WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two million-year-old bones belonging to a creature with both apelike and human traits provide the clearest evidence of evolution's first major step toward modern humans ? findings some are calling a potential game-changer.
An analysis of the bones found in South Africa suggests Australopithecus sediba is the most likely candidate to be the ancestor of humans, said lead researcher Lee R. Berger of the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.
The fossils, belonging to a male child and an adult female, show a novel combination of features, almost as though nature were experimenting. Some resemble pre-human creatures while others suggest the genus Homo, which includes Homo sapiens, modern people.
"It's as if evolution is caught in one vital moment, a stop-action snapshot of evolution in action," said Richard Potts, director of the human origins program at the Smithsonian Institution. He was not among the team, led by South African scientists, whose research was published online Thursday in the journal Science.
Scientists have long considered the Australopithecus family, which includes the famous fossil Lucy, to be a primitive candidate for a human ancestor. The new research establishes a creature that combines features of both groups.
The newly studied bones were found in 2008 in the fossil-rich cave region of Malapa near Johannesberg. Berger's then 9-year-old son, Matthew, found a bone that was determined to belong to the child. Two weeks later Berger uncovered the fossils of the female.
The journal published five papers detailing the findings, including separate reports on the foot, hand, pelvis and brain of A. sediba.
Berger said the brain, hand and foot have characteristics of both modern and early pre-human forms that show a transition under way. It represents a bona fide model that could lead to the human genus Homo, Berger said.
Kristian J. Carlson, also at Witwatersrand, said the brain of A. sediba is small, like that of a chimpanzee, but with a configuration more human, particularly with an expansion behind and above the eyes.
This seems to be evidence that the brain was reorganizing along more modern lines before it began its expansion to the current larger size, Carlson said in a teleconference.
"It will take a lot of scrutiny of the papers and of the fossils by more and more researchers over the coming months and years, but these analyses could well be 'game-changers' in understanding human evolution," according to the Smithsonian's Potts.
So, does all this mean A. sediba was the "missing link"?
Well, scientists don't like that term, which Berger calls "biologically unsound."
This is a good candidate to represent the evolution of humans, he said, but the earliest definitive example of Homo is 150,000 to 200,000 years younger.
Scientists prefer the terms "transition form" or "intermediary form," said Darryl J. DeRuiter of Texas A&M University.
"This is what evolutionary theory would predict, this mixture of Australopithecene and Homo," DeRuiter said. "It's strong confirmation of evolutionary theory."
But it's not yet an example of the genus Homo, he said, though it could have led to several early human forms, including Homo habilis, Homo rudolfensis or Homo erectus ? all considered early distant cousins to man, Homo sapiens.
These articles "force a rethinking of how traits are coupled together in human evolution," the Smithsonian's Potts said in an email from Kenya, where he is doing research.
"For example, in previous definitions of our genus, the leading edge in the emergence of Homo has been brain enlargement. The sediba bones show, however, that reorganization of the brain and pelvis typically connected with the evolution of Homo need not have involved brain enlargement," he noted.
"The more we learn about human evolution, the more we see that traits" that must have happened together could occur separately, Potts said.
For example, the study of the hand shows that major changes in the thumb usually associated with toolmaking "did not imply abandoning life in the trees. In the foot article, we're introduced to a unique and previously unknown combination of archaic and advanced traits in sediba," Potts explained.
The researchers reported that the fingers of A. sediba were curved, as might be seen in a creature that climbed in trees. But they were also slim and the thumb was long, more like a Homo thumb, so the hand was potentially capable of using tools, though no tools were found at the site.
The fossil provides the first chance for researchers to evaluate the function of a full hand this old, said Tracy Kivell of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany. Previously, hand bones older than Neanderthals have been isolated pieces rather that full sets.
The heel bone seems primitive, the researchers said. Yet its front is angled, suggesting an arched foot for walking on the ground, and there is a large attachment for an Achilles tendon as in modern humans, they said.
The pelvis is short and broad like a human pelvis, creating more of a bowl shape than in earlier Australopith fossils like the famous Lucy, explained Job Kibii of the University of the Witwatersrand.
That may force a re-evaluation of the process of evolution because many researchers had previously associated development of a human-like pelvis with enlargement of the brain, but in A. sediba the brain was still small.
The name Australopithecus means "southern ape," and "sediba" means natural spring, fountain or wellspring in the local Sotho language.
After the bones were discovered, the children of South Africa were invited to name the child, which they called "Karabo," meaning "answer" in the local Tswana language. The older skeleton has not yet been given a nickname, Berger said.
The juvenile would have been aged 10 to 13 in terms of human development; the female was in her 20s and there are indications that she may have given birth once. The researchers are not sure if the two were related.

MTV News breaks down the latest 'Twilight' trailer.
