Tweet This Termites have through their infestations of the home and hearth troubled mankind ever since they have built their dwellings. No place is ever safe from a termite infestation. Such deadly warriors who can infiltrate the most foolproof of securities and devastate entire buildings both from the outside and the inside need to be taken care of as soon as their presence is detected. First and foremost, when beginning construction one must have some professional help by their side that can help eliminate the risk of a termite infestation completely.

Although many, many ways have been tried and tested over time which could eliminate any possibility of a termite infestation once the building is built, it is virtually an impossible occurrence. What with the wood work that is done only after the building is completed and other additions are made in every place from time to time which cannot allow a building to be disinfected all of the time.

Termite protection systems have come in vogue quite recently. Not many years back there used to be very harsh and poisonous chemicals which were sprayed on or applied to all the items in sight. These harmful chemicals would clean up most of the termites but they put the people and the pets that inhabited that building at a great risk. There were times when getting a termite infestation cleaned up would entail a thorough ripping up of the floor boards and the roof too.

A long and tedious procedure which would take days at end and the people would have to be kept out of the place after the whole thing had been done. Things aren't that complicated any longer. The usage of modern, scientific termite protection systems means a professionally trained exterminator who can help you get rid of all the termites that bug you by bugging your house.

British health chief dubbed "minister for magic''

(AP) ? He supports homeopathy, a practice that many experts liken to snake oil. He opposes late-term abortion, falling afoul of this mostly pro-choice nation. During the London Olympics, he offended many Britons with a jab at the cherished National Health Service.

This is Jeremy Hunt ? Britain's new health minister. He's only been in his job since Tuesday, but already some experts fret that his controversial views and general knack for inviting scandal could sow confusion in an already fragile health system.

Hunt's personal beliefs shouldn't influence policy because his job will mostly be to implement reforms that have already been agreed. Still, British media slammed Hunt's appointment, mainly basing their criticism on his support of homeopathy. The Telegraph newspaper headline read: "Jeremy Hunt as Health Secretary: Are you kidding?" The magazine New Scientist labeled him "the new minister for magic."

And medical views aside, the 45-year-old Conservative ally of Prime Minister David Cameron has already developed an image as a magnet for controversy ? notably during his just-completed stint as minister for media, culture and sport.

In that job, he was criticized for maintaining close ties to Rupert Murdoch even as a phone hacking scandal engulfed the media tycoon. Opposition lawmakers said Hunt, whose office had jurisdiction over Murdoch's ambitions to take over a TV station, should face a government inquiry. Hunt's adviser Adam Smith resigned after the contacts between Murdoch's News Corp. and the minister's office were disclosed.

Some had expected Hunt to be demoted after the scandal. But in his first major Cabinet shakeup, Cameron gave Hunt another high-profile job instead.

In announcing the Cabinet changes, Cameron said ministers would be expected to focus on implementing policies that have already been approved in Parliament, meaning that Hunt will likely be on a short leash.

Hunt allies defended the selection.

"Jeremy Hunt is perfectly well-qualified to do the job," said Stephen Dorrell, a Conservative Party member of Parliament and chair of Parliament's Health Select Committee. "He understands the concerns people have, he's an excellent communicator and he will focus on making sure the government delivers on its objectives."

Dorrell, who was health secretary between 1995 and 1997, said it was unfair to criticize Hunt for signing a Parliamentary motion five years ago in support of homeopathy. "I think if you dig far back enough into everybody's history, you can always find something like that," he said, rejecting fears that government policy on homeopathy would change.

Hunt joined Parliament in 2005 after setting up an educational publishing company and a charity helping AIDS orphans in Africa. He inherits the health portfolio at a time of radical restructuring in the National Health Service. His predecessor introduced a new health bill opposed by every major medical group but was ultimately approved by Parliament. The changes will axe about 20,000 jobs while transferring greater powers to clinics.

Hunt's most recent gaffe was questioning whether the country's health service, the NHS, deserved to get a tribute in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Cameron reportedly overruled him.

In 2005, Hunt co-authored a book that concluded that the NHS was no longer relevant and it should no longer be run by the government.

Scientists are more worried about his backing for homeopathy.

"This is a jump back into the last century," said Edzard Ernst, an emeritus professor at Exeter University. "We need someone who believes in science and evidence for a health secretary, and that is not compatible with believing in homeopathy.

"This is a bad omen for things to come."

Many scientists view homeopathy as modern day quack medicine. It relies on highly diluted drugs made from natural ingredients. The U.S. government has stopped paying for studies of homeopathic treatments, saying there's little evidence any of them work. A government website notes homeopathy is based on concepts that are inconsistent with the fundamentals of chemistry and physics.

In 2007, Hunt signed a motion welcoming the "positive contribution made to the health of the nation" by homeopathy and called for the government to actively support it. In response to a constituent who pointed out that homeopathy doesn't work, Hunt replied it should be available because thousands of people use it and the government insists health care should be "patient-led."

