IFA 2012 Day 1 wrap-up

Hello sailor!

Guten tag! We're fresh off the floor for the first official day of IFA 2102 and wanted to take a few minutes to round all the news up in one easy-to-read post in case you missed any of it. IFA is an exciting show for Android fans everywhere, as it shows us all what's in store for the second part of the year. What started as a consumer electronics show for the European market has turned into a global showcase of new technology for all of the world to see.

As a follow up to their lavish presentation from Wednesday, Sony got a little more intimate and talked at length about their design principles and strategy. We were there, and Alex has a great synopsis of the meeting -- be sure to have a look. Also, don't miss seeing what a GINORMOUS Sony Windows 8 tablet looks like when put next to something a bit more normal-sized.

We also heard a bit about the British release of Sony's new gear from Three UK and Carphone Warehouse. Don't forget us on this side of the pond, Sir Howard!

Samsung still had a lot to say about the new Galaxy Note 2, with a booth full of accessories and news about an all-new SDK to take advantage of the S-Pen. Moleskine is taking advantage of the SDK's new features and was happy to give us a demo. Looks outstanding!

Of course, Samsung's Galaxy Camera was again the star of the show. It's new and trendy, and we expect Samsung to want to show it off. Which they did, in a handful of colors. We got to go hands-on with the camera UI, and even have a long, hard look at sample images from the 16MP sensor. Not too shabby.

Samsung wasn't finished though, as they showed off a Galaxy S III (Galaxy S3), in black, with LTE, running Jelly Bean. That should get some excitement going.

Some other companies weren't about to let Sony and Samsung have all the fun though, and we saw an up-close and personal look at the HTC Desire X, got some hands-on time with Huawei's new Emotion UI, and even got to plaster our fingerprints all over a shiny white LG Optimus L9. And this was just day one.

Stay tuned to AC for everything you ever wanted to know about IFA 2102 and all the news from the event as we bring it to you like nobody else can. We'll be back with more tomorrow!

British teen Robson posts another upset at US Open

NEW YORK (AP) ? British teen Laura Robson faces a former Grand Slam champion in her next match at the U.S. Open, which shouldn't feel the least bit intimidating.

Not after she beat four-time major winner Kim Clijsters and 2011 French Open champ Li Na in three days. Next up is Sam Stosur, the defending champion at Flushing Meadows.

"She's obviously full of confidence and had two very, very good wins," Stosur said.

The 18-year-old Robson knocked out Li 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2 on Friday. Ranked 89th, Robson had never been past the second round of a major tournament or defeated a top-10 opponent before this year's U.S. Open. Now she's done both after eliminating the ninth-seeded Li.

Robson put her hands to her head in shocked joy after the Chinese star returned her serve long on the final point.

She showed poise after failing to close out the match in the second-set tiebreaker, then overcoming two incorrect calls in the third set where she had to replay points she would've won if the initial ruling had been right.

With a break point on Li's serve at 2-2 in the final set, Robson's return clipped the baseline and Li hit the ball wide. But the line judge called Robson's shot out and, after a review overturned it, Robson lost the replayed point. Li won the next point as well to earn game point. But with the Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd roaring its support, Robson rallied back to get the break.

On Wednesday, Robson ended Clijsters' career, winning both sets in tiebreakers in the second round against the 23rd-seeded Belgian. Robson's career may now be really getting started.

She became the next great British hope when she captured the 2008 Wimbledon girls title at age 14. Four years later, she seems to be reaching that potential, the youngest woman ranked in the top 100.

Robson is the first British woman to make the fourth round at a Grand Slam event since Sam Smith at 1998 Wimbledon.

Stosur was pushed for the first time in this year's Open by American Varvara Lepchenko, but dominated the second set after winning the first in a tiebreaker. The seventh-seeded Stosur, who won 7-6 (5), 6-2, had dropped just five games through her first two matches.

It was still a successful Open for the 31st-seeded Lepchenko. After reaching at least the third round in three straight Grand Slam events, she'll likely climb into the top 30 in the rankings.

Friday night could be the farewell for 2003 champion Andy Roddick. A day earlier, he announced this would be the final tournament of his career.

The American is set to face Bernard Tomic in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

In earlier men's action, fourth-seeded David Ferrer won the first two sets in 62 minutes, then needed 65 minutes to clinch the third set in a tiebreaker that went 26 points. The Spaniard beat Igor Sijsling 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (12) in the second round.

NCAA champ Steve Johnson, who had played in just one Grand Slam match before this year's Open, reached the third round with a four-set win over 145th-ranked Ernests Gulbis.