By Kara Warner
Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in "Breaking Dawn - Part 1"
Photo: Summit Entertainment
Be still, our "Twilight"-obsessed hearts. Finally, a new trailer arrived online Tuesday (September 13), and it is a doozy. Picking up where the first one (which debuted during the MTV Movie Awards in June) left off, the sparkling, action-packed, two-minute-and-30-second teaser offers fresh glimpses of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1."
The fact that we enjoyed every second of this new trailer is a given, therefore we are breaking out our top five favorite moments:
Charlie Walks Bella Down the Aisle
Bella's dad has never seemed totally onboard with his daughter dating Edward Cullen, let alone marrying him. However, in this sweet moment that opens the trailer, we see a wonderful bond between Bella and Charlie, as well as the natural chemistry between actors Kristen Stewart and Billy Burke, as they prepare to walk down the aisle together. "Don't let me fall, Dad," Bella says. "Never," he answers.
Jacob and Bella's Dance
After three books and four films of fighting for her heart, Jacob Black has to succumb to serious heartbreak and officially say goodbye to Bella. This sweet and heartfelt moment is captured beautifully during a slow dance at Bella's wedding reception. "This is how I'll remember you," Jacob says to Bella, hinting at the fact that she's set her heart on becoming a vampire. "Pink cheeks, heartbeat — you think I'd be used to telling you goodbye by now."
The Honeymoon Aftermath
It's safe to say that fans have been more excited about seeing the honeymoon scene than any other — save for a glimpse at Bella's wedding dress, perhaps. In the new trailer, we revisit Edward's hands crushing the headboard, followed by a very pleased and peaceful Bella lying in bed, surrounded by feathers from torn pillows and possibly pieces of the headboard. Intense, heated and squeal-worthy, for sure.
Wolves vs. Vamps
It wouldn't be a "Twilight" movie without some sort of epic battle involved, and in "Breaking Dawn - Part 1," there is a grand showdown between wolves and vampires. The wolf pack, which Jacob has deserted, wants to prevent Bella's unborn half-human, half-vampire from being born. "Get ready, they're coming for Bella," Jacob says, anxiously. "They're not going to touch her," answers Edward. We then see a shot of a standoff, wolves surrounding the vampires, at which point Jacob addresses them, "If you kill her, you kill me," followed by quick cuts of Alice and Jasper Cullen fighting the wolves.
Edward Reacts to Bella In Labor
Throughout the final minute of the trailer, most of the emphasis is put on the tension surrounding Bella's pregnancy. Carlisle warns Bella: "The fetus isn't compatible with your body. It's too strong and fast growing. Your heart will give out before you can do anything" — which Bella doesn't want to hear, much like Edward's emotional outbursts that she has decided to give up her life for her unborn child, without considering his feelings. The last shot of the trailer is Edward's face, full of anguish and anxiety, with Bella screaming in pain in the background.
What was your favorite scene in the trailer? Let us know in the comments!

Traditional financing provides much needed funding to advance major commercial or other tangible projects, and it is particularly beneficial to companies that plan months in advance. But what happens when funding is required immediately or clients have minimal experience? Asset-based financing can help clients avoid the complexities involved with traditional financing methods.
The Challenge
Because of many lenders? strict guidelines, the types of large commercial projects they will finance are limited. These agreements involve formal appraisals, third-party reports and approval from loan committees. In many cases, clients also need previous experience or equity partners to qualify. The approval process is long, complicated and uncertain. Commercial financing may also involve last-minute surprises should the bank or financial institution change terms or pull funding altogether. Even with adequate assets, the project may not garner approval. Worse yet, a bank can call its notes due at any moment, because its lending guidelines may have changed or their investors or regulators may not be satisfied with the lending institution?s choice of investments. This leads some clients to private investors (hard money), introducing even more challenges, including higher rates, lower LTVs (loan-to-values), shorter terms, higher fees, and more exposure to failure of the project because of external or internal factors.
The Solution
In situations that involve a commercial or other tangible project, asset-based financing provides a much faster and more direct path to approval. Asset-based funding leverages the client?s existing assets, in most cases eliminating appraisals, third-party reports and loan committees. Furthermore, this option provides elevated client privacy. Asset-based financing does not require business experience or equity partnership, with approval in as little as 3 to 5 days and expedited funding in 30 to 60 days.
For example, an affluent client of Three Dimensions Banc Corporation was trying to get financing for various projects (commercial real estate and other tangibles) in the US and overseas, but was frustrated by aspects of the process of funding, such as underwriting and other third party reports. The client was turned down for financing at the closing table even though he had a firm commitment from the lenders and had spent a lot time and money.
When Three Dimensions told him about the unique approach of asset-based financing, the client was curious but not convinced that it was a viable solution. Three Dimensions was able to show him that the only way he would not get funding would be if the financial instrument he provided was not valid or he was on the watch list. With this solution, he was able to get his projects funded very quickly while working on multiple projects. He also was able to get extended terms based on his needs, rather than conforming to the lender?s guidelines.
