Sony Closes Liverpool Games Studio

The loss-making Japanese electronics company Sony Entertainment is closing one of the UK's oldest video game studios after a review of operations.
It comes as the company plans to reduce its workforce by 10,000 by March 2013.
Sony Liverpool dated back to 1984 when it was known as Psygnosis, but it was bought by Sony in 1993.
The studio published games including Barbarian, Lemmings and Shadow of the Beast for the Amiga and Atari ST, and the Wipeout racing series for Playstation.
About 100 people will lose their jobs and the studio will be remembered in the Merseyside city as an aspirational place to work.
A statement released by the company to the games site Kotaku said: "We do regular reviews to ensure that the resources we have can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects in an increasingly competitive market place.
"It has been decided that Liverpool Studio should be closed. Liverpool Studio has been an important part of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios since the outset of PlayStation, and has contributed greatly to PlayStation over the years. Everyone connected with Liverpool Studio, past and present, can be very proud of their achievements.
"However, it was felt that by focusing our investment plans on other studios that are currently working on exciting new projects, we would be in a stronger position to offer the best possible content for our consumers."

Man locks self in plane cockpit in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. - A passenger officials described as "distraught" when he shoved past crewmembers Wednesday and locked himself in a cockpit surrendered to authorities who cut the power so he couldn't start the empty airplane.

Andrew Alessi forced his way past two American Eagle agents and ran down the jet way to the aircraft around noon, half an hour before it was scheduled to start boarding, said Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport spokesman Jim Caldwell said.

"He stayed there for several hours while police and FBI negotiated with him. He eventually came out voluntarily," Caldwell said.

Alessi bought his ticket at the airport shortly before boarding, cleared security with a piece of carry-on luggage and didn't have any weapons, he said. The flight, which was headed to Dallas/Fort Worth, was cancelled and passengers were being accommodated, he said.

No other flights were delayed.

FBI spokesman Kyle Hanrahan said Alessi, of Baton Rouge, likely will be charged with interfering with a flight crew.

"I think he was distraught. I don't know specifically why he did what he did," Hanrahan said.

A Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman said Alessi is in federal custody and will be booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison when they are done with their investigation.

No one answered the phone at a number listed for Alessi and the voicemail box was full. American Airlines spokesman Matt Miller said the airline will be reviewing their security procedures going forward.

BASEBALL: Angels keep their rally caps on to sweep Red Sox

MLB: They take the lead in the ninth inning, lose it, then score again in the 10th to defeat Red Sox.

By Howard Ulman BOSTON - Kendrys Morales led off The Angels' two-run 10th inning with a solo homer, and the Angels completed a three-game sweep of Boston by outlasting the Red Sox 14-13 on Thursday night.

The Red Sox wasted a 6-0 lead then rallied from deficits of 8-7 in the sixth and 12-11 in the ninth. But closer Alfredo Aceves struggled after Boston was one out away from victory in the ninth. Aceves (2-8) gave up five runs and six hits in one inning, and the Red Sox lost for the 11th time in 15 games.

Ernesto Frieri (2-0) got the win after giving up a tying solo homer in the ninth to Cody Ross, his 19th of the season, and an RBI single in the 10th to Dustin Pedroia, who drove in five runs.

Frieri was charged with a blown save, but secured the win when he struck out Adrian Gonzalez to end the 4-hour, 34-minute game.

With the score tied at 12, Morales jumped on an 0-1 pitch from Aceves for his 16th homer - just over the low right field fence. Erick Aybar followed with a single, knocking out Aceves. Vernon Wells hit an RBI double off Craig Breslow for the final run.

The Angels, who were swept in four games by Tampa Bay before coming to Boston, remained five games behind the Rays and closed to within 3 1-2 of Baltimore in the race for the AL's two wild-card spots.

The Red Sox took an 11-9 lead in the

eighth on RBI singles by Jacoby Ellsbury and Pedroia, but the Angels rallied in the ninth and regained the lead with Wells' eighth homer and two-out, run-scoring singles by Torii Hunter and Mark Trumbo.