The 22-year-old Johnson, ranked 245th, went undefeated this season for Southern Cal to win his second straight NCAA title and earn a wild card into the Open.

Advance excerpts of Romney's convention speech

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - The following is a selection of advance excerpts of Mitt Romney's speech on Thursday to the Republican National Convention accepting his party's nomination to face President Barack Obama in the November 6 election:

* Four years ago, I know that many Americans felt a fresh excitement about the possibilities of a new president. ... I wish President Obama had succeeded because I want America to succeed. But his promises gave way to disappointment and division. This isn't something we have to accept. Now is the moment when we can do something. With your help we will do something. ... Americans have a choice. A decision.

* To make that choice, you need to know more about me and about where I will lead our country. ... Unconditional love is a gift that Ann and I have tried to pass on to our sons and now to our grandchildren.

* My mom and dad were true partners, a life lesson that shaped me by everyday example. When my mom ran for the Senate, my dad was there for her every step of the way. I can still hear her saying in her beautiful voice, "Why should women have any less say than men, about the great decisions facing our nation?" ... As governor of Massachusetts, I chose a woman lieutenant governor, a woman chief of staff, half of my cabinet and senior officials were women.

* Like a lot of families in a new place with no family, we found kinship with a wide circle of friends through our church. ... The strength and power and goodness of America has always been based on the strength and power and goodness of our communities, our families, our faiths.

* When I was 37, I helped start a small company. My partners and I had been working for a company that was in the business of helping other businesses. ... That business we started with 10 people has now grown into a great American success story.

* Hope and Change had a powerful appeal (on Election Day in 2008). But tonight I'd ask a simple question: If you felt that excitement when you voted for Barack Obama, shouldn't you feel that way now that he's President Obama? You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had, was the day you voted for him.

* Today the time has come for us to put the disappointments of the last four years behind us. ... Now is the time to restore the Promise of America. Many Americans have given up on this president but they haven't ever thought about giving up.

* What is needed in our country today is not complicated or profound. It doesn't take a special government commission to tell us what America needs. What America needs is jobs. Lots of jobs.

* To the majority of Americans who now believe that the future will not be better than the past, I can guarantee you this: if Barack Obama is re-elected, you will be right. I am running for president to help create a better future.

* I have a plan to create 12 million new jobs. It has 5 steps. ... By 2020, North America will be energy independent by taking full advantage of our oil and coal and gas and nuclear and renewables. ... We will give our fellow citizens the skills they need for the jobs of today and the careers of tomorrow. ... We will make trade work for America by forging new trade agreements. And when nations cheat in trade, there will be unmistakable consequences. ... We will cut the deficit and put America on track to a balanced budget. ... We will champion SMALL businesses.

* President Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet. MY promise...is to help you and your family.

* We will honor America's democratic ideals because a free world is a more peaceful world.

* The America we all know has been a story of the many becoming one, uniting to preserve liberty, uniting to build the greatest economy in the world, uniting to save the world from unspeakable darkness. ... That America, that united America, will preserve a military that is so strong, no nation would ever dare to test it.

* If I am elected President of these United States, I will work with all my energy and soul to restore that America, to lift our eyes to a better future.

Federal court blocks Texas voter ID law

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A federal court on Thursday blocked a Texas law that would require voters to show photo identification before casting ballots, saying the measure would likely curtail the ability of minorities to vote in the November 6 presidential election.

Evidence showed the law did the most harm to African Americans and Hispanics, who are more likely to live in poverty, Circuit Judge David Tatel wrote for a three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court in Washington.

Those without the underlying documents to obtain ID would have to purchase them, discouraging poor voters, he wrote. During the July trial, lawyers from the U.S. Department of Justice equated that purchase to an illegal poll tax.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, a Republican, said he would appeal the decision directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Today's decision is wrong on the law and improperly prevents Texas from implementing the same type of ballot integrity safeguards that are employed by Georgia and Indiana, and were upheld by the Supreme Court," he said.

Texas had the legal burden to prove its requirement did not harm minority voters. Judge Tatel's opinion called all the state's evidence "unpersuasive, invalid, or both."

The requirement was adopted in 2011 by the Republican-dominated Texas legislature. Voters would have had to present one of six forms of photo ID before casting their ballots.

1965 ACT AT STAKE

Supporters said the requirement would discourage fraud at the polls, but opponents called it a guise to suppress minority voters more likely to support Democratic candidates.