To launch the process, clients simply request a letter of credit (LOC), issued by an investment-rated bank. LOCs are bank-issued financial instruments guaranteeing payments for a specified duration, given that the instrument?s conditions are met. The LOC, also known as Standby Letter of Credit (SBLC) or Irrevocable Letter of Credit (ILOC), must be unconditional. Clients must also have adequate support assets. Investment-rated banks issue these directly to the client, with rating requirements based on the type and amount of financing.
Many developers use asset-based financing to avoid the hassles involved in proving the viability of their project to a traditional finance company. Because asset-based financing is leveraged against existing collateral, it is all the support needed to close a deal.
Flexibility is yet another perk. With terms based on the amount and type of financing, clients might benefit from monthly compounded interest and payments to simple interest terms with deferred payments and no pre-payment penalties. Flexibility increases for LOCs greater than $100 million. Furthermore, financial instruments are adaptable to meet the client?s needs. Many LOCs have an evergreen clause, which means they can be renewable, larger projects drawn out over time if needed.
The greatest benefit of asset-based financing to the client is an increased LTV ratio, which can be significantly higher than that for traditional commercial financing, escalating to as much as 100 percent of the clients? LOC face value. These higher LTVs reduce a borrower?s upfront cash requirements significantly. When combined with expedited approval, developers have a fool-proof path to success.
The Ideal Client
Asset-based financing is ideally suited to large business entities, developers, and private equity funds, principally those in the real estate industry or those primarily focused on tangible assets. Hedge funds are also strong candidates, minimizing project risk by using advanced investment strategies. Asset-based financing can also provide a convenient funding environment for offshore development projects. With the added privacy provided by asset-based lending, developers can now finance a diverse array of projects globally that may not have been attainable before.
With this new and exciting finance approach, you can now fund any project: globally, with privacy, without the hassles of traditional finance methods, and in an efficient manner.

It is no secret that public speaking produces a lot of fear and strain, in fact public speaking ranks high within causing fear in many individuals.
The problem that most of us deal with is not speech making by itself, it is actually any kind of frontal lecture or exchange of information that people need to deliver. College students are well aware of the devastating connection between the fear of public speaking, the requirement to present seminars or to shield a work from criticism tends to make public speaking victims out of most of us.
There are a lot of tips and advice on offering a well planned and correctly executed speech. Lets attempt to consider the few basic items of good public speaking, the items that matter the most and will increase your chances of getting to the finish of your speech alive as well as well.
A great speech starts with a great topic. It is so crucial that you select a topic that interests you, so you believe will interest the audience. Try and find as numerous things that interest you in this talk, discover things the you already know a little more about and that you can use for you to leverage the speech to your benefit. Whenever researching the topic of the speech search for as many divers subjects inside topic, try and locate one that you just feel very comfortable with and that you may base most of the time in your talk to.
I am too much dependent on internet. I look for every information over it.I was surprised when I read about tote bags . I also liked yo gabba gabba toys and diaper bags. I can never imagine my life without these.
Think carefully of your market and its needs, if this is the actual silent audience, coming to notice a public speaking and that will be grateful for any piece of info you through their way, or the savvy interested audience that may make your life hard and enquire of questions, if you prepare for the actual worst ? you will be protected. The problem is that you don t always have enough time to spend in preparing for the target audience from hell.
Writing the introduction, the base of the speech and the opening of your public speaking must be a powerful one, if you want to capture your audience attention as well as minds you will need some passion here. Start by writing any 3-sentence introduction. Think of it as trying to describe this subject to someone in a very pleasant casual talk, key to giving a speech is a covert tone. In the introduction educate audience what you re about to declare.
The first thirty seconds of your talk are probably the most important. In that period of time you must grab the attention with the audience, and engage their own interest in what you have to declare in your speech. Once your market is interested and intrigued you can move forward and advance on the later parts of your talk.
Now is the time to address each of the standard points in your introduction, as well as apply the meat of the talk. You need to explore a few items in a profound way, to show that you have done your homework and provides the audience that feeling that you just re just talking to these people and not reading out any prepared speech. When an experienced speaker gives a public talk the feeling is as if they was talking about something he?s very familiar with, that rerouting the subject is not a problem, that he?s in control over the whole scope of the topic. That is what you should aspire to ? not necessarily to know this, but to give this feeling.
Most good writing, we are told over and over again, will need to have structure. A good speech isn?t exception. By providing your talk with a beginning, middle, plus an end, you will have laid the actual foundations for a successful talk that fulfils all of your aspirations.
The finishing touch, the conclusion is your final touch, and it will probably not make or break you general performance, tend not to rush to the conclusion, come up with a lengthy speech before you get concise when you say in conclusion , give the market the feeling that you have exhausted every one of the possible interesting things you might have said, and move to the final outcome. Make sure you finish with a tremendous amount of confidence, it will give you audience home with a feeling that they have learned something, and attempt to make sure you know what you are speaking about.