Angels starter C.J. Wilson, 0-5 in his last 11 starts, struggled again.

The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first on a double by Pedroia and an RBI single by Gonzalez.

They made it 6-0 in the second on run-scoring singles by Scott Podsednik and Ellsbury and Pedroia's 11th homer, a three-run shot.

But Franklin Morales couldn't hold the lead, giving up six of the Angels' eight third-inning runs. Los Angeles had six hits, three walks and an error in the inning. Chris Iannetta and Hunter had two hits each, and every member of the Angels lineup except Trumbo got on base in the inning.

Two runs scored on bases-loaded walks to Kendrys Morales and Wells. Seven consecutive batters reached base after two were out.

Wilson then settled down and retired eight straight batters before Pedroia reached on an error by third baseman Alberto Callaspo in the fifth and scored on a single by Ross.

Boston went ahead 9-8 with two runs in the sixth on Mike Aviles' 12th homer and consecutive doubles by Pedro Ciriaco and Ellsbury. But Los Angeles tied it in the seventh on Trout's RBI single.

Notes

The last Angels pitcher to go 11 starts without a win was Jim Abbott, whose streak reached 13 games from May 7 to Aug, 10, 1996. ... USA: Hall Spars and Rigging Supplies Blades for Cobscook Bay Tidal Energy Project

USA: Hall Spars and Rigging Supplies Blades for Cobscook Bay Tidal Energy Project

World class composite manufacturing firm Hall Spars and Rigging, known in the yachting industry as a leading provider of spars, rigging and complex composite components for the most competitive and successful yachts in the world, is manufacturing the turbine components for the United States? first commercial, grid-connected tidal energy project. Maine based Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) is the project?s developer, owner and operator. ORPC also developed the propietary technology used.

Key to ORPC?s TidGen? turbine generator unit (TGU) design are the all-composite Advanced Design Cross Flow turbines which Hall Spars & Rigging is manufacturing. The TGU is the core component or ?engine? for ORPC?s proprietary hydrokinetic device design which captures the energy of moving water without using dams or other barriers. The first TGU featuring four Hall Spars-made turbines was installed at ORPC?s permitted project site in Cobscook Bay, Maine last week.

?We couldn?t have asked for a more innovative and professional turbine manufacturing partner than Hall Spars,? said ORPC?s President & CEO Chris Sauer. ?We have no doubt that these turbines will stand up to the challenges of long term deployment in the Bay of Fundy region.?

Hall Spars considers the rigors of the marine environment on a daily basis when designing and manufacturing spars and rigging for the top superyachts in the world. Drawing from that expertise, Hall Spars built ORPC?s turbines with carbon fiber reinforced composites, an ideal material for the loads the turbines will encounter and the marine environment in which they will operate.

?Hall Spars? Chief Operating Officer Tom Derecktor said ?I could not be more proud of the successful deployment of ORPC?s turbines built by Hall Spars. ORPC has been incredible to work with and what they have achieved in Maine is truly visionary. We look forward to future projects with ORPC.?

Recent projects at Hall Spars? three manufacturing locations in the USA, Netherlands and New Zealand, include the yachts Wally 50m Better Place, Reichel-Pugh 85 My Song, Hoek H-Class Firefly, Baltic 72 Stig, Alia 82 Aiyana, and the Ker 50 Varuna, as well as non-marine composite projects for the aerospace and defense industries. Hall Spars & Rigging has been in business for over 30 years. There is no question that company owners and avid sailors Eric Hall, Ben Hall, and Phil Garland, founded the company based on that love of sailing, and combined it with a driven pursuit of the latest technology.

With the recent addition of Chief Operating Officer, Tom Derecktor (also a sailor and second generation boat builder), in 2011, the Hall Spars & Rigging business model has expanded. Tom has spearheaded the Hall Spars initiative to be a leader in commercial composite projects.

SEAL who wrote book on bin Laden raid revealed

White House Situation Room, May 1, 2011 (Pete Souza/White House)

The Navy SEAL who used a pseudonym to write an upcoming book on the raid that killed Osama bin Laden has been revealed.

