to more efficient filters or sensors, the researchers say. As the components on computer chips get smaller, Chen says, "we have to come up with strategies to control electron transport," and this might be one useful approach.

The concept could also lead to a new kind of switches for electronic devices, Chen says. The switch could operate by toggling between transparent and opaque to electrons, thus turning a flow of them on and off. "We're really just at the beginning," he says. "We're not sure how far this is going to go yet, but there is some potential" for significant applications.

Xiang Zhang, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley who was not involved in this research, says "this is very exciting work" that expands the concept of cloaking to the domain of electrons. The authors, he says, "uncovered a very interesting approach that may be very useful to thermoelectric applications."

This research was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through MIT's Solid-State Solar-Thermal Energy Conversion center, a DOE Energy Frontier Research Center.

Paul Ryan Wins Debate as Joe Biden Fails to Embarrass Rival

Vice President Joe Biden had one task in his debate with Rep. Paul Ryan on Thursday night: to regain the offensive against the Republican ticket after his boss, Barack Obama, all but relinquished the stage to Mitt Romney in the first presidential debate last week.

Biden failed in that goal, for the most part, though the sometimes gaffe-prone vice president certainly did not embarrass himself.?

What the 69-year-old vice president needed to do in this debate was to use his vastly greater experience in public office?four decades? worth?to show up his 42-year-old rival?s inexperience, especially in foreign policy. But Biden at best battled Ryan to a standoff. In particular, Biden was not terribly effective in countering the anticipated Republican script, which involved a move to the moderate middle less than a month before the election. Ryan, who for much of his young career has been a hero to conservatives, managed to successfully portray himself and Romney as defenders of the middle class and responsible stewards of foreign policy who would not get America into another war.

Biden certainly tried hard to catch Ryan out. He spent much of the 90-minute debate grinning in seeming disbelief at Ryan?s answers, which covered a mind-boggling range of issues from Afghanistan and Syria to the future of Medicare and Social Security. And unlike the president, who was perceived as ?too polite? (Obama?s own words) in his first debate with Romney, Biden sought to highlight Romney?s most embarrassing moments on the stump, in particular the GOP nominee?s now-infamous comment that ?47 percent? of the country had no sense of personal responsibility for their lives. ?I?ve had it up to here with this notion,? Biden declared, saying that Republicans like Romney and Ryan needed to take responsibility for the harm their proposals would bring to the middle class and to investments in America?s future.

But Biden for the most part failed to add enough substance to his stock phrases of dismissal --?That?s a bunch of malarkey." ... ?Not a single thing he said was accurate.? ... ?This is a bunch of stuff? -- to embarrass Ryan. In particular, Ryan managed to neutralize the issue of whether Romney's proposed 20 percent cut in marginal tax rates would favor the rich, despite the lack of specifics of which deductions and loopholes the Republicans would eliminate. Biden did not effectively challenge those ambiguities in the GOP plan, even as Ryan followed the presidential nominee in dramatically shifting position on that plan toward the middle, highlighting Romney?s ?bipartisanship.?

On critical domestic issues, namely the radical Ryan budget plan that embodies a fiercely pared-down concept of government, Biden for the most part failed to make the case that a Romney-Ryan administration would undercut the middle class and further enrich America?s wealthiest citizens, despite a Congressional Budget Office study earlier this year that concluded it would effectively eliminate, by 2050, funding for education, highways, veterans' programs, foreign aid, medical and scientific research, national parks, food and water safety, and most programs for low-income families and individuals other than Medicaid, as well as partially privatize Medicare.

Biden, like Obama before him, missed opportunities to point up inconsistencies in Romney's and Ryan?s prior positions. At one point in the debate, Ryan repeated a line that has become a staple of Republican talking points: that America?s seniors would see their benefits reduced because of a $716 billion cut in Medicare. Biden failed to point out that Ryan himself had embraced those reductions in his own budget plan.??

Although the moderator, ABC?s Martha Raddatz, spent a substantial portion of the debate on foreign policy?presumably a Biden strength since he formerly served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and has been enormously influential on such issues inside the administration -- the vice president did not decisively get the better of the well-prepped Ryan, who has little experience in this area.

Raddatz began by asking about the administration?s handling of Libya and the death of U.S. Amb. Chris Stevens a month ago. Both candidates turned that into a broad discussion of the Obama administration?s handling of issues from the Middle East to Afghanistan. But there was no clear winner there either.

Biden effectively countered the Romney-Ryan criticism that Obama had been weak or indecisive in addressing the nuclear threat from Iran, but he also failed to bring up the latest news that tends to vindicate the administration?s sanctions policy: a broad-based collapse of Iran?s currency, the rial.

Did apples wiped out his reflux?

One night he slept good, and he came to the realization he had eaten an apple before going to bed, he started experimenting with apples, and found one particular brand that wiped out his reflux. It was at this stage that he wrote his first report on dealing with heartburn and acid reflux, and this report was based entirely on apple eating. Nevertheless he didn't stop there as he continued his research on things which could help acid reflux until he finally came up with a cure which is now included in his latest report. The issue is really a lot of people simply go to the doctors and get medicine instead of searching for an alternative option. It is only after the medication doesn't help them entirely that people start looking for this alternative option to help them with their issue.

Remedies for curing heartburn, acid, bile, esophageal reflux

For anyone willing to take a look, this report reveals 3 natural remedies which are safe for curing acid reflux, heartburn, bile reflux or esophageal reflux. A primary reason this program is become so effective is generally because you do not need to take medication which may have harmful side effects to deal with your issues. These kinds of natural remedies will not be told to you when you go to a doctor, mainly because natural ways are not taught in medical schools. When you visit a doctor and they provide you with a prescription and tell you to live with it, you need to try natural remedies.

Medical Doctor's Opinion

If you're like most folks you take the opinion of your doctor and regard it as incredibly knowledgeable information, the problem is doctors don't always have all the information required. If you wish to eliminate your acid reflux and start living a better life without medication this report could be the answer.

Best Buy to match some rivals' online pricing

(AP) ? Best Buy said Friday that it has authorized its store staffers to match online prices of competitors in some cases, as it beefs up service offerings as the all-important holiday season kicks off.

Best Buy and others already offer price-matching guarantees for local competitors' brick-and-mortar stores. But stores don't usually match online prices, since those tend to be lower.

But competition from online merchants and discount stores is expected to be fierce during the crucial holiday period ? when a retailer can make up to 40 percent of annual sales.

Best Buy's online price matching program isn't absolute. Spokeswoman Amy von Walter says it applies to appliances and electronics and will be given on an "if asked" basis at the discretion of Best Buy staffers on the sales floor.

The offer is valid Nov. 4 to Nov. 17 and Nov. 27 to Dec. 24.

In addition to the online price matching, Best Buy will offer free shipping to customers seeking items that are out of stock in store.

Analysts said the moves are an improvement in terms of customer service, but Best Buy still has an uphill battle to compete with online retailers.

"I think it's a positive first step, but I don't think it's enough," said Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy. He said consumers have gotten so used to the convenience of buying products on Amazon.com, it will be a difficult habit to break.

"People like Amazon's convenience, it's not just about the pricing," he said.

Shares fell 10 cents to $17.74 in afternoon trading. Its shares are near the lower end of their 52-week range of $16.25 set in mid-August and $28.53 early last December.