Sir Paul Nurse, president of the Royal Society, Britain's leading independent scientific academy, said he was hopeful Hunt might change his mind about homeopathy. "It could be that in his new position he will read more thoroughly," he said. "If we are to make the case for evidence-based medicine, then there shouldn't be any homeopathy."

A 2010 report from a House of Commons science committee recommended the government stop paying for homeopathy. But the department of health leaves decisions on treatments to hospitals, meaning the government continues to pay for some homeopathic remedies. Homeopathic treatments account for less than one percent of Britain's drug costs.

Experts say that homeopathic remedies are mostly prescribed for people with chronic problems like pain or fatigue, where the treatments may seem to work because of the placebo effect. Practitioners who use alternative remedies often spend more time listening to patients, which can help them feel better.

The questionable treatments are backed by celebrities including Paul McCartney, David Beckham and Jude Law. In 2005, Prince Charles commissioned a report on homeopathy which said treating patients with homeopathy could cut the nation's drugs bill in half. Experts said that would put patients' lives in danger.

Women's groups are concerned about Hunt's track record on abortion. In 2008, Hunt voted for the limit to be halved to 12 weeks from the current 24. The motion was thrown out, but experts say Hunt's position was troubling.

"About 80 percent of the country is pro-choice but unfortunately Jeremy Hunt is not one of those people," Kate Smurthwaite, vice-chair of Abortion Rights, an advocacy group. "We hold out hope he's going to take the job seriously and put his personal views aside to get on with the job, but to have him as health minister is incredibly worrying."

Premier Farnell, Sony team up to build Raspberry PI units in the UK

One of the biggest holdups to owning a Raspberry Pi was its stuttering availability, so much so that it even prompted a few copycat boards. Creator Eben Upton and equipment makers Premier Farnell might have found the solution, teaming up with Sony to produce an initial run of 300,000 of the educational computers at the company's UK Technology Center, in Pencoed, near Bridgend in Wales. Upton hopes to keep the cost at $25 and $35 for two boards, thanks to employing Sony's "lean manufacturing techniques," and the Japanese company has already spent £50,000 ($80,000) on new package-on-package assembly equipment -- ensuring that we'll all be able to get our hands on one soon enough.

NASA Captures Epic Eruption From Surface of Sun [PICS]

NASA Captures Epic CME Eruption

From here on Earth, the Sun looks remarkably consistent, continuously bathing our planet in light and heat without much change from year to year, let alone day to day. In reality, it's anything but calm, as this incredible NASA photo of a coronal mass ejection (CME) shows.

A CME is a huge burst of stellar material and magnetic fields from the surface of the sun -- essentially what happens when the sun "burps." They're often associated with solar flares, but they can happen separately, too.

This particular CME occurred on Aug. 31, 2012 at 4:36 p.m Eastern Time. At its fastest, the burst shot out into space at more than 900 miles per second. Although this particular CME didn't travel directly toward Earth (God help us if it did -- a CME can be very destructive to things in orbit, like satellites), it did affect Earth's magnetosphere, creating an aurora that was visible last night, Sept. 3.

NASA captured these spectacular images of the CME as well as the aurora, posting high-res versions on the Goddard Space Flight Center's Flickr feed. Let us know what you think of the pics in the comments.

Tracking fish through a coral reef seascape

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

Ocean scientists have long known that juvenile coral reef fishes use coastal seagrass and mangrove habitats as nurseries, later moving as adults onto coral reefs. But the fishes' movements, and the connections between different tropical habitats, are much more complex than previously realized, according to a study published September 3 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The findings have important implications for management and protection of coral reefs and other marine environments.

A number of studies have demonstrated a strong relationship between the presence of coastal wetlands and offshore fish abundance and fisheries yield, but it has proved difficult to develop quantitative assessment of habitat use by fish or their movement among different habitats. "The rationale for this study,"says Simon Thorrold, a biologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), "was to determine the relative importance of different nursery habitats to reef fishes that spend their adult lives on coral reefs but may spend at least part of their juvenile residency elsewhere."

The study also advances understanding of the functional connectivity of coral reef fish in a tropical seascape, says WHOI biologist and study lead author Kelton McMahon. "Traditional methods of assessing nursery habitats ? visual surveys of abundance and size of fish in different locations ? provide important but indirect evidence of connectivity among essential habitats. We developed a quantitative method that identifies essential nursery habitat, and allows reconstruction of migration within the seascape."

The method analyzes isotopic signatures recorded in fish tissue. These signatures, unique to each environment in which a fish lives and feeds, are laid down in its otoliths, or ear bones, creating a record similar to that of tree rings.

"Otoliths are constantly and permanently recording the conditions a fish is experiencing at any time," explains Thorrold. What a fish eats can be traced back to a particular food web, which makes it possible to track where a fish went throughout its life.