Penguin Books?which is publishing "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama bin Laden" on Sept. 11 on its Dutton imprint?said the author used the pen name Mark Owen and changed the names of his fellow SEALs for security reasons.

But Fox News published Owen's real name, saying he is a 36-year-old Alaskan and former member of the so-called Team 6 that killed bin Laden in a May 2011 assault on the al-Qaida chief's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. (The Associated Press also published his name; other news outlets, including CNN, chose not to do so.)

"Owen was one of the first men through the door on the third floor of the terrorist leader's hideout," Penguin said in a press release on Wednesday, "and was present at his death":

The blow-by-blow narrative of the assault, beginning with the helicopter crash that could have ended Owen's life straight through to the radio call confirming Bin Laden's death, is an essential piece of modern history.

Owen said the reason he wanted to write the book?co-authored with Kevin Maurer?was to "set the record straight about one of the most important missions in U.S. military history."

Pentagon officials, though, say they have not vetted the account. Penguin said the publisher consulted with a former special operations attorney on its release.

(Penguin)

"He vetted it for tactical, technical and procedural information as well as information that could be considered classified by compilation and found it to be without risk to national security," Christine Ball, a spokeswoman for Dutton, told The Associated Press.

"I haven't read the book and am unaware that anyone in the department has reviewed it," Pentagon press secretary George Little said Thursday.

Defense Department spokesman Lt. Col. James Gregory said that if the book reveals classified information about the raid, the Pentagon would turn the case over to the Department of Justice.

Since the bin Laden raid, "there has been a consistent and effective effort to protect the identity of those that participated in the raid," then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in 2011. "I think that that has to continue."

"No Easy Day" is not the first account of the bin Laden raid to spark controversy.

Last August, the New Yorker published "Getting Bin Laden," a gripping, 8,500-word play-by-play of the killing written by freelancer Nicholas Schmidle.

It was, perhaps, too gripping. Schmidle's sourcing came under fire from several critics who said that he and the New Yorker failed to disclose that Schmidle never spoke with the SEALs directly.

[Related: The New Yorker's account of raid is amazing?perhaps too amazing]

And the White House was criticized by lawmakers for its collaboration with the producers of "Zero Dark Thirty"?Academy Award-winning director Kathryn Bigelow's upcoming film on the bin Laden raid?over their possible access to classified material. Bigelow and the White House disputed the claims; the CIA said the agency's involvement with the filmmakers was not unusual and that no intelligence was compromised.

The film, originally scheduled to open before the presidential election, was pushed back to Dec. 19 after Republicans complained it might affect voters.

President Floyd responds to delays in financial aid distribution

President Elson S. Floyd says Zzusis is to blame for the financial aid crisis.

?The simple reason that the lines are there this year is because of the implementation of the new system,? he said in a meeting with The Daily Evergreen yesterday.

WSU students have received roughly $61 million in financial aid so far, but they're still awaiting nearly $90 million more.

In the mean time, the university offers short-term loans up to $2,000 apiece for students eligible for financial aid.

The deadline for late tuition payments has been pushed back to Oct. 1.

The state appropriation WSU received to create and implement Zzusis required that the system be running by June 30. The previous operating system crashed, Floyd said, forcing the university to rush to install the software.

?The reality is we have to get it right,? he said. ?If we don?t award financial aid in the way it was intended, then that could result in audit findings which would then eliminate our ability as an institution to receive federal grants and contracts as well as financial aid.?

Floyd could not, however, explain the exact problems with Zzusis.

The Daily Evergreen also asked why the lines are much longer than they were last year, despite claims that the same amount of money has been issued this year. Floyd could not explain that, either.

The university has tried to accommodate those waiting for hours in line, Floyd said. Dean of Students Melynda Huskey handed out Ferdinand?s Grabbers to members of the line.

?So what we?ve tried to do is make the waiting-in-line experience as pleasant as we can while responding to those issues,? Floyd said.

Despite the comfort of ice cream, thousands of students are still waiting for their financial aid. Floyd anticipates every student will have their aid in the next 14 days.
