Niger: Only 1 major Libyan figure in country (AP)

NIAMEY, Niger ? A senior member of Moammar Gadhafi's inner circle slipped into Niger along with three carloads of collaborators, an official said Tuesday, but the toppled Libyan leader was not among them nor were any members of his immediate family.

Massoudou Hassoumi, a spokesman for the president of this landlocked African nation which shares a border with Libya, said that Gadhafi's security chief had crossed the desert accompanied by a major Tuareg rebel.

The government of Niger dispatched a military convoy to escort Mansour Dao, the former commander of Libya's Revolutionary Guards who is a cousin of Gadhafi as well as a member of his inner circle, to the capital, Niamey.

Dao is the only senior Libyan figure to have crossed into Niger, said Hassoumi, who denied reports that Gadhafi or any member of his immediate family was in the convoy.

"There were three cars that crossed with one senior official from Gadhafi's regime, whom we have placed under surveillance," said Hassoumi, the chief of staff of President Mahamadou Issoufou. "They arrived in Niamey yesterday night. They slept in Niamey. The official is Mansour Dao. He asked for refuge ... we sent a military convoy to get him."

The group of nine people also included several pro-Gadhafi businessmen, as well as Agaly ag Alambo, a Tuareg rebel leader from Niger who led a failed uprising in the country's north before crossing into Libya, where he was believed to be fighting for Gadhafi.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said senior members of the Gadhafi regime were in the convoy that reached Niger.

"But we do not believe that Gadhafi was among them," she told reporters. "We don't have any evidence that Gadhafi is anywhere but in Libya at the moment."

Nuland said the United States has urged Niger to detain any individuals who may be subject to prosecution in Libya, as well as to confiscate their weapons and impound any state property, such as money or jewels, that were illegally taken out of the country.

Since Tripoli's fall last month to Libyan rebels, there has been a movement of Gadhafi loyalists across the porous desert border that separates Libya from Niger. They include Tuareg fighters who are nationals of Niger and next-door neighbor Mali who fought on Gadhafi's behalf in the recent civil war.

There has been intense speculation regarding the whereabouts of Gadhafi's inner circle and last week, Algeria, which like NIger shares a border with Libya ? confirmed that the ousted leader's wife, his daughter, two of his sons, and several grandchildren had crossed onto Algerian soil.

Hassoumi spoke of "waves" of returnees crossing over from Libya that preceded the arrival Monday of Gadhafi's security chief, but he said they were mostly Tauregs and not Libyan soldiers or civilians.

Customs official Harouna Ide told the AP that in addition to the convoy with Dao, other convoys from Libya were south of Agadez in central Niger.

Hassoumi said that Dao was taken to a villa in Niamey which is under 24-hour surveillance. His account concurs with what leaders of the Tuareg ethnic group told The Associated Press, as well as a Western diplomat who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

All of them debunked earlier media reports that Gadhafi and his immediate family may have been in the entourage, as well as initial figures stating that the convoy consisted of as many as 200 military vehicles from Libya.

Assarid Ag Imbarcaouane, a Tuareg elder from neighboring Mali who is one of the vice presidents of its parliament, said there were no more than a few dozen cars.

"As far as the information I have received, the Guide is not in the convoy," he said, referring to Gadhafi. "Rather, it's people in Gadhafi's entourage and Agaly Alambo."

Gadhafi is believed to have financed the Tuareg fighters that launched rebellions in the swathe of the Sahara Desert that stretches across the northern part of Niger and Mali. They repaid him in kind and during the recent civil war, Tuareg soldiers fought until the bitter end to protect Gadhafi's grip on power.

Gadhafi felt so welcome among the Tuareg people that every few years, he organized a caravan from his native city of Sirte through the hundreds of miles of desert spanning southern Libya, northern Niger, and parts of Burkina Faso. He drove in a convoy of well-armed SUVs and stopped to pitch his tent in the desert and meet with tribal leaders.

A representative of the Libyan rebel's National Transitional Council in Sirte, Hassan Droua, said he had reports from witnesses inside the city that a convoy of cars belonging to Gadhafi's son Moatassim had left Sirte, heading south toward the Niger border, after they were loaded with cash and gold from the city's Central Bank branch.

The government of Burkina Faso sought to quash speculation that convoys from Libya would proceed to that country, west of Niger, where Gadhafi was a frequent visitor during his days as Libya's Brother Leader.

Foreign Minister Djibril Bassolet had said last month that the West African nation would welcome Gadhafi. On Tuesday, Communications Minister Alain Edouard Traore went on state television to say: "We have heard nothing about (Gadhafi's) whereabouts ... But if he were to show up at our border he will be treated in keeping with international law."

Both Niger and Burkina Faso are signatories to the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for the Libyan leader, his son and the country's intelligence chief. But both nations also belong to the African Union, which in July called on member countries to disregard the warrant. The AU and many African leaders have become increasingly critical of the court, accusing it of targeting Africans.

"There is no longer a Guide in Libya," Traore said. "We have recognized the NTC."

Gadhafi, who ruled Libya for more than 40 years, has been on the run since losing control of his capital, Tripoli, last month. The rebels say at least two of his sons had been in the town of Bani Walid, one of the last remaining pro-Gadhafi strongholds, in recent days. Moussa Ibrahim, Gadhafi's spokesman and one of his key aides, was still believed to be in the town, rebel officials said.

Thousands of rebel fighters have surrounded the town as their leaders tried to negotiate a surrender.

Powerful antioxidant resveratrol prevents metabolic syndrome in lab tests, study finds

ScienceDaily (Sep. 2, 2011) ? Researchers in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta have discovered that resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant found in common foods, prevents a syndrome in some offspring that could lead to later health issues such as diabetes.