Thorrold, McMahon, and Michael Berument of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia first analyzed food webs in five specific habitats in the Red Sea off the northern coast of Saudi Arabia: coastal wetlands, coastal reefs near the shoreline, reefs on the continental shelf less than 60 meters deep, patch reefs around a continental offshore island, and oceanic reefs surrounded by deep open water. They used those data to create an isoscape, or map of the unique isotope signature of each location.

They then collected adult Ehrenberg's snapper (Lutjanus ehrenbergii), a commercially important snapper widespread throughout tropical and subtropical waters. With gas chromatography, the researchers measured compounds in otoliths of individual fish, working their way back to layers created when each was a juvenile. They matched each fish's signature to one on the isoscape, identifying with a high degree of accuracy the habitat an individual fish occupied as a juvenile.

This made it possible to look at movement of juvenile fish within the seascape at a level never before possible, revealing a few surprises. "We found that a number of juveniles had settled directly onto reefs, despite the fact that in several years of regular work in this area, we'd never visually observed them there," says Thorrold. "If you just observed distribution of juveniles, you would say the only important nursery habitat is coastal wetlands. But that's not true. Some fish settle right on the reefs, and the continental island proved to be very important habitat as well."

In other words, coastal wetlands are important juvenile nursery habitat for snapper in the Red Sea, but snapper are not obligated to use them, as was previously thought. Instead, the fish showed surprising plasticity, using a wide variety of habitats. "Our results showed remarkable complexity in the use of different habitats and movement patterns among them," McMahon says. Fish movements, the study makes clear, are more complex than a linear model of coastal fish moving out onto reefs.

The analysis also showed that seascape configuration plays an important and perhaps underappreciated role in determining the connectivity among essential habitats. "We found that coral reef fish made remarkable long-distance migrations from coastal wetlands across deep open water ? long considered a hard migration barrier for coral reef fish ? to offshore reefs," McMahon says. "That was, for me, the most surprising finding. Migration capability was far greater than we originally appreciated. It underscores the potential of significant connectivity within a large and complex tropical seascape." These results are particularly timely, given the increasing use of spatial management approaches in coral reef ecosystems, including networked marine protected areas.

The implication is that it isn't enough to protect adult habitat on coral reefs. Habitats that supply those reefs and the migration corridors that connect them also need protection. "As human activity continues to degrade and fragment tropical seascape habitats, quantitative understanding of the connectivity among them becomes increasingly important," says McMahon.

"Protecting the reef protects the adult fishes, but not an important component of their life history, as juveniles," says Thorrold. "It won't work to protect the reef but, for example, allow a hotel to be built on the seagrass beds and mangroves."

The study's quantitative method also provides a way to estimate ecosystem services that specific habitats provide to fisheries yields within a seascape, allowing for a more accurate accounting of these services and potentially providing a way to determine suitable value for mitigation and remediation purposes.

"We haven't known the value of those habitats to the reefs themselves when considering development," says Thorrold. "This technique allows us to quantify the importance of different habitats, and that makes it possible to come up with reasonable biological valuations for them. It hasn't been done yet, but is an important implication of the work going forward."

An important next step, the researchers say, is to analyze other globally important coral reef or tropical seascapes to see how general these patterns are.

China irritated with Hillary Clinton

Beijing --

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton flew into a storm of criticism in Beijing on Tuesday in the midst of a six-nation tour perceived by China as aimed at curbing its influence in Asia.

"Many Chinese people dislike Hillary Clinton," the often-acerbic Communist Party-controlled Global Times newspaper stated in an editorial. "She has brought new and extremely profound mutual distrust between the mainstream societies of the two countries."

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei was more polite, saying at a briefing in advance of Clinton's arrival late Tuesday, "We hope the U.S. side will keep its commitment and make efforts that help, rather than harm, regional peace and stability."

High on the agenda in Beijing are myriad disputes between China and neighbors - Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei and Malaysia - over uninhabited islets and fishing waters.

Clinton has proposed a code of conduct to be used as a mechanism to resolve such disputes through the Association of South East Asian Nations. Such a code would "literally calm the waters," Clinton said in Jakarta, Indonesia, ahead of her flight to China.

Beijing has rejected what it calls U.S. meddling in the conflicts, apparently believing it has more clout asserting its claims bilaterally with its neighbors.

"We feel there are too many different countries ganging up on us. The U.S. is playing the role of the aggressor here. It is a sign of their insecurity in the global arena," said Xu Guangyu, a retired military officer and analyst for the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association in Beijing.

China's irritation with Clinton has been building for months. The Chinese are still simmering over remarks she made over the summer during a tour of Africa in which, without mentioning China by name, she urged nations on the continent to deal only with pro-democracy foreign powers.

Clinton comes to Beijing in the middle of an 11-day tour designed to show the flag in a region where China's influence - and money - increasingly hold sway. It began with an improbable visit to the tiny Cook Islands (population 13,000) and includes stops in Indonesia, East Timor, Brunei and the Russian Far East.