"Chalk up another victory for fraud," Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, said in a statement.

But Elise Boddie, director of litigation for the NAACP civil rights group, said: "The whole point of our democracy is to make sure that voters have the opportunity to vote, and that's what today's ruling does."

In March, the Obama administration blocked the requirement using the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a law designed to protect the voting rights of minorities, primarily blacks in Southern states.

Texas sued the U.S. government, arguing that it would be easy for a person without an ID to obtain one before the November 6 election. Texas lawyers said most voters already had IDs, and those who did not could get IDs for free if they had the underlying documents.

Since the 2010 election, in which Republicans gained control of many state and local governments, 11 U.S. states have passed voter ID laws, among other election rule changes.

The Obama administration has used the Voting Rights Act to counter the new wave of Republican measures that include voter ID requirements, redistricting maps and new ballot formats. Since the 2010 election, there have been more lawsuits under the Voting Rights Act than in the previous 45 years combined.

SUPREME COURT REVIEW

The challenges are building toward a possible U.S. Supreme Court review of the part of the Voting Rights Act that allows the federal government to block rule changes in certain states.

Two challenges reached the Supreme Court on July 20. If the court agrees to hear those cases during the term starting in October, it will weigh whether the key provision of the civil rights-era law is still necessary.

Any review of the Texas decision would focus only on the state's requirement itself and not the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act.

Earlier this week, a different panel of the same Washington federal court blocked Texas' redistricting maps under the Voting Rights Act, saying they discriminated against blacks and Hispanics. Texas will likely use interim maps drawn up by a San Antonio federal court for the November elections.

Texas State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, head of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, said the rulings on redistricting and voter ID were proof that the entire Voting Rights Act was still necessary.

"In the span of three days, we have had Texas' dirty laundry aired on a national stage. A history that we are not very proud of. A history that we have all claimed that we have overcome, and we have been told, in the year 2012, no longer exists," Fischer told Reuters.

The case is Texas v. Holder, U.S. District Court, District of Columbia, No. 12-cr-00128.

Health and Fitness ? Weight Loss Secrets ? 16255th Edition | Health ...

Being active makes a person healthy and strong. It is not just for people who have a weight problem but for everyone who likes to stay fit.

There is a lot a person can do such jog or walk every morning, play basketball or any other sport with friends but if a person wants to have muscles and look lean, then one can sign up and workout in a gym.

People workout for 3 reasons;

The first is that the person is overweight and the only way to lose those extra pounds will be to reduce ones calorie intake and at the same time workout in the gym.

The second is that the person is underweight and the only way to add extra pounds is to have more calories in ones diet and workout.

The third is just for fun and to keep that person in shape.

The best exercise plan should have cardiovascular and weight training exercises. This helps burn calories and increase the muscle to fat ratio that will increase ones metabolism and gain or lose weight.

Just like taking any medicine, one should first consult the doctor before undergoing any form of exercise.

Here are some benefits of exercising;

1. It is the easiest way to maintain and improve ones health from a variety of diseases and premature death.

2. Studies have shown that it makes a person feels happier and increases ones self esteem preventing one from falling into depression or anxiety.

3. An active lifestyle makes a person live longer than a person who doesn?t.

Working out for someone who has not done it before should be done gradually. Endurance will not be built in a day and doing it repeatedly will surely be beneficial to the person.

It is advisable to workout regularly with a reasonable diet.

A person can consult with a dietitian or a health professional to really help plan a good diet program. It starts by evaluating the lifestyle and the health of the patient before any program can be made.

Afterwards, this is thoroughly discussed and recommended to the person which usually consists of an eating plan and an exercise program that does not require the use of supplements or one to purchase any expensive fitness equipment.

A good diet should have food from all the food groups.

This is made up by 2 things. The first is carbohydrates. The food that a person consumes should have vitamins, minerals and fiber. A lot of this can come from oats, rice, potatoes and cereals. The best still come from vegetables and fruits since these have phytochemicals, enzymes and micronutrients that are essential for a healthy diet.

The second is fat which can come from mono and poly saturated food sources rather than animal fats. Since fat contains more than double the number of calories in food, this should be taken in small quantities to gain or lose weight.

Another way to stay healthy is to give up some vices. Most people smoke and drink. Smoking has been proven to cause lung cancer and other diseases as well complications for women giving birth. Excessive drinking has also shown to do the same.

For people who don?t smoke, it is best to stay away from people who do since studies have shown that nonsmokers are also at risk of developing cancer due to secondary smoke inhalation.