Resveratrol is found in fruits, nuts and red wine, and has been shown to extend the lifespan of many species.

Human offspring that have trouble growing in the womb have an increased risk of developing metabolic problems later in life. But U of A medical researchers Jason Dyck and Sandra Davidge and their teams found that administering resveratrol to the young offspring of lab rats after weaning actually prevented the development of a metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by glucose intolerance, insulin resistance and higher deposits of abdominal fat.

Dyck and Davidge published their findings in a recent edition of the peer-reviewed journal Diabetes. Dyck is a researcher in the departments of Pediatrics and Pharmacology, while Davidge is a researcher in the departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Physiology. Both are also members of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, as well as the Women and Children's Health Research Institute. Dyck and Davidge were co-senior authors of the study.

The study took advantage of the fact that "infancy is a potential window of opportunity to intervene and prevent the future development of metabolic diseases." The researchers noted this is the first potential pharmacological treatment that may help babies that developed in a growth-restricted environment in the womb.

"There is a concept that in utero, there are genetic shifts that are occurring -- reprogramming is occurring because of this strenuous environment babies are in, that allows them to recover very quickly after birth," says Dyck.

"When babies are growth-restricted, they usually have a catch-up period after they are born where they catch up to non-growth-restricted groups. It might be that reprogramming that creates this kind of 'thrifty' phenotype, where they want to consume and store and get caught up.

"That reprogramming appears to make them more vulnerable to developing a host of metabolic problems."

Earlier this year, Dyck and Davidge published another paper in Diabetes demonstrating that rat offspring not growing well in the womb had noticeable side effects from high-fat diets after birth -- the rats deposited more fat in the abdominal area, developed glucose intolerance, more dramatic cases of insulin resistance and insulin resistance at earlier stages of life.

Dyck and Davidge are continuing their research in this area, examining whether treating the mother during pregnancy can prevent metabolic problems in rat offspring affected by intrauterine growth restriction.

Davidge is an Alberta Innovates-Health Solutions (AIHS) Scientist and a Canada Research Chair in Women's Cardiovascular Health. Dyck is an AIHS Senior Scholar and the Director of the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the U of A.

Their research was funded by: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, and the Women and Children's Health Research Institute.

Armstrong 911 caller: My friend hanged himself

These calls are never easy to listen to, and this is no exception.

The Los Angeles Fire Department today released audio from the 911 call placed by a friend of "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills'" star Russell Armstrong, after finding his suicidal friend's limp body hanging in a guest house.

Though Russell's estranged wife Taylor Armstrong did not personally make the call, she is heard sobbing and exclaiming in the background of the nearly 7-minute exchange, for which her daughter was also present.

"My friend just hanged himself, do you understand?" the unidentified phoner, a friend of Russell's, told operators on the call. "Come over here right now, stop asking questions and come over here right now."

His exchange with the emergency personnel was peppered with asides he made to Taylor, standing and clearly heard sobbing nearby, in attempts to comfort her.

"Come here, Taylor. Come here, Taylor. It's all right. It's all right. There's nothing we can do."

The friend informed operators that they did not cut down Russell's body, whose death certificate also released this week revealed hung himself with an electrical cord, but told the operator that "there's nothing we can do. Please come as soon as possible."

"We just found...he has not been responding to anybody for the last few days and we just came up to the house and we finally went in...and that's it...Oh my God, oh my God. Oh my God, oh my God."

In the background of the call, Taylor is heard first exclaiming, "It's not all right," then, soon after, "I need my psychiatrist."

Taylor's 5-year-old daughter with Russell, Kennedy, was also present when they found the body, though per the exchange, did not ever see the body and was not aware of what had happened.

"Taylor, have her go away as soon as possible," the friend said. "She's fine, she's fine, she doesn't know...You know what Taylor, have your daughter go away please."

As for how they found their friend, the caller explained, "He's basically in the back. He locked his door, the friend went over through the back window and saw him hanging there. And we don't know how long it's been because the last time we all saw him was Friday."

In their report last week, the coroner confirmed that Russell had been dead for more than a day before he was found.

Foreclosures down, but may be just delayed | Seattle Real Estate ...

Foreclosure filings fell last month in the Seattle area and nationwide, but homeowners are still falling behind, according to a new report.

The number of filings was down by more than 32 percent in King County from both June and from July 2010, the foreclosure data firm RealtyTrac reported. Nationwide, filings fell 4 percent from June and 35 percent from a year ago.

July was the 10th straight month with fewer filings nationwide than a year earlier and had the lowest total since November 2007, RealtyTrac Chief Executive James Saccacio said in the report.

?It appears that the foreclosure processing delays, combined with the smorgasbord of national and state-level foreclosure prevention efforts ? including loan modifications, lender-borrower mediations and mortgage payment assistance for the unemployed ? may be allowing more distressed homeowners to stave off foreclosure,? he said.

?Unfortunately, the falloff in foreclosures is not based on a robust recovery in the housing market but on short-term interventions and delays that will extend the current housing market woes into 2012 and beyond,? he added. ?A stabilizing economy and improving job market are the long-term keys to a housing market recovery.?

One in every 611 U.S. homes, including one in every 682 in King County, received a foreclosure filing in July. Adding in Pierce and Snohomish counties, the Seattle area had one in every 574 homes getting a filing ? the 67th-highest rate among the 206 U.S. areas with more than 200,000 people.

Las Vegas continued to post the nation?s highest foreclosure rate, with one in every 99 homes getting a foreclosure filing in July.

Washington had one in every 781 homes getting a filing ? the 16th-highest rate among states and Washington, D.C. Nevada topped the list, with one in every 115 homes getting a filing.

RealtyTrac tracks documents at several stages of the foreclosure process, meaning not every home with a filing went through foreclosure auction. It tracks homes with multiple filings just once per period.
